East London - An 85-year-old granny has been shot dead while her young granddaughter, who was also shot, hid from intruders.

In a statement, Centane police said they were investigating a case of murder and attempted murder.

"The two were fast asleep at their home, which is at Debese Location, Ngcizela Village, Centane," said Captain Jackson Manatha.

"According to the 11-year-old granddaughter, they heard a knock on Friday... at about 01:00. Before they could respond to the knock, the door was pushed wide open. The 11-year-old started to cry and she was shot on her upper body. She hid herself in the house as it was dark.

"The suspects... fired some shots in the direction of the 85-year-old woman. She was hit on her upper body and died instantly."

Manatha said it was not clear how many suspects there were.

It was also not clear what the motive was as nothing was taken from the house, he said.

Manatha went on to say that the girl was recovering at hospital.

Butterworth cluster commander Brigadier Stanley Sibhidla condemned the attack on an elderly woman and child.

He said police would work around the clock to trace the perpetrators.

The deceased would be named once the majority of her relatives had been officially informed of her murder, said Sibhidla.
