Eastgate bomb positioned to cause major damage

2011-11-28 17:51

Johannesburg - The explosive device found at Eastgate Mall in Bedfordview near Johannesburg on Monday could have caused major damage, Eyewitness News reports.

The device had been left in a suitcase in front of a jewellery store," said police spokesperson Captain Katlego Mogale.

The police's bomb disposal unit disarmed the device in a controlled explosion after evacuating the mall.

Business has since returned to normal.

EWN reports that police sources believe it was a premeditated crime.

The suitcase reportedly was found beneath the escalator at the food court of the mall.

EWN said the device was planted near the only two restaurants that operate on gas.

Eastgate Centre management confirmed the incident and said: “The safety of our shoppers and tenants is our top priority and centre management acted to ensure that that their safety was not compromised.”

Were you there? Send us your eyewitness accounts.

WoW, This could have been bad.Thank god nobody got injured.!

      BA - 2011-11-28 18:20

Yes this is terrible. Hope the police take it serious and implement measures to prevent this type of terrorism in future.

      Penny-wise - 2011-11-28 18:22

Jack you're a chop! Bloody ANCYL militants trying to send a message about nationalization of all gold and jewels!!

      Mike - 2011-11-28 18:27

Jack...Muslims where does the report say that?

      kwagga - 2011-11-28 18:41

Jack, grow up. Because one idiot pastor in the US wanted to burn the Quran, does that include every Christian too? Get to know geniune Muslims. They might teach you not to judge.

      Morne - 2011-11-28 18:42

This is very serious. Someone is up to something very bad. It's not like a school prank. Some very dangerous idiot build the thing. Hope our SAP find the person responsible for this. Apartheid is long time gone.

      Azande - 2011-11-28 19:14

jack, you are nuts, grow up. penny, yo dipper is wet, tell yo mom to change it.

      Spyker - 2011-11-28 19:35

Indeed Morne, Apartheid is "...long time gone...(sic)" - the inconvenient verity though, is that, that, that replaced it, is by every measure much, much worse. Get it..? The South African government is bankrupted.., period. Moody's noted that SA is on exactly the same path as Greece/Italy, the only difference though - we do not have an "European Union" to bail us out. SA will plod along for another 5-, perhaps 10 years, then we will collapse into an economic abyss that will make Zim look like Monte Carlo. The reason the ANC government is bankrupted is because they simply do not have the cognitive capacity to run a country. The 'Protection of Information Bill's' primary requirement is to keep this verity from the public and in an attempt for the 'Imperial Crown Trading dynasty' to seize the country's minerals. They perceive the country's minerals as a secure source of income (irrespective of their cognitive capacity constraints). So get prepared Morne, SA WILL collapse into a state of anarchy that will make the Apartheid era look like a Sunday-school picnic...

      Sheda - 2011-11-28 19:50

Hahaha ..... I can laugh now because no one was injured or killed.... I am really enjoying the fact that the ANC used to do these things because of a bad regime and now....and now someone is doing it against this regime.......the ANC always supports the baddies (alla Syria, Bob etc...) are they now going to forgive these guys?????

      Len - 2011-11-29 09:19

What is even funnier is that this was not an explosive device.

  • Shoe - 2011-11-28 18:00

Someone a long time ago said they were prepared "to kill" and "lay their lives" for Pres. Zuma. Not only was the statement shocking, but also conveying the message that the speaker had potential for violence when upset. The utterer of those very same words is very upset at the moment, and out of the blue, bombs appear. How freaken random is that?

      sam.guud - 2011-11-28 18:16

You are so disappointingly stupid, and it's not funny at all.

      Mike - 2011-11-28 18:29

Shoe, seriously or are you being facetious? You might as well blame Elvis

      Shoe - 2011-11-28 18:30

Thus spake the smart one who voted with his huge butt, to kill and maim for Malema. Rich coming from you.

      Shoe - 2011-11-28 18:36

@ Daniel, its too early to tell. But Julius and his millitant stance can not be ruled out. Why the Jewelery shop? Who buys jewelery? Is there no link at all between jewelery and mining??? or Jewelery and white monopoly?

      Spyker - 2011-11-28 18:37

Why is it "...not funny.." sam.guud..? If you say you are prepared " kill...", then what nearly happened at the Eastgate Mall, is EXACTLY what you mean. Or what do you think such utterances mean..? What planet are you from..? The same planet as the aliens that are currently working with the government (or in it)..? A planet where there is not a lot of oxygen - specifically the O2 required for elementary cerebral cognitive functioning - viz planet "Dumb, Dumber & Dumbest".., you feckless fetid feral atavistic troglodyte..?

