Employer 'watched' as dogs maul domestic

2011-05-30 08:01

Vereeniging - A domestic worker has accused her employer of simply watching while their three vicious dogs attacked her, the Sowetan newspaper reported on Monday.

"I thought the dogs were going to kill me and frantically scream," said Lerato Masemola from her bed at Kopanong Hospital near Vereeniging where she is being treated for bites on her right leg.

But her employers Rudi and Karin Reinecke said on Sunday, that Masemola sustained her injuries when she fell from their high wall when she tried to scale it.

"As the dog grabbed and removed chunks of my flesh I scream to get their attention but they just stood and watched," Masemola said.

@Gin - Exactly. @Editor - This is not a FB update, please ask your reporters to at least try and compile a complete story beforehand. Any Dr/Nurse/etc can clearly see the diff between a bite and a fall.

Wow you guys now want all the facts before you comment, this is really rich!

      Lekabisto - 2011-05-30 11:23

They got the story off of the Sowetan newspaper, dont think they doing any journalism to begin with!

      GinSA1 - 2011-05-30 11:25

I take it you have a point Thangy? What is it? Perhaps you enjoy reading snippets of something called News. They are called NEWS24 - do you get it?

      GinSA1 - 2011-05-30 11:38

This is the story in the Sowetan with much more detail, so what happened News24. This happened 2 weeks ago, so surely you could have gotten more detail from the cleaner at the hospital, let alone the medical staff!!!!! Domestic worker mauled by dogs May 30, 2011 | Alfred Moselakgomo | 70 comments But her boss says she fell while climbing over the wall A DOMESTIC worker has accused her employers of simply watching while their three vicious dogs attacked her. "I thought the dogs were going to kill me and frantically screamed," said Lerato Masemola from her bed at Kopanong Hospital in Vereeniging, where she is being treated for bites on her right leg. But her employers, Rudi and Karin Reinecke, said yesterday that Masemola sustained her injuries when she fell while she tried to scale their high wall. "As the dogs grabbed and removed chunks of my flesh I screamed to get their attention but they just stood and watched," Masemola said. It was the second time that the boerboel dogs had attacked Masemola at her workplace in Rabasdaal near Vereeniging. The first incident happened last month. The latest attack was two weeks ago. She said yesterday that her bosses had not been to see her since they took her to hospital 12 days ago. She has been working for the Reineckes for four months. Last week Masemola had to undergo surgery for a skin graft as doctors battled to repair a wound caused by the dogs ripping off the flesh from her leg. "A neighbour who heard my screams was the one who helped and threw objects to scare the dogs away," she said. She said after the first incident the police simply accompanied her back to her workplace and advised her employers to lock up the dogs when Masemola was at work. This time she has not opened a case because she was taken straight to the hospital after the attack. But she plans to report the incident as soon as she has been discharged. Police spokesperson Lieutenant- Colonel Katlego Mogale said she was not aware of the first incident but promised to investigate. When Sowetan visited Masemola in hospital on Friday she was in pain. Masemola's employers denied that her hospitalisation was as a result of the dog attack, but rather that Masemola had climbed over the wall when leaving the workplace, further hurting her wounded leg. But the couple admitted to the first dog attack and said they even took Masemola to hospital and paid the admission fee. Asked why Masemola jumped over the wall to leave the workplace instead of leaving through the remote controlled gate, Karin said it was because her son returned from school at 2.30pm and Masemola had wanted to leave around 1pm for hospital. Rudi said Masemola had complained about not feeling well.

      DW - 2011-05-30 12:32

Ok Gin, this gives more detail. However why would the domestic need to climb over the wall to go to the hospital if the employers were actually at home (watching her be attacked)? Why did she not simply ask them to open the gate for her? And if she has been attacked by the dogs before, why would she now expect them to react differently when climbing over the wall? I am not saying that she is guilty of anything or that the employers are necessarily innocent, but the reporter is still not asking the right questions (although has done a better job than News24 reporter).

      Thangy - 2011-05-30 13:01

@GinSA1 Clearly you need help with this one. The quality on reporting on this website has always been shoddy. My comment was in reference to the general approach on this website. Had the header read "Farmer shot dead on farm" noene would need more information, ppl wouldn't be using terms like "if she got bitten by the dogs" and so forth. Now, DO YOU GET IT?!?

