Durban - Mistaking the accelerator for the brake resulted in a near miss for an elderly woman on Tuesday when she careered her car into a wall.

Crisis Medical spokesperson Neil Powell said the 78-year-old woman, from Umgeni Park, was lucky to emerge with only minor injuries.

“It is alleged she accidentally hit the accelerator instead of the brakes and hit a wall. The force of the impact dislodged her from her seat and she was stuck in the car. It had come to rest flush against the wall of her house,” he said.

“Bystanders had to move the car before she could be freed from the vehicle.”

She was stabilised and treated on scene before being taken to hospital.
