Johannesburg - An 80-year-old man hijacked in Mayfair, Johannesburg, was found murdered at around 02:00 on Thursday, police said.

The elderly man had been travelling with his 23-year-old grandson when they were hijacked by three armed men at around 20:00 on Wednesday night, said Lieutenant Kay Makhubela.

"The men dropped the young man in Dobsonville in Soweto and drove off with the old man," said Makhubela.

"The [grandson] walked to the police station and reported the incident."

Police launched a search and the vehicle, a white Honda, was found abandoned in the area.

"The old man was found in the boot of the car. He had been killed. He was shot dead," said Makhubela.

No arrests had been made.

Police were investigating a case of murder and hijacking.

They appealed to anyone with information on the crime to contact the authorities.