      GinSA1 - 2011-05-30 15:14

Yep DW, it makes you think doesn't it. I see my initial post has been removed, which was directly under vapourtrail's.............. Momberg does NOT and never has appreciated his skills as a Writer or Editor being questioned...............

      photonic - 2011-05-31 13:18

@Gerrt:why must you generalize and label all white south africans as evil and then end your post with a threat? Just because a few morons that comment on your are racist ar$seholes doesn't mean we all are. It's the same as making a blanket statement like "Blacks are stupid". I can understand your anger at the comments made but your response does nothing to improve things. Think, man, Think!

  • TamaraSays - 2011-05-30 08:11

That's terrible. They should be made to pay all her medical bills, and then some, if that's the case. I do believe that they are, in any case, liable? I know they are if it happens on public property.

      DW - 2011-05-30 10:56

Sounds to me that it happened on private property ie in their yard. Not sure why the domestic servant would be climbing over the wall. The dogs are probably trained to attack anyone coming over the wall. Bad reporting. Need more facts.

      TamaraSays - 2011-05-30 21:49

Would depend, however. If she had permission to be in the house, and she clearly did, then they would still be liable. On the other hand, I worked with dogs all through high school and college, and even though I knew what I was doing, you wouldn't have found me taking chances with dogs I knew were aggressive. Again, I suppose, it will be up to the cops to figure out what really happened, and who is liable. Still, common decency would, in my opinion anyway, dictate that the owners of the dogs would pay for her hospitalisation? Or does that fall outside of the scope of possiblity in South Africa?

      Virginia - 2011-05-31 10:24

DW she was probably scaling wall to get out of the jaws of the dogs. People who have these vicious dogs should not employ domestic's, because they a trained to hurt intruders no matter who you are, look what has happened to some of the owners themselves, their own dogs turn on them.

@g7 if those dogs are in his yard and the maid were warned of the dogs, the owner would not be liable for any damage. in any case lets hear the full story first before jumping to conclusions, we might just be barking up the wrong tree.

      Akhona - 2011-05-30 11:00

@ Akhona: Do you remember the recent Bono incident, or the Malema incident where two newspapers had to apologize??? It is the most intelligent comment posted so far! P.S. Electronic Cemetery - 2011-05-30 12:01

It's crap reporting because there is only half a story guys... Why jump onto the race bandwagon when it really isn't necessary? Yes the domestic worker was a person of colour and the owners were, or at least it appears, white but surely logic must prevail... Why would two people just watch another get mauled? Was there a dispute of some kind? Were the people in fact "watching" or simply at home and not able to react in time... Those that have been bitten by dogs will understand that dogs can react and attack in seconds and it would be easy to think those around did not try to help you or try stop the dogs... Who stopped the dogs from mauling this lady if not the owners? This should be in the story... Again those that know dogs know that once frenzied they are unlikely to just release a screaming victim of their own choice especially in a group of 3 like that. All the commentators here are asking for is a complete picture so they can make an educated assumption about the story, as it stands the story is vague... Why must EVERYTHING in SA be about race for some people?! Can it not just be a victim and a perpetrator/suspect and a crime or allegation?

  • tkotze - 2011-05-30 08:24

If the owners did watch an attack happening they need to be served with much more than hospital bills. But it does look as if this journalist did stop short of doing a complete story. Did the employee try to climb over a wall, fell back on the ground and was bitten once in which case most normal people will be so shocked and have delayed reactions that they can't really be blamed if they didn't react in 2 seconds, and a guard dog does typically not like people climbing on walls. But yes, I agree with 3 sides to any story, third being the truth - one thing we do know is that if the employers are guilty they will be held accountable but lets not start the whole new "typical white" attitude - I would not let something happen, and neither would any of my white friends and family.

  • ekke - 2011-05-30 08:25

      Boer Malema - 2011-05-30 18:20

@Skubbe. A friend of mine, who is a journalist, had an interview with the victim. I don't speculate like the others. I also accept when I am proven wrong; I don't base my judgement on racial stereotypes, as doing so would undermine all the years I have spent getting an education. I am a different version of Malema for I believe Whites, Blacks, Asians, and Coloreds can work together for a better S.A. It just grates me to read about Whites whining about how better S.A would have been had they been in power, and forgetting that they screwed up when they had a chance. Blacks also nag me for painting a blame on Whites every time something goes wrong. Asians and Coloreds piss me off too, because they act like Chameleons; when it suits them they ingratiate with either Blacks or Whites. I am tired of this sh$t. It is time for everybody to stop the blame game and put their big and small heads together for a better future. Throw your ego off the window and work with others, what race they are should not matter. Jeez, I have never seen a country as divided as this one; but I have not lost hope.

