Johannesburg - A man died after his car crashed into the barriers on the N4 highway in Pretoria on Saturday afternoon, paramedics said.

"A report from the scene indicates that the vehicle veered violently off the road and smashed into the barriers with such force that the engine was ripped from the car," Netcare 911 spokesperson Chris Botha said.

The man died before paramedics arrived at the scene.

"Paramedics... found the roadway obstructed with accident debris and the twisted frame of the vehicle that came to rest on its roof, the driver was ejected from the wreckage and landed on the other side of the barriers on the verge."

The cause of the accident was being investigated.