      Mike - 2011-11-28 18:43

I would need at least some concrete evidence before forming a prima facie view.

      Shoe - 2011-11-28 18:50

@ Daniel, its called a 'Hunch'; or 'Hypothesis' or "Theory' for that reason. And its a free country, anybody can have a hunch. If the evidence does not support the hunch, so be it.

      Mike - 2011-11-28 18:57

I think more of a brain fart..... all the rest need some evidence and there is nothing yet

      Shoe - 2011-11-28 19:07

Its a free country Daniel. You can fart all you want. Be it with your brain or your gat, itsokay!

      Azande - 2011-11-28 19:18

U guys are nuts to think that ANCYL planned the bombing.

      Juicecard - 2011-11-28 19:23

      Penny-wise - 2011-11-28 18:21

      Impi - 2011-11-28 19:14

@ Penny Wise and Co. Wow you two are so sharp! Now go reward yourselves with an ice cream!

      Michael - 2011-11-29 06:45

@impi, i rather enjoyed the play on words myself, no reason to get so defensive. Nice to see a bit of humor on this otherwise dour forum.

  • Johan Grobbelaar - 2011-11-28 18:28

Premeditated crime? No sh...t sherlock! Lol. As opposed to? O look, I dropped a bomb that just happened to be in my pants pocket?

      Dmitri - 2011-11-28 18:47

A good thing these people did not follow the IRA example. Plant two explosives. Notify the authorities of the first one. The second one is usually planted where people evacuate to. Once they are there, it is detonated. Terrible. Has anyone claimed responsibility as yet as I have not seen anything on that subject.

      Johan Grobbelaar - 2011-11-28 20:28

True Dmitri. But if ever there was a dumb comment, its saying like ur some kind of genius that building, carrying in and planting a bomb is premeditated. Surely that guy qualifies for Mampara of the week reward...

      Esperanca - 2011-11-28 22:43

Johan this whole bomb thing has the reporter confused, I'm confused too, where was the bomb "in front of the jewelry store" or "under the escalators" - thank goodness they figured it was premedited!

  • jlouw1 - 2011-11-28 18:43

Don't be shy, go to Eastgate Mall where you can be blown away, with things to do!

      Go - 2011-11-28 19:20

you obviously have no idea of the severe nature of this article , idiot !!!!!!

      fredahsm - 2011-11-28 22:22

@jlouw1, U just like the other idiots, who thinks this is a joke........

  • Rupert - 2011-11-28 18:44

Can not start blaming anybody, but it spells nothing good bombs are the weapon of cowards with no respect for the lives of matter if they are far left or right or some religious nuts ....get them lock them up and dont feed them

      Bob - 2011-11-28 18:50

      Right...! Starting with the ANC!

  • Eric - 2011-11-28 18:52

    I Was There ....

      Shoe - 2011-11-28 18:59

you guys are serious idiots !!!

  • Gaolatlhe Moabi James Kanakang - 2011-11-28 19:11

is it a terrorist, or just bussines sabotage?

      Impi - 2011-11-28 19:22

@Gaolatlhe. We will probably never know, but it sounds suspicious given the political climate at the moment. Someone that would want to harm a business would never go to extreme measures like this. This sounds radical and dangerous.

      Dave - 2011-11-28 19:41

@Impi, we have to know, and we have to know fast. This must be stopped in its tracks immediately. For whatever reason this was done, it must be exposed and dealt with

      Impi - 2011-11-28 19:58

@Dave. I agree. There must be CCTV cameras to review. It is the timing of this that worries me. Why now? We haven't had this kind of incident for many Years.

      Dave - 2011-11-28 20:58

@Impi, there never is a good time, but for maximum exposure, choose Xmas time when the malls will be packed. We have had several events recently that could have sparked this, and also just an accumulation of pent up hatred. We all have our suspicions, I have mine, but right now we should all be thankful this didnt happen

  • Dave - 2011-11-28 19:17

There are a few poster here making this really a laughing matter? I was a child playing on the Durban beacfront the night the Magoo's bomb went off. The sound of the bomb blast was enough to freeze you, but worse was the sounds of screams of pain of those injured, those sounds will remain with me for the rest of my life. So lets just be thankful that many families who were there will see Christmas this year.