      Gerrt - 2011-05-31 11:36

Boer Malema THANKS. South Africa-when you are at fault please admit and i must do the same. and when you are at fault i must constructively criticise you and you must do the same. Blacks and whites. I dont want to call anybody a chameleon, just be honest and constructive to SA as a rainbow nation

      Boer Malema - 2011-05-31 13:07

@Gerrt..."I dont want to call anybody a chameleon..." You are right; I have to admit that I was out of line with my chameleon comment. Like you put it, constructive criticism is one of the important things that will help us grow and build a more habitable SOUTH AFRICA.

      GinSA1 - 2011-05-30 11:40

I have posted the actual story in the Sowetan close to the top of the Comments. She had been bitten before (admitted to by the owners), yet still tried to scale the wall to leave work before the son got home (who obviously has the only key beside mom and dad) to go the hospital. If you've been bitten by the dogs before, are you still going to scale a wall in their presence? My dogs go insane when I use a ladder and head upwards to prune trees in the garden........... This marriage should dissolve me thinks............

Where do you come from? Must be a 1 race only country. Different races in any multi-racial country take shots at each other (admittedly in SA those shots are normally with an R5 or something equally dangerous), but don't try the high and mighty route. You don't live here, don't comment on our way of dealing with each other. If you're in need of entertainment, visit an entertainment centre and leave us black and white folk to sort each other out. G'bye now

      Boab - 2011-05-30 20:32

@GinSA1 - Get a global grip. There are very few countries that are "1 race only countries" as you put it. And to simply join in taking shots at people just because of their race is racist in the extreme. Your response to Bekong, dismissing him just because he is not from South Africa, is also bigotted. Black or white, South Africa does not need people like you.

This morning I read a news report on how a farmer in Limpopo was stabbed 15 times during a farm attack by black racists. Then I read this report and somehow I fail to feel anything for this woman. Sad isn't it. Crime seems to kill one's compassion.

      Sizwe - 2011-05-31 08:16

It seems your logic died first. This poor woman works for her living, and since her employers are alive and well, you cannot paint her in the same vane as murdering criminals. But of course you think in colour and fail to use logic, she cannot be victimised, if ever because of other people's actions, of which she has no control over...

It seems like one of the dogs wrote this story because of the poor writing skills, or is this a product of our Rainbow Nations schooling system? And why was the woman scaling a high wall, was the gate possibly locked to keep the dogs inside so they dont attack someone. Or were the dogs also now racially motivated? Did the owners not possibly think it was an intruder climbing over the wall? This poorly written article smells a little like a smear campaign of sorts and something with a hint or racialism invloved from the so called victims side as well as the reporter!Me smells a rat....

  • Podgette - 2011-05-30 12:48

Somewhere in between these two stories is the truth! How is this for a theory... The employee wanted to leave early and tried to climb over the wall and the dogs, being animals, could not differentiate whether she was coming or going so attacked her. It would be quite interesting to know why they attacked her the first time.

      penada - 2011-05-30 15:50

how is this for a story... it doesnt matter wether she was leaving early for whatever reason...she was bitten period, there is nothing interesting about why dogs bite people....from today i shall pray for your mother or daughter to get disfigured by dogs, then you can tell us all the interesting stories about the canine psyche

      Podgette - 2011-05-31 08:33

penada ~ you getting riled up for nothing. I am merely suggesting that there are two sides to the story and if she was leaving early without permission and therefore scaling the fence instead of going through the gate the animals may have become suspicious of her actions. It would be interesting to know why they bit her the first time because if it was unprovoked it would raise questions about the stability of the dogs. Get of your high horse and don't jump to conclusions - not everyone is on a witchhunt to blame either party. it DOES matter that if she was leaving early without permission and thereforce climbing over the fence, because it is not the normal way to enter or exit a property and the majority of the time would be cause for suspicion.

  • DW - 2011-05-30 12:56

It sounds to me like the dogs attacked her last month, requiring a skin graft (for which theemployers took her to hospital). In the second incident, she told her employers she did not feel well and they said she should wait until the child came home. She decided to leave early in any case and tried to climb over the wall, hurting herself in the process and now is upset with the employers so claims a second dog attack. This is all speculation, but no dogs in attack mode simply walk away if you throw things at them, especially if there are 3 of them. They would have torn her to shreds and probably killed her. There are holes in this story. Speak to the neighbours and find out the rest of it. The employers may well be liable for effectively locking her in, but she is not telling the whole truth here.

