Johannesburg - Eight people have been arrested following the hijacking of a cigarette truck in Isando, east of Johannesburg, on Tuesday morning.

The group is alleged to have hijacked the truck and then transferred the goods into a Toyota Quantum. They abandoned the truck and fled in the Quantum, said police spokesperson, Lieutenant Colonel Katlego Mogale.

The Ekurhuleni metro police department were alerted of the incident and followed up. Their investigation led them to a house Kempton Park.

"Eight suspects, a woman and seven men, aged between 30 and 40, [were found at the house]," Mogale said.

"Cigarettes with an estimated value of R280 000 and two unlicensed firearms were recovered."

The group was charged with hijacking, possession of suspected stolen property and the possession of an unlicensed firearm and ammunition.

"We are not ruling out the possibility of linking some of the suspects to similar crimes committed in the province," said Mogale.

The group will appear in court soon.
