Enough is enough - hostage drama cops

2012-11-20 09:39

Bloemfontein - Free State police ended a 20-hour prison hostage drama early on Tuesday after deciding not to continue negotiating with two prisoners who had taken a doctor hostage.

"At about 10 minutes before 7 o'clock this morning, the doctor was rescued and both suspects apprehended," spokesperson Thandi Mbambo told AFP.

She said the doctor was unharmed but might require treatment for shock and trauma.

The prisoners at the Mangaung correctional centre, near Bloemfontein, are believed to have used sharp surgical instruments to take the doctor and a nurse hostage on Monday.

They later released the nurse, but kept the physician.

Police said the prisoners kept changing their demands, from first asking for a transfer to a prison in Gauteng, to later demanding better food.

Early on Tuesday, police decided that "enough is enough [and] a decision was taken that there won't be any more negotiations," Mbambo said.

The Mangaung correctional centre is jointly operated by the government and British security outfit G4S.

So what would you guys like to know? What outfits they were wearing while rescuing them? What cuffs were used to cuff them? Nobody was killed, the situations was diffused, a rescue team clearly went in and apprehended the suspects. Do you want blueprints?

How did the British security outfit G4S get the tender? This is making a mockery of our BEE codes of conduct. Quite pathetic if you ask me!

      michael.horton.566790 - 2012-11-20 10:02

The prisons needs people who will not sleep on the job... No other explanation required.

      kenpeg.dawson - 2012-11-20 10:07

  • luzanne.marais - 2012-11-20 10:01

    Negotiating with criminals...shoot them!!

  • sharon.hamilton.737001 - 2012-11-20 10:01

G4S, the same outfit that is being sued by the British government for lack of service delivery during the London olympics, G4S that has a torrid reputation for running the public enterprises which were sold to it, Corporate greed knows no bounds. Nice to know that our public works are being sold off to private enterprise, one question for our dear Corrupticians, WHERE IS ALL THE MONEY FROM THE SALE, AND WHERE DO THE PROFITS GO

  • Socrates Vannemerwe - 2012-11-20 10:32

China has the best hostage policy: shoot the hostage takers the first opportunity you get.

  • mart.botha - 2012-11-20 10:35

G4S is responsible for the events leading up to and the security that resulted in the hostage taking...STF for cleaning up the mess ! Well done STF, from all South Africans for whom crime and criminals are abhorrent.

  • ingrid.oberholzer - 2012-11-20 10:36

Since when is our prisons managed by outsiders and the government nogal???? Which cadres are on the board of G4S???How much is it costing us as the tax payers????

      mark.singh.9889 - 2012-11-20 11:35

Ingrid, does it really matter? They did their job. The only reason these thugs wanted a transfer is because the G4S is doing their jobs and not letting the criminals run the prison like everywhere else.

  • emile.c.emajor - 2012-11-20 10:47

So it took them 20 Hours to decide that... Eish

  • TshilidziPhuravhathu - 2012-11-20 11:05

Only in SA... they didnt want to go out but rather just relocate to another prison. they could have just granted their first request and the matter would have been concluded withing an hour.

  • angela.henderson.5623 - 2012-11-20 12:42

Still a better love story than twilight

  • lood.botha.1 - 2012-11-21 01:30

Is this part of positioning for the Presidency in Mangaung (to score points/seniority/credibility)?

  • thobekile.sibindi.71 - 2012-11-21 10:05

Bravo!!!yeyi, you prisoners rock! Yeep.!I will tell you one thing you all that dont know...this prison is full of nonsense they think they are the best thing that has ever happened to prisoners. dont support crime but to give them prisoners paap and boiled carrots/beetroot is bul. These people grow their vegetables and who eats them? our tax money pays for these people and in return they are given this rubbish. Its true we are not being told the whole story here or the real truth for that matter. Creepy officials have been covering up for too long.. not so long ago a pastor at this prison was stabbed???? They covered up the story..this is a tip of the iceberg. I wish the public prosecutor could do an investigation. this has to stop before its too late. the poor doctor has been trumatised now for what? On top of being paid by our monies they sell stuff to prisoners at 3 times what its costing out here. where will the prisoned peeps get the money to buy from their crapy store as they are being give rubbish for food. Their intentions are to starve the prisoners to death. their telephone system is too expensive prisoners cant even afford to communicate with their loved ones. They are there coz they messed up but how many peeps are walking our streets here with inflated pockets and egos and having it all. This is just a sick system. Use our monies properly and build proper prisons that will habilitate these people properly.
