Evaton protests puzzle police

2012-03-22 07:45

Johannesburg - Criminals may have been the source of a "satanic" rumour at Living Waters Church in Evaton, south of Gauteng, police said on Thursday.

"While we were busy with unrest at the Living Waters Church two supermarkets and at least six foreign traders were looted," police spokesperson Constable Tshifhiwa Mitileni said.

The crimes and the accompanying violent protests, which have been going on since Tuesday, have pushed Evaton into the "red" making it a high crime zone, he added.

The Evaton protests were triggered by a rumour that the church was satanic and that children were being kidnapped by church leaders.

Mitileni said there had never been any complaint about the church before and police were puzzled by the protests.

"If this was the case why has nobody ever laid a charge or complained to us about children disappearing."

The 1 000-strong crowd of protestors were also not all from Evaton but appeared to have arrived from surrounding areas.

"There is something else at the bottom of this but we will find out what it is," he said.

On Tuesday eight people were arrested. There were more arrests but the exact number of arrests could not be confirmed on Thusrday.

"Today people are going back to work and the situation is quieter," Mitileni said.

1,000 people rush in and plunder based on a mere rumour! Sounds about right for Africa! Maybe the police should get better training to recognize the warning signs of Anarchy

      FNWitch - 2012-03-22 08:18

I remember the same thing happening in England!

      Nkulekweni - 2012-03-22 09:55

Protests have been happening in England for centuries..and they follow the same pattern. Last year's protests were not the first. Your racism is too too desperate. One wonders whether you are one of the 10% White South Africans that have African blood and you therefore have this constant and desperate need to denigrate Africans. Were'nt some of Hitlers most ardent antisemitic generals of Jewish ancestry. CF.( A study of the racial leneage of news24 most racist contributers would make a fascinating read. This kind of desperate racism has to have some psychologial explanation.

Once you see teens protesting you must know that there is no order and the criminals and the unemployed take advantage of the situation.

Um, maybe athiests see religion in a similar light...Don't be too quick to judge.....

  • robbieyahu - 2012-03-22 08:44

religion is evil period .... see how easily they use it for violence & theft ... the racists commenting here should remember that the roman catholics (christians) did exactly this as well !!! stirring up people to burn and rape and torture people and then declare others as witches and satanists etc. to kill the opposition and steal their land properties or homes for the "church" !!!!! realise what it is religion is evil !!!

  • George Jankie Watson - 2012-03-22 08:58

@robbleyahu, how right you are. And to all those racists , if Africa revolts you so much why don't you pack your crap and get the hell out !!!

Most of the people who comment on this article do not have first hand information. Besides, the article above is poorly written and does not include all the facts or a balanced viewpoint. The fact of the matter is, for the past 6-8 weeks, the local community radio station Thetha FM has been inundated with calls and conducting interviews with young pople who allege that they have been ubducted from their schools by those asociated with the church, brought to the church concerned, and had had their bodies tatooed by he church Priest. On numerous occassion the priest has been invited to come to the station to counter these allegations which are being collaborated by parents of the alleged victims. In one instance the presenter of the show called the Bishop of the church live during the show, only to have the phone dropped in his ears, to the listerners amazement! The Bishop, blatntly refuses to answer to these allegations and unfortunetely his refusal only serves to lend credibility to these allegations. As for the action taken by some members of the community in barricading the church and looting shops owned by foreign nationals, no "level headed" person should support the cause! Whether it's true that someone can actually cast a witchcraft spell or demonic powers on someone, for me, it's hard to believe. The fact is it's not a racial matter, but an individual opinion.

      David - 2012-03-22 09:53

@tlaksbanda, how right you are. Why are there comments flying around about racists and satanists, let this case be investigated and put the persons responsible for all the harm they are causing in jail, whether it is a god fearing bishop or a member of the community.

  • emokgojoe - 2012-03-22 11:29

another thing is this "WE DEMAND FREE HOUSES AND WATER SONG" what happened to working for things?? and shoot me if you can but the pple who i think deserve those houses are old ppl (50+) at least they suffered and as a result were not given fair opportunities in many aspects.shockingly ive never seen a 50yr old protesting for a house instead mostly u see ur 30+- someting going on and on about free everything on tv as if they worked for it..ppl dont get me wrong im black and extremely proud of it and theres a lot of us who work our backsides to get things in life but theres our brothers and sisters who think they are entitled to free hell with you make me sick and are a poor reflection of our beautiful race..i for one had no dad coz he was in exile for political reasons but do i hate white ppl for it? i demand free things no. do i go on burning things hell man just go back to hell and work ur butt like all of us.We have been thru a lot as a race world over but pls lets move on and prove other races wrong man by working hard..and nothing beats education..i know its not easy for some to get but the little you can grab put it in ur head and lock it there and stop spreading stupid vicious rumours, rather start one positive rumour like " hey hav u heard we need to go to school to get job and buy houses?" thats a gud one i can also spread.

What's to be puzzled about? They loot, they burn, they destroy and they're bussed in by the ANC - not rocket science people.

  • Zizi - 2012-03-22 14:06

The report is very shallow indeed and not very accurate. This has been going on since last year Oct/Nov and the insinuations/ allegations of satanism have been broadcast on a local radio station causing a lot of tension in the township (several members of this church were assaulted last year). Allegations were not only made against this church but several others in the area and have been fuelled through irresponsible "journalism" by the radio station. I'm surprised that this report says that the police claim to have no knowledge of this
