Johannesburg – A serial rapist and murderer who escaped from court just before he was due to be sentenced has been spotted in Soweto, reported The Star on Thursday.

An investigating officer checked the area where he was seen but Lungisani Mdlolo was no longer there though it is suspected that he is still in the region.

Mdlolo escaped from the main entrance of the Palm Ridge Magistrate’s Court just hours before he was due to be sentenced.

Gauteng police were on Wednesday investigating whether one of their own had assisted Mdlolo is his escape, Sapa reported. It was said he wasn’t wearing leg chains when he was brought up from the holding cell to the courtroom.

He was convicted of murder, three rapes, five armed robberies, 10 housebreakings and possession of an unlicensed firearm.

Police have appealed to anyone with information to call the Kliptown police station on 011 959 0500 or Crime Stop on 08600 10111.
