EIGHT-YEAR-OLD Sarah Macaskill stole this year’s KZN Youth Cattle Show at the Royal Showgrounds, and walked away with seven awards in her very first show.

The grade three Howick Prep pupil, who lives on a farm in Curry’s Post, decided to compete in this year’s show after watching her father win countless trophies for the showing of his cattle across the country in previous years.

Sarah’s mother Juliet Macaskill said her daughter had grown up with animals and saw how passionate her father was with “showing” cattle and decided that she wanted to compete this year in the KZN Youth Cattle Show.

“She saw her dad’s trophies and said she wanted to show her calf, R.R. Rockstar. We went into the show not knowing what to expect and not knowing how intense it would be as this was a junior show.”

She said Sarah trained hard and showed her four-month-old Ayrshire calf and impressed the judges.

“Sarah was awarded Overall Stockman Winner for the Junior Junior category [nine years and under].

“There were three events she competed in for this title where the judges watched her every move.”

Sarah won second prize for the washing and preparation of her calf, first prize for knowledge on cattle and second prize for showmanship in the ring.

“She was awarded first prize for best Ayrshire on show; second prize for best dairy animal on show and fourth prize for best cattle on show overall.

“Here she was showing in the ring alongside other bigger Holstein cows, huge Beef and cross-breed cattle led by much older teenagers and Weston Agricultural College students, and her little calf came fourth out of all of them,” said the proud mother.

Sarah said she had formed a special bond with her calf and described her as “sweet and gentle”. “Rockstar is very special, and sweet and gentle and she is tame. I loved the show and I want to take part again next year,” she said.