  • Jan - 2011-05-30 12:56

Yup knowing myself I would have dived right in between her and the three 50-80 kg boerbull dogs to immediately stop the attack (no sweat!) But really this is just bad reporting and a really one sided story...

      Warren - 2011-05-30 21:13

I bet we will never hear the truth (from any newspaper) because the fact of the matter is, the truth just doesn't sell newspapers!!!

  • Dids - 2011-05-30 13:55

Ok....and.....her word against the owners and obviously they are the tirants of the country......booo hhooooo...

  • Matt - 2011-05-30 14:10

In other countries, the fact she was attacked by a dog in the first place would result in the immediate putting down of the dogs, and prosecution of the owners. Here... hmm how's the weather?

      AjaxFiko - 2011-05-30 14:55

Lol, were the dogs ok after all that biting they had to do?

  • 9797 - 2011-05-30 14:13

According to Sowetan it is the second time, why can't this woman quit this job and look somewhere this dogs will end up killing her

  • jvdspuy - 2011-05-30 14:15

LOL, they prob forgot to leave the keys for her to get in OR she forgot her keys at home, either way she prob had to "scale" the wall to get in and what happens of course is the dogs see someone jumping over a wall and it's GAME OVER.

      jonny.g.gonzalez - 2011-05-30 19:26

Or they simply cannot trust a murderous black with their house keys.

  • dolphin - 2011-05-30 14:23

I am not sure that throwing anything at a frenzied boerbull or any other dog would do anything to stop the attack. I doubt that many people, if any, can pull 3 attacking boerbulls off of whatever/whoever is being attacked without the dogs turning on them also - this is what attacking dogs usually do.The lady was silly to climb over the wall, the dog must have thought she was trying to get in and were protecting their territory. But why was she climbing over the wall? Strange thing to do when she worked at the property.Needs to be established whether she was really leaving the property, via the wall nogal, or was she trying to get back in after having been let out.Being the victim of a dog attack must be terribly traumatising and terrifying so would not wish that on anyone. Just find the story strange.

      penada - 2011-05-30 14:49

dolphin and the rest of the community it has not been established that she was scaling any wall...that is what the employers said...the strange thing mostly for me is that if she worked there then surely the dogs would recognize her...the story is also too short, not enough details, but it seems to me the employers are the ones who are lying here....someone here said racist dogs sarcastically...i still know some places where dogs owned by whites are trained to attack black person (who was white)even confirmed thios to me after she was beaten by dogs saying normally those dogs would attack olny black people

      dolphin - 2011-05-30 16:30

PENADAN may I suggest you read the article sent in by SA1 above which apparently appeared in the Sowetan. The 2nd to last paragraph states that the lady scaled the wall deciding to leave the property that way rather than using the gate.Strange I would say.My domestic workers never scale the gate or walls or hedges when they leave or arrive for work.I would consider it demeaning for them to do so.Please don't try to turn this into a racial issue. The point here is that the lady scaled the wall for whatever reason and the dogs attacked her.I have always had german shephards and have taken them to the german shephard training club so they have been trained to obey. I have never trained them to attack anyone and would not have such a dog on my property - if they attack at random they are bound at some point to attack their owners. My dogs would protect me with their lives and I did not train them to do this. Anyone who knows anything about dogs will know that dogs protect their property whether in the wild or domesticated. I have been barked at and 'rushed' by dogs belonging to Indians and Africans when I take walks in my area and I don't believe for one minute those owners have trained their dogs to try to have a go at me because I am white. Ask any vet. They will tell you that dogs become accustomed to the racial group they are owned by and any other racial group is then not acceptable to them. You don't have to train a dog in this, it is natural behaviour for them.