  • Barry - 2011-11-28 19:26

I do not think this is coming from outside the country. Which internal movement has anything to gain to go really low and terrorize ? Internal South African terrorism ?

      Chumscrubber1 - 2011-11-28 19:52

Scary thing is they THINK they're gaining something. Delusional extremists who actually believe that their actions are justified.

      Chum Scrubber - 2011-11-28 20:24

Now who am I, Guppy or Chum Scrubber? Eish, my technical skills are lacking when it comes to modern technology!

      Chum Scrubber - 2011-11-28 20:29

Found myself again - shoo, I'm relieved ...

  • boramk - 2011-11-28 19:29

I just wish to know who was behind this, without postulating that it was a musllim or an ANC member

  • H - 2011-11-28 19:54

I find it hard to accept that anyone would hope for any political gain from such a monumentally cowardly approach. It seems to me more like an escalation in the ongoing guerilla-style criminal onslaught on malls, banks and cash-in-transit operations. May the guilty swiftly meet justice.

  • tiblos - 2011-11-28 20:04

It is s disturbing to hear of such deviuos attempts on the lives of ordinary SOUTH AFRICANS. The perpetrators must be found and brought to book for their wild attempts. We might have differences as a nation ,however we have learnt that to resolve our issues is through dialogue period. What is most disturbing is that we have people starting to point fingers at certain sections of our communities wich is very dangerous and actually plays into the hands of the cowards who planted the device that by the way was going to kill and maim black, white, indian, chines, muslim, christian, atheist, hindu etc. Therefore we dont need negative ppl to be making comments and statements, that are devisive,we should be putting all our political differences aside and help the law enforcement agencies to apprehend these bastards who come up with these foreign tendencies.

      tiblos - 2011-11-28 21:18

@ Henno the point is innocent lives could have been lost whilst we are arguing about our political affiliations and opnions.

      Len - 2011-11-29 09:24

Lives could have only been lost of misinformation, not because the device was explosive. Once again, our media and the police rush to conclusions before they establish the facts, and many people follow them without thinking. 702 went beserk yesterday afternoon, even confirming that it was a device intended to cause greatest harm. With this kind of reporting, who needs the secrecy bill?

  • Bianca - 2011-11-28 20:10

We were in the movies when eastgate was evacuated. The staff and security of east gate were extremely efficient and effective. Extremely grateful

  • theodor.jahnke - 2011-11-28 21:05

"premeditated crime"......... What a mental leap! How can this scenario be anything but ...

  • munyaradzi.ncube - 2011-11-28 21:16

I really winder if Eastgate mall belongs to some ANC big shot? or if all the people who were at the mall to day are all ANC supporters? Because people are blaming the ANC for this act. Guys, this is an act of terror and could have been perpetrated by some disgruntled former employee or some naughty guy. I have not ready anywhere here where it says the perpetrator was either black or white, and it could have been anyone from either race. Lets allow the police to do their job and not fan further racial discontent among ourselves. we are one people.

  • TheWatcher - 2011-11-28 21:22

lets just hope the cops find whoever did this. I don't care what he/she/it/their reasons are for this action but intentionally putting innocent civilians at risk invalidates whatever cause or idea you uphold.

  • fredahsm - 2011-11-28 22:40

Fun to see how most of the comments are so idiotic and naive. Grow up.........what if the explosive went off??? Its always abt race or politics...... News for you suckers: Blacks, whites, Asians, Coloureds, ANC supporters, DA supporters, Cope supporters, FF supporters, etc, were all part of either shoppers or empoloyees at Eastgate during tht time.......GROW UP NOT EVERYTHING IS A JOKE.

  • Gilad - 2011-11-28 23:21

If there is no CCTV footage of the person who placed the bag there it will be a shame. there is no way that a person should be able to leave a deadly device in a public mall without being seen. It could have killed people. Really bad. Hope the coward is caught.

  • Silvana - 2011-11-29 05:41

"EWN reports that police sources believe it was a premeditated crime." Noooo really? I thought the bomber misplaced his briefcase. Wish people would think before making stupid statements. Well done though to the vigilant person who spotted the briefcase.

  • Silvana - 2011-11-29 05:56

"The device had been left in a suitcase in front of a jewellery store," "The suitcase reportedly was found beneath the escalator at the food court of the mall." Of the 2 quotes above, I think the 2nd one is more factual. Placing a briefcase under an escalator makes it less conspicuous.Saying that the jewellery store was targetted, in my opinion, is pure conspiracy theory.
