Erco 'no longer accredited by Umalusi'

Johannesburg - Afrikaans Christian education council Erco has had its accreditation withdrawn by Umalusi, the assessment monitoring body said on Tuesday.

"We have withdrawn provincial accreditation for the Eksamenraad vir Christelike Onderwys (Erco) with effect 1 October," Umalusi CEO Mafu Rakometsi told reporters in Johannesburg.

"Erco and its predecessors have not been successful in establishing a viable body with sufficient numbers of learners or a sufficient management process."

He said the council had gone through four different heads of exams since 2008.

Sixty learning centres and about 500 to 600 affected matric students, including some who were home-schooled, would now write their exams under the basic education department.

Umalusi is a monitoring body for the basic and higher education departments, and the Independent Examinations Board.