      penada - 2011-05-30 16:44

thanks to the insight, i didnt know your dogs hate blacks because you are white...i have a rottie, and a puck...have indian friends, white friends too...all have been nice to them...i agree with you that dogs are territorial, the biting in itself i am not saying is racist...but it now becomes disgusting when people here would rather 1)blame the woman 2)complain there isnt enough info....when in fact one would think it is natural to sympathise with the woman...look at the posts here and your own...and what did u have to say...she is silly...truly sir, i find you revolting...and who says she was scaling the wall....the employers said that...."scaling a high wall". do you think an average black lady will have the physical ability to scale a high wall...please apply your logic, and see for yourself what appears likely...and one more thing...the only person who is silly here is you, for your lack of compassion

      dolphin - 2011-05-30 17:35

penada if you are referring to me in your comment may i say. 1) at no time have i said that because i am white my dogs will hate blacks.actually, my german shephards in fact loved my gardener and domestic lady-would give them wonderful welcomes and would give them a mouthful of barks when they left for home. 2)my dogs did not like strangers coming onto the property, no matter the colour and that would be when i was on high alert and kept them on leads.they also did not like anyone they did not know well coming onto the property, they were protective and again i would keep them on leads. being trained they were totally obedient and i was in full control whilst they were on lead.i am small and my shepherds could have pulled/dragged me anywhere they wanted because they are stronger than i am,but they didn't.3)all my dogs adored children, especially babies.i never trained them to be child/baby friendly, they grew up without little ones around but they loved little people anyway.4)i fully sympathise with the lady being attacked, as i have said before, it must be a terrifying experience and not one you get over easily, if ever. What I don't understand is why the lady - according to the newspaper account - was scaling the fence. If as she says the dogs had attacked her before why did she not wait to be escorted off the property by the owner when she left the property so she could leave via the gate and in safety - if the owner was at home as she says they were. Just asking.

penada - 2011-05-30 18:14 the article right...news24 did not say she was scaling a wall...the writer says the owners said she was scaling the wall and fell, sustaining her injuries...they therefore imply her wounds are not from dog bited but from the fall it i am saying does it make sense to you that a black woman would attempt to scale a high wall...come now...

      LBS - 2011-05-31 06:15

@dolphin - good posts both of them! Also pretty accurate summing up of the whole scenario in the absence of actual facts. One has to speculate as to why the facts are few and far between as the lack thereof only encourage racial insults and accusations. Pity. The Sowetan picture of the owner is interesting. One little Jack Russell and nary a Boerboel in sight - never mind 3 of them! Had the domestic been attacked by 3 Boerboels as claimed, she would have been ripped to shreds with bite marks on every conceivable parts of her head and body. The image in the paper has her sitting on a bed with a bandaged leg. Attacked by 3 dogs - I don't think so!

      dolphin - 2011-05-31 08:23

PENADA.It is clear that NEWS24 did not report the entire article as it appeared in the Sowetan newpaper.I suggested that you read the article kindly posted on this site by SA1 (scrolll up to it) and it is clear to me that you have not bothered to do this. Why? You are attacking writers on this site, writers who like me are sympathetic but still have questions,as well as writers who are not impressed with the way NEWS24 has reported this article. The Sowetan article clearly states that the lady in question was scaling the wall,(my question is why),the owners say the lady fell off of the fall and injured herself (my question is why was she on the wall). The lady says the owners watched the attack (my question is if the owners were at home why was the lady having to scale the wall to leave the property when she could have left via the gate and be accompanied by the owner for safety). So, maybe then you can answer these questions because I would be interested to know the answers and you seem to have the answers which is why you can be so judgemental.BUT PENADA whilst you get your knickers in a knot and appear to be determined to turn this into a racial issue, REMEMBER AS A WHITE I DO SYMPATHISE WITH ANYONE WHO IS ATTACKED BY DOGS.As a white I have never had to teach my dogs to attack anyone. As a white I know I could not stop my bull mastiff attack on a little dog that came in my garden-even when I beat my mastiff with a broom handle she felt nothing.Penada please answer!!

      dolphin - 2011-05-31 08:29

PENADA you are implying the owners are lying 'it has not been established the lady was scaling the wall. that is what the owners said'. Well Penada it has not been established either that the dog/s did attack the lady. That is what the lady said. So again I say. Bad reporting by NEWS24 has brought out the racial comments from you and others, the questions I and others ask and read properly, sympathy also. Climb off of your high horse and at least have the decency to apologise to me because you are accusing me of racialism, lack of sympathy and the inability to read and understand the article posted by SA1 as per Sowetan newspaper.

      dolphin - 2011-05-31 08:31

LBS. Thank you !!! Appreciate your reasonable response.

