Elderly couple attacked with screwdrivers

2011-11-25 13:58

Cape Town - An elderly couple was attacked on their farm by men armed with knives and screwdrivers in Vredendal early on Friday morning, Western Cape police said.

Warrant Officer November Filander said the man, 86, and his wife 84, were woken up in their bedroom by the three men at around 03:00.

The men assaulted the man with a screwdriver and tied his wife's legs.

"They then ransacked the closet and took an amount of cash. Thereafter the suspects took a firearm out of a safe and fled the scene in an unknown direction."

Filander said the men forced their way into the house through the back door.

The couple received medical attention on the scene.

The swine responsible should be strung up. End of bloody story.

      Dirk - 2011-11-25 14:08

We are seeing these incidents in areas where it was, until recently, almost unheard of- KZN coast, Mosselbay,Hermanus and now the W Coast

      Steven - 2011-11-25 14:27

***K these barbaric cowards. This country has become so criminally inclined that had the story went "Old couple, tied up but not harmed", we would all sigh a relief and award them an accolade.

      Marion - 2011-11-25 15:19

@Braam - you have just admitted on an open forum that you committed atrocities during Apartheid and, assuming you are South African, there is no Truth and Reconciliation commission to protect you anymore. And while you may be proud of doing that it makes you no better than these very people you are referring to in this article. Your comment nauseates me.

      Ria - 2011-11-25 16:56

@Marion you had no problem with what they were doing way back in the 70's and 80's. Back then you called it protection, now you call it atrocities. He was doing as he was told and killing under orders is a ground for justification if it was under a military order. What the funny thing is marion your comment makes me more nausious than his could ever, you and people that are like you are the reason the country is like it is, you illustrate sympathy and empathy for people who would not do the same for you. So stop attacking veterans irrespactive of race, they where done a great disservice by the previous as well as this goverment, soldiers are not asked to do something, they are told to do something and i for one share his view and would have loved to see criminals riding around in town on the front of Caspers rather than staying in cells that exceeds the quality of a five star hotel room.

      Irene - 2011-11-25 17:46

@Jack ~ You're still wet behind the ears but obviously very bright. Well done on finally understanding it all.

      Dirk - 2011-11-25 20:20

Marion- I regret that I did not go before TRC to apologise for my opposition to the old government. I was a critic then and now. There was a war on on the border, on the one side, SA and on the other different groupings, but all trained by the Soviet communists in the worst atrocities imaginable. What Braam described, is nothing when compared with the other side

      andrew.hartung - 2011-11-25 21:46

Who are these ass#%%# that are disliking your comments? The perps??

      Wouter - 2011-11-26 14:33

  • Hedda-Louise - 2011-11-25 14:07

This is barbaric!!!! No respect for the elderly and the frail. What's going on in the Western Cape?

      Lionel - 2011-11-25 14:28

Not only Western Cape but the whole of SA!!!!!!!!!

  • StarStruck - 2011-11-25 14:07

Yet another firearm stolen? It will surface again after a few murders have been committed.

      Marion - 2011-11-25 15:20

No doubt a legal firearm in the wrong hands yet again...

  • Lionel - 2011-11-25 14:08

      Sean - 2011-11-26 13:22

How can one do something like that , FFS !

  • Pieter - 2011-11-25 14:09

I been burgled 3 times already in the past four months while at work...If I catch these M F's in my house. Lets just say they will be at the bottom of the lake down the road from me with 100kg weights tied around each ankle...So come comrades I'm waiting for you.

      StarStruck - 2011-11-25 14:33

Trust me you are not the only one feeling like this about violent crime.

      Silvana - 2011-11-25 15:29

@Pieter. I had the same problem. I live alone on a small holding and my son was only 12 at the time. I got rid of all my staff. Guess what! Never had a problem since. I know this is not possible when you are a farmer, but what I am saying, is that it's always the staff that are implicated somehow.

      Randomhero6661 - 2011-11-25 15:53

@ Pieter thats where killers make their mistake why sh1t in your back garden when you know its gonna come back and bite you... Drive a little further maybe so 20 kms...

      Gail - 2011-11-25 18:17

I am not afraid of the people who do this. Yes it seems barbaric esp. the way they always attack the weak and the elderly. Getting rid of your servants is hardly constructive since that makes them unemployed and their families are just at much as risk. I'm surprised that you've had no revenge attacks but know that not all people are bad or barbaric. I know that the African people who work for me would protect me with their lives and even scold me for not being sufficiently safety conscious but I have told them that in the event of my being attacked or their families threatened to save themselves. I share my home with an ex MK cadre who is more respectful towards me than my own sons are at all times. I hate violence of any kind don't even kill spiders but we all have to die somehow someway. Giving in to fear and hatred makes me no better than the people who commit the crime and I am conceding defeat if I allow them to make me a prisoner in my own home.

