Eskom takes down online electricity sales

Johannesburg - Eskom's online prepaid electricity vending system will be shut down from 20:00 on Thursday, it said.

"Our vending system has been very slow and even offline for the last couple of days," said Eskom spokesperson Hillary Joffe.

"We are taking down the system from 20:00 to look at it overnight."

Eskom was doing this so that it could identify the root cause of the problem and fix it.

Joffe said the vending system would be switched on again on Friday morning.

"We are taking this very seriously and Eskom's top management is looking at the problem. We regret the inconvenience and apologise to our customers."

Eskom was looking at creating a system that was more stable, said Joffe.

      If you want to fix the problem don't let Eskom's top management look at the problem, get experts and secondly to determine the root cause of slow system response doesn't require the system to be shut down. How will you determine your network performance between routers, concentrators, etc. and how will you perform stress and volume testing on your servers or mainframes if the system is down. Go and talk shyte somewhere ells.

    Very happy to hear you guys at Eskom will be working on the problem. Was Hillary Joffe (Eskom spokesperson) referring to Johannesburg only, as I did not see Cape Town mentioned anywhere. This is completely unacceptable that you, being the monopoly, take three (or more) days to sort out a problem like this. We have no trust in Eskom anymore, you have to Step Up, or Step Out!! Eskom's service is pathetic!!!!

      As much as I agree I have to say though that even though we had 4 major power outages last week. Each one was fixed within a few hours. Telkom takes 2 weeks to decide if they are going to replace a stolen cable in the middle of randburg and another 2 weeks to put the cable up.

    Pathetic! These are the same incompetents who will award themselves big bonuses. I listened to entire e-tv news at 1900and there was no mention of this.

    Well I have been without power since yesterday morning and all the call center keep saying is " The system is slow but definitely NOT offline". Well guys they were lying. I am very close to ripping the box out the wall and connecting the power direct. Nearly every informal house has free electricity why not me

    I live in the Swartland Western Cape. We have not been able to buy prepaid for two days. Today in the local Spar I wad talking to two ladies who had stocked their fridges with their end of month wages. It's 40 Deg here. Eishkom - totally unacceptable to be off line and waste people's very hard earned money. Shame on you!!! Get it right - u encourage pre-paid - now get with the programme.

    The objective of shutting down online vending systems could be positive, but the manner it has been done is not accepted. Although this is said to be from 20H00 on Thursday 2 February 2012, but in the Eastern Cape, and probably the KZN, this problem has been affacting consumers negatively. Inconvinience caused by ESKOM has been felt throughout the country. This should have been announced to consumers well in advance rather than exposing consumers to risks of rotten groceries, malfunctioning of alarm systems, etc. If consumers are alerted in time, they would have made other plans. ESKOM must treat customers as sources of their revenue than as consumers of electricity. Khwalo @ Lusikisiki

    "What a wait and what a loss" No vendor in Mafikeng could assist, all claim a conection error. Online vendor walked the extra mile and place my transaction in a queing system. we hold thumbs ;-)

    So with the City of Cape Town you can register your meter and buy online. No such system with Eskom. Have to drive to Melkbos from Tableview to get electricity. So now it csts an extra 20 bucks in fuel. MUPPETS the lot of them!

    This is a customer comment we received on our webiste today!! "I think millions of users are affected by the problems Eskom has country wide. I am not happy about the situation, but would like to thank Eskom, their call centre specifically, for referring me to Prepaid24, an online company. I registered in a minute on their site, and made payment by EFT. This all happened on 2 February, while the system was down. Two minutes after I made my payment I received a sms stating that the system is down, and that they will keep on trying to process my request. In total I received 3 sms from them on the 2nd, reassuring me that the transaction will be effected the moment Eskom comes online. On 3 February, 6 o’clock the morning I received my sms with my tokens, and I could recharge my meter. This was absolutely GREAT!! I did not have to get into the car multiple times to drive to an aray of shops and I also did not have to draw cash!!! Fantastic Prepaid24, congratulations Eskom!!
