Johannesburg - An elderly man has been rescued after injuring himself on a fishing boat off the Mossel Bay coast, the NSRI in the Western Cape said on Tuesday.

The man, 71, was injured when heavy deck gear fell on him, said the National Sea Rescue Institute's (NSRI) deputy commander at Mossel Bay Andre Fraser.

A request for medical assistance was received at 01:00, and the vessel was reached just after 03:00, he said.

A paramedic found that the man had a broken arm and had bruised his head and back.

He was stabilised and placed on a stretcher before being taken to shore and transported to hospital.

Wow, why did it take them so long to get to the poor old man? Glad he is okay tho.

Stella i worked at sea myself, it all depends on how far from shore the fishing vessel was, and sea conditions, looking out my window now , huge swell running so all of that influences reaction time for those Salty NSRI types

Stella - please remember that all NSRI crew members are unpaid volunteers who have full time jobs, etc. They left their families and beds at 1 am in the morning to go to the assistance of this gentleman. I am sure that they got to him as quickly as they could. The NSRI does great work and should be commended for all their actions.