      dolphin - 2011-05-31 09:26

Penada.I have dogs for protection,to keep uninvited people out of my property.Anyone scaling the walls of my property are doing this why?Would an african woman scale my wall?Yes, if she wanted to.Could I as a decent white woman scale a wall?Yes if I wanted to even though I am a pensioner- a fit one at that.Would a dog attack me if I scaled someones wall even though I am white? Definitely. It does not know me,I am an intruder and colour does not matter.Would I scale the wall of a property knowing there are dogs there? Definitley no!! Would my neighbour's dogs attack if I scaled the wall of the property, even though the dogs know me, I pat and talk to them and feed them bones? One of the 3 I would not take a chance with.I swear she is menopausal and she is the smallest of the 3!Have my dogs ever attacked my Indian or African friends?Never! Having said that when I have had people working on my property my dogs seem to know IF there are trouble makers amongst them and they have been right every time!!!They have also not allowed any of the strangers to come near me. Had a german shephard who literally flew up from lying down to going for the throat of a lovely gentle workman handing me back a knife I loaned him.Thank goodness my dog was tied up but she thought I was in danger.Had another dog that 'escorted' a man off my property supposedly looking for work but he had a looooooong shoe lace tied to his wrist ready for use.Robbers were using shoe laces to strangle with in Dbn

      penada - 2011-05-31 09:32

dolphin i am not on a high horse or anything. i have read the sowetan article and i have read also the post by ginsa 1. again, both the post nor the article suggest that she was scaling the was the owner karin who said that, so it isnt a fact that she was scaling a wall...i am still to meet a person who needs a skin graft from a fall from scaling a wall, unless there was a huge abrasion as she fell at least 200meters while being grazed by a hard surface. now do u think a woman, never mind black or white, who is a domestic, can have the physical prowess to scale a wall to a height that should she fall she would injure herself such that she needs to ne hospitalised, let alone get a skin sir... i smell a rat here, i still dont see anything silly in a woman, a mother, a daughter being surgically reconstructed by canines!

      Ping Pong - 2011-05-31 11:17

Penada, you really are very daft - you are just not grasping it, yet you keep on stirring just to get reaction. Small minds... Dolphin is only questioning WHY THE WOMAN SCALED THE WALL, if (clearly) the owners were present. Now shut up and read the mails properly before commenting again.

      penada - 2011-05-31 12:27

no person tried to scale a wall you piece of crap, that is my point...the owners are lying, and you, you are an idiot

      Ping Pong - 2011-05-31 13:00

      Ha ha ha ha ha

      dolphin - 2011-05-31 13:06

Penada.About 6 years ago I jumped off of a retaining wall in my garden.I chose to jump because my alternative was to fall off of the wall having caught my foot in an uneven brick on our brick paving.I thought a controlled landing would be a better option. The wall is about waist height when I stand next to it.I don't remember landing-obviously blacked out for few seconds. Why the blackout? I smashed my foot on landing, had an emergency 3 hour operation to put the foot back together,3 screws and 2 pins later with plaster up to just below my knee I left the hospital the next day on crutches.I was not allowed to put the foot on the ground-for 8 weeks.A further op 4 weeks later to remove the wires and 2 weeks after that another 3 hour op to remove the screws.THAT WAS JUMPING OFF A NOT SO HIGH RETAINING WALL!!What damage can then be done from an even higher wall-you tell me.You are the expert.I would say a lot of damage could be done falling off of a high wall and depending on how you land and what you land on.If you land on bushes branches can rip chunks off skin off your leg or worse.Penada, you are hell bent on not accepting that reporters report what they are told-were the reporters there to witness the incident?Did not think so but you would rather believe the reporter who was not there than to be reasonable and accept it is possible the worker may not be telling the truth. We accept that someone is lying but there are still questions not answered. Why scale the wall?

      dolphin - 2011-05-31 13:26

Penada. So, you were there. You saw the lady did not scale the wall. You were there when the owners told the reporter the wall was scaled so you know WITHOUT ANY DOUBT the owner is lying. You would stand up in court and attest to this? Tell you what. I'll help you out here since you are in a corner and getting really annoyed with everyone who has put you there because you won't get off of your high horse. Yes, YOU ARE ON ONE !!! So here goes. The newspaper article on NEWS24 is badly written and the Soweta article gives more insight. In either case the reporters who DID NOT witness the incident reported on what they were told by owner and worker.Either the owner or the worker is lying but which one. As many have said so far, if the owner is lying then they must be held accountable if their dog/s attacked and caused injury and writers here have indicated their sympathy if this is the case. If the worker is lying then what was she really doing scaling the wall? So. I have summed it all up for you and in all your protesting this is really what you have been meaning to say. There we go. You are now out of the corner and if you have any sense you will walk away, stop arguing and don't get yourself into another fix. Don't bother to retaliate any further because you simply cannot answer the question I have asked repeatedly - WHY WAS THE LADY SCALING THE WALL, as reported in the the article. Man, this is like being a hamster on a wheel. And again, yes I could scale a wall even at 63!

