Elderly man hit by speeding bakkie

2012-08-13 11:48

Johannesburg - An elderly man died when he was hit by a bakkie while crossing the N17 near Orlando West, Soweto, on Monday morning, said Johannesburg emergency management services.

Spokesperson Synock Matobako said the man was jaywalking around 07:30 when he was hit by a bakkie travelling at high speed. He was declared dead on the scene.

There was no bridge over the highway in that area, but a wall had been built to prevent people from crossing the road, he said.

"Unfortunately, there is a break in the wall where people walk through."

Matobako appealed to pedestrians not to cross highways illegally and to motorists to be cautious in areas where there could be pedestrians crossing.

I've seen padestrians running across the freeway UNDER the bridge built for them to cross over.

This is a common occurance on some roads, such as the R59 from the Vaal to Alberton. Not a month goes by when there is not a dead pedestrian on the sie of the road. Serious intervention is needed, especially as the driver has charges laid against him after hitting a pedestrian he has little chance of avoiding.

Agree - And the driver having being charged is just no right - for want of a better term. The pedestrian should NOT be crossing the road at unmarked areas, but sadly they think they are untouchable.

Why did the chickens cross the road: To run away from ANC factional in-fighting. To get laid?
