Elderly couple attacked in Wilderness home

2013-03-12 12:33

George - An elderly couple has been attacked in their home in Wilderness, Western Cape police said on Tuesday.

The attack on Monday followed a similar incident on Sunday, said Captain Bernadine Steyn.

In the latest incident, four men forced open the back door of the home of an 82-year-old man and his wife just before midnight.

"The elderly man and his wife both sustained open wounds during the incident and several items were taken, including cellphones cash and a purse," said Steyn.

They were taken to a hospital in George where they were in stable conditions, she said.

On Sunday, an 81-year-old man and his 73-year-old wife were attacked in the bedroom of their home in George at 22:30, said Steyn.

"The male victim sustained wounds to his hands, arms, neck and face, while his wife sustained wounds to her face and stomach," she said.

      Nonpopular Newsreel - 2013-03-12 15:01

Not to be racist (as non-racist is only a code word for anti-white) and with respect to the black culture who in itself has suffered so much at the hands of tribalism; but were the attackers of tribal origin?

      Yanga Maroloma - 2013-03-12 15:11

Whatever tribe, ppl are hurt thats the main point here and someone must pay!

      riad.mahomed - 2013-03-12 15:25

I'm fed up with crime in SA. I now abandoned the community policing forum. I removed the alarm system, the electric fence, the barbed wire fencing. I put 2 Al-Qaida flags on my roof, and on my gate I wrote “BEWARE THE MUJAHIDEEN”. Now I have the CIA/FBI/NIA & SAP watching my house 24.

      rodney.bevan.58 - 2013-03-12 16:40

Lol. Riad, not a bad idea. :D

      johan.mostert.967 - 2013-03-12 16:44

Lol riad.mahomed, the Navy Seals might come and pop a cap in your skull.

      Lance Elliott - 2013-03-12 20:18

Let's vote Riad for president ? His lateral thinking has earned him millions of Rands worth of surveilance for his house- all for FREE ? Think what he can do for our electicity problemd and fuel hikes ? The first criminal that stalks his house with a blk balaclava and gun in hand will get zapped by a CIA sattelite !

  • rynier - 2013-03-12 12:46

    This is sick!

  • moi.carla.1980 - 2013-03-12 12:50

Disgusting!!!! What threat can an 82 year old possibly pose that you have to beat him? Absolutely shameful. Now this shows absolutely no respect for our elders.

  • hgambold - 2013-03-12 12:54

  • nhlapop - 2013-03-12 12:54

I blame our law enforcement. Criminals do whatever they want in our country because of our criminal system is too soft for them.

      heini.botes - 2013-03-12 13:06

How must criminals fear and respect the law if the whole government is full of criminals??

      Lance Elliott - 2013-03-12 13:41

I'm totally against police brutality, but I do sympathize with in a few cases. Imagine trying to arrest criminals like this for weeks or months, you catch them and a day later they are out on R500 bail. It must frustrate honest cops and I think that's where the police brutality starts- knowing that the justice system is full of loopholes because it was created by a deceitful, fraudulent govt that only thinks about enriching themselves and only wants a judicial system in place that is designed to ensure they will get off scott-free if caught stealing out of state coffers..

      Nonpopular Newsreel - 2013-03-12 15:08

I blame the government and it's unwillingness to stave off the criminal element. Why should they though? They are the criminal element. Once criminality has destabilized the country; their communist backsides can indeed nationalize everything in the name of international banking cartels. Criminality is the new law and it benefits your "leaders" and the corporations sponsoring them.

  • natch.marklar - 2013-03-12 12:55

Pig dog bastards. Bring in Sharia law -- chop off their hands and feet.

      riaan.herselman.7 - 2013-03-12 13:11

Great law , can we use it for rape - that would be fun .

      Nonpopular Newsreel - 2013-03-12 15:22

My last comment was in jest; the rule of law is pliant to the morals of a society; yet, morals are pliant as well. Help us though to never accept the death of a person by violent means and for no motive but personal gain. Let those who transgress be punished with finality.

      johan.mostert.967 - 2013-03-12 16:45

"Great; so we can stone women because the husband thinks that she was looking at another man?" Why not, some guys are already shooting their girlfriends...

  • Winifred Watson - 2013-03-12 13:03

Old People.....easy targets for cowards. I suppose this made them feel like proud men, attacking defenceless old people. Really.

      disillusioned.sa - 2013-03-12 13:34

yep. Same guys that feel like real men when they rape kids. You know when the first elections were held (thing waaay back) Everyone prayed. The Dutch Reforms, the English protestants, the Roomse Gevaars, the Slams, the Hindus, the Ancestor worshipers: basically everyone. And it went well. Now, we have praise singers, spin doctors and nothing goes well. Think we need prayer back in schools yet? I do.

  • tumelo.motloung.779 - 2013-03-12 13:11

it's now becoming more unsafe for all elderly people to be on their own anywhere in the country.they're easy targets to all criminals.they're being robbed, raped and killed.

  • Wisethee Madimetja - 2013-03-12 13:12

Lets all of us go for vigilante group nation wide it is clear our government is not really ready to fix this.

  • Rhubarb Sonnevlae - 2013-03-12 13:20

Chaps. I know Wilderness well. The chances that they are "locals" to Wilderness are minute but not entirely impossible. Similar murders at Stillbay and Mosselbay have proven that outsiders target "loopholes “they find in local law enforcement. The result is that the whole district becomes mortified by such experiences. I'd suggest a Community Policing Forum be activated to broaden policing in the district. I'm glad this couple survived, but one needs to understand that criminals need to feel unsafe to ensure their swift departure from a “prevention is better than cure perspective.”

  • Lynn Hattingh - 2013-03-12 13:24

It's not about robbery any more that is just a sideline! It's about hate, revenge, murder, punishment and brutality! These are hate crimes plain and simple!

      Khethu Ndlovu - 2013-03-12 14:00

      Revenge n punishment for what?

      Piet Pompies - 2013-03-12 14:01

Most probably instigated by "certain factions" of this country? They have some very brave warriors who can only take on old people.

      Lynn Hattingh - 2013-03-12 19:09

You'r right Piet it makes them feel good!

  • Mamushcka_ - 2013-03-12 13:31

yet another way our elderly are treated in this country!! no respect for anything or anyone anymore..... those who helped grow our country - its disgusting!

  • Wilderness Newspaper - 2013-03-12 13:52

This is a false report, as no such incident happened on Monday night. There was an incident over the weekend, but no other incidents were reported to the SAPS.

      Lance Elliott - 2013-03-12 16:59

You also moonlight as a Wilderness tour operator....just asking.