  • Francesca - 2011-11-25 14:17

it's strange how so many so no not the should be NO NOT ANYBODY... these are animals that are attacking people on farms, cutting off the hands that feed them, you always seem to hear afterwards how it was ex farm workers or ex delivery staff, who I am sure these poor souls have helped or given a meal to at some point...bring back the death it now

      francoisvdmerwe - 2011-11-25 14:27

btw usually it is not workers from the farm

      Wouter - 2011-11-25 14:36

I dont like ur AB whatever but I like ur statement

  • Martin - 2011-11-25 14:28

      Randomhero6661 - 2011-11-25 15:55

  • Fredster69 - 2011-11-25 14:32

      Serena - 2011-11-26 11:25

Must agree, those M-- Frs have balls of steel to attack people in their 80's!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • carmen.macrae - 2011-11-25 14:34

The trouble is it is sometimes the domestics who know that there is a safe on the premises and relay this information to the perpetrators. Thank goodness the couple received medical attention and are still alive, I hope they quickly recover from this shocking ordeal and can enjoy a peaceful night's sleep!

  • SNG62 - 2011-11-25 14:42

Time to mobilize & vote the ANC out!

  • Shirley - 2011-11-25 14:48

Cowardly spineless morons who prey on the old and defenceless!!! BRING BACK THE DEATH PENALTY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Jack - 2011-11-25 15:16

@ Braam that is where you slaughtered our brothers. What price did you get.

      Frik - 2011-11-25 15:36

      Wouter - 2011-11-26 14:42

Jack it was fun to run then down and shoot them. It was war and belive me they)WSAPO)was good in the bush but boet the boere was better...period...The only thing that make me cry was the Bible in one's pocket..... yes he had a afrikaans bible with him....and a letter to his sister in still bothers me today but I pray for forgiveness but it seems to me forgiveness don’t come easy if your heart is not right and with the attacks against my ppl don’t help either so the feeling of murdering someone who hurts my ppl is still there…

  • John - 2011-11-25 15:26

time to establish an indepedent cape and appeal to the the UN for hate crimes against humanity. these morons have had power for 18 years. the place is much worse than it ever was and the anc blames all its probems on apartheid.

      emile.eley - 2011-11-26 08:50

And how exactly do you intend to secede John? You must stop drinking so early in the day.

  • Lionel - 2011-11-25 15:35

I am all for the "new"SA etc but jees SA was a helluva lot safer in the apartheid days!!!!!!!!!!

  • Phillip - 2011-11-25 15:36

Hunt them down and kill them in public!!!

  • Victor - 2011-11-25 15:45

  • Winsome - 2011-11-25 20:09

86 & 84 Years of age. This is truly a cowardly act of barbarism against the aged who most likely cannot put up a good defence.

  • Faith - 2011-11-26 01:24

  • Sad Sack - 2011-11-26 10:32

I have said it earliar this week and I am saying it again "I am not a racist, so help me God for how long will I still be able to say this. Have you ever heard of a dying women on her hospital bed being raped by two, not one sick bastard but two, male nurses. Then they use poverty as an excuse, do you need to rape to satisfy your hunger? What resistance can a 86 year old man offer, these bastards are cowards. Please people don't call them animals, because animals don't do this. This is something from hell!!!!!

  • Esperanca - 2011-11-26 11:26

I find most of your racial comments uncalled for. People are using this platform to vent their ugly feelings by calling each other names, tell me (as some of you are saying others are un educated)you educated people how are your comments helping? Challenges should make us better people not bitter people. i lost my whole family in a farm killing of 3 siblings i have only one, lost my parents at the age of 12, i am still trying to get through it but some of your comments are just annoying. perhaps to some of you this is a joke, thats sad.

  • CarolynDewrance - 2011-11-26 11:59

Catch them and then hang them from the nearest tree. more then likly the couples gardner.

  • velastardust - 2011-11-26 12:36

Vredendal used to be such a crime free area. Where did these criminals come from? Slack ass government's fault. Last two top cops have both been criminals. What can one expect? Better to be prepared to protect yourself.

  • Ric - 2011-11-26 13:57

Not another case of a firearm being available and not used due to not being readily available... I know these guys are elderly, but all farmers know they are being targeted so should adopt a semi-military mindset i.e. keep your firearm and plenty of spare magazines and ammunition with you at all times, have some form of portable communication not dependent on power or phone lines and have some system in place to provide advanced warning when intruders enter the premises. They should also have a section of their house that can be totally secured at night (e.g. heavy duty burglar bars and internal slam-lock doors) such that at the very least attackers would have to take some time and make a lot of noise to penetrate. Also, be fair and polite to domestic workers and farm workers, but don't trust anyone - remember, even if these guys are genuinely on your side, they could easily be forced to help attackers gain entry or simply just be overheard in the local tavern chatting about how the boss has lots of expensive things lying about.

  • Mantsho - 2011-11-26 15:06

This cannot stop,it keeps going on and on,still goverment cannot do more, you see for the children.women and elderly,SA is a very dengerous country to live.

  • Tobie - 2011-11-26 19:29

  • paul.prinsloo3 - 2011-12-13 17:24

Vredendal features so many times in these reports that I would suggest police and inhabitants in that area have a deeper look into matters there.

  • mpokeleng - 2012-02-16 12:21

lets thx GOD that they din't kill them, but that was the abuse 4 elderly people.
