Johannesburg - Fifty pupils from Eldorado Park Secondary School received bicycles from the Gauteng transport department on Friday.

The selected children were forced to walk long distances to school, said Gauteng transport MEC Ismail Vadi.

"The beneficiaries are those who stay six or more kilometres from the school," Vadi said.

"Look after your bicycle. Do not trade it for drugs."

The beneficiaries each received a black-and-yellow bicycle, a matching helmet and a reflective belt.

Before the hand-over, a safety officer went through several safety tips.

The pupils were taught road signs and how to ensure their bicycles were roadworthy before a trip.

"Before you use your bicycle, check your brakes are working and check if the tyres are inflated properly," the safety officer said.

The excited cyclists then had a test ride around the school premises.
