Johannesburg - Six armed robbers brutally attacked an elderly couple in their home in Vereeniging on Monday.

The body of the 87-year-old man was found in the bathroom in which he had locked himself to get away from the robbers, reported Beeld

But the robbers kicked down the door and his body was later found on the floor.

His 84-year-old wife had open slash wounds to her arms as she tried to defend herself against the attackers. She survived and was taken to hospital.

“It is not yet clear what was the cause of [the elderly man’s] death,” said Piet Nienaber, chairperson of eBlockwatch in Vereeniging.

“The post-mortem will determine if he died due to a heart attack or whether he suffocated. He was also assaulted.”

The gardener and the couple were busy eating lunch when they were attacked.

“The old lady definitely tried to block the attack. Her arms were slashed open where a sharp object hit her. They fought against the robbers,” said Nienaber.

The gardener was also injured in the attack and taken to hospital.
