Cape Town - A man who escaped from holding cells in George was re-arrested at his home on Thursday, Western Cape police said.

He was taken into custody in Lawaaikamp at 06:00 and charged with escape from lawful custody, in addition to an original charge of attempted murder, spokesperson Captain Bernadine Steyn said.

He apparently escaped from the Conville police station on Tuesday with another man.

He was being held for allegedly shooting and assaulting a man in Borcherds at the weekend. His accomplice, arrested on Wednesday, was being held for theft and possession of tik.

Both men would appear in Thembalethu Magistrate's Court on Friday.

"You were arrested for a violent crime and kept in holding cells for a number of days pending a bail appearance (before a judge). Somehow you managed to break free and had a two day freedom before being rearrested in your own home. Write a one page essay chronicling your short-lived freedom."
