Durban - An elderly woman has been killed in what medics have described as a “freak accident” on Durban’s Inkosi Albert Luthuli Freeway on Tuesday.

The woman, understood to be in her 70s, was killed when she was hit by a flying wheel and side-shaft while sitting in the seat of a minibus taxi.

Rescue Care spokesperson Garrith Jamieson said the woman had succumbed to her injuries before paramedics arrived at the scene.

“In nearly 20 years of working as a paramedic, I have never seen anything like this. It was a freak accident,” he said.

Jamieson said the minibus taxi was travelling towards the city when the wheel and connected side-shaft flew off a bakkie.

“The wheel came off the bakkie and bounced around the roadway before it hit the concrete centre divider and bounced into the side of the minibus. We think that the metal shaft pushed through the window and hit the woman,” he said.

“She sadly died as a result of her injuries and three other passengers sustained minor trauma from the flying glass. They were treated at the roadside by paramedics and then taken to a nearby hospital by ambulance.”