  • AjaxFiko - 2011-05-30 14:53

OMG, were the dogs OK from all that biting??? Were the employers ok after watching such a horrific scene?? They should see someone. . . And what was that dumb woman doing trying to jump a wall while those cute puppies were trying to playing with her, is she crazy?? Seriously people, let's be human for once in our lives. Please.

      AjaxFiko - 2011-05-30 15:00

Oh and white people are angels, they would never watch. They would pray while it happens, seeing as they wouldn't be able to stop their own dogs.

      penada - 2011-05-30 15:18

u right, y would they watch such an uncivilised act by a black person...letting themselves get mauled by dogs, and they must never interfere with the dogs as while they are playing with the one person who probably pours their food and water, wouldnt want to traumatise the poor dogs now...

      dolphin - 2011-05-30 16:55

AjaxFico. Before being so critical may I suggest that you take 3 Boerbulls for a walk and see how well you manage to control them when they get excited by the dogs in the gardens you walk past. Then may I suggest that when you realise how powerful these animals are, attempt to imagine them furious at someone scaling the wall of their territory and their naturally going into attack mode to protect their territory. Then whilst you are imagining the awful attack, because it would be awful, think of the weight and power of these dogs and tell me you could with ease have pulled them off of the lady being attacked. Quite frankly, I think the sight would be so awful and fearsome you would not go anywhere near the dogs because it is a known fact that they could turn on you or their owners if you try to interfere.Dog attacks are traumatic and many people don't ever get over their fear of dogs if they have experienced this.As a dog lover I can only say, don't go onto a property where there are dogs unless you know it is safe to do so.Respect their natural inclination to protect their territory and 'family'. Would you walk into the territory of a lion? Nope? Because you know it will attack? Yes. Dogs are wild animals, domesticated up to a point, treat them with respect and keep off of their territory. We have dogs for protection and they will do their job without us teaching them to, it is called natural instinct.

  • Chloe - 2011-05-30 15:56

G-d you people write badly. NEWS24 please would you read your editorials before they reach the internet. May we have the full story please: What kind of dogs, why did they stand and watch, exactly what happened, what kind of injuries did she sustain...

  • Truth - 2011-05-30 16:21

This is a true reflection of bad publicity, something stupid like this can cause people to hate and even kill each other. I'm not saying what happened to the lady is stupid, i'm all about the facts of the case. The media should be charged if there is gaps in this story that is not the truth. We have the right to information and it seems like the media has a hidden agenda.....

      Brent Kotze - 2011-05-30 19:41

Yeah, again gud ppl I've read all ur comments 4rom vapourtrail 2 Truth what I've found out is dat u r all emotional abt dis incident. Ok let us all be reasonable here & objective as well as argue w/out prejudice. The News24 was reporting an incident dat occured. The public hqs qright 2 info then is served b'coz they read abt dis. The factual story is not our duty we are not Editors. Then the victim has a right 2 lay a charge wth police against the perpetrator in dis case will be dogs however the vicarious liability comes in here. The owner(s) of the dogs has to prove what happened. The whole story abt da scaling of da wall or da owners merely looking not helping is for the evidence collection purposes not for us. We can say thanx 2 News24 for reporting dat incident now we now abt a lady bitten by dogs in "Vereeniging" @ Dolphin u put it right when u analyses the behaivour of these dogs as u r da owners. So fo me I think the owner knows these dogs beta dan any of us who r argueing here. Who ever needs full story follow this incident to the court if reported. then as well watch it again on news there will be new developments about the story. Be happy SAcans we r in a process of building & mending this nation.

Its all those songs they keep singing to their dogs about maul the maid, maul the maid. I blame the dogs entirely, acting like bloody animals and all. But on a serious note, the dogs should be put down, they are dangerous and if the employers just watched on, then they should be put down as well

      Bigboet - 2011-05-31 08:38

@Francis, why don't we put every single person that attacked someone down, you have a mind set of a child. You keep dogs (wild animals) then when they act on instinct you want to kill them what is wrong with you.
