Ex-Blue Bull axe accused Christian, joker

2011-03-30 23:42

Durban. — Christian, joker and dedicated sportsman.

This is how the former Blue Bull who was arrested here in connection with a series of axe murders has been described in sports circles.

"If the allegations are true, it would be shocking. He is not the kind of person who would want to have a run-in with the law," said Eric Sauls, head coach of the SWD when the flanker played for the Eagles in 2002.

The 34-year-old former rugby player's name is known to Beeld.

He is expected to appear in the Durban Magistrate's Court on Thursday on three charges of murder and one of attempted murder after a number of men were decapitated with an axe in the south of the city in the past two weeks.

During one of the attacks he apparently accused his victim of raping his daughter and infecting her with HIV.

Sauls said the tall, well-built 34-year-old former flanker, who was born in Umtata, is very talented, and he believed he would have reached greater heights.

According to the profile on SA Rugby’s website the former rugby player scored two tries while playing for the Barbarians, Blue Bulls and Eagles between 1996 and 2002.

Sauls said the man is a Christian and a man of integrity.

"Someone of good character."

Former Springbok Bevan Fortuin also said he is "a good guy".

He was always the joker in the Eagles team, Fortuin said. They lost contact after 2002.

According to SA Rugby’s website the former flanker is unmarried.

Regarding the rape allegations, police spokesperson Vincent Mdunge said on Wednesday that the police are currently concentrating on the murder charges.

The question of whether the suspected axe murderer does have a daughter, and if so, whether she was raped, will possibly be investigated only much later.

Indications are that two Sundays ago the axe murderer first struck when he attacked a pedestrian in Mobeni. The man dodged the blow and fled.

About an hour later a security guard was decapitated in Lamontville.

It turned out on Wednesday that the silver car in which the victims were apparently followed in residential areas like Lamontville, Umbilo and Yellowwood Park was a rented car.

The police took possession of the car when a task team arrested the 34-year-old man at 01:30 on Tuesday at a house in Yellowwood Park.

An axe with a 40cm handle, as well as blood-stained clothes, were also found there.

If only farm murders were investigated this diligently

      KayZa - 2011-03-31 01:34

Just because the suspect is of a particular race your turning to farm murders as a defence. This guy committed crime and there is no excuse for that. Just three weeks ago, Mtubatuba High Court found 3 guys guilty of farm murders, just two weeks ago on News24 it was reported that a farm murder who has been elusive for two years has been found through a cellphone and is currently undergoing trial. You are using race as a bloody excuse and make a mockery of those who are really trying to put criminals to book

      Paul Mandla Nkosi - 2011-03-31 04:57

Stick to the article pleaes Bob

      jouplesier - 2011-03-31 05:02

kayza, this all happened in a day! the examples you are refering to are spread over YEARS man! look at your post, "2 years"! and just because news24 reports it often doesnt mean its a good thing at all! precisely the oppisite is true; and just because they reported it doesnt mean it was handled in timely manner at all! so, YOU stop with YOUR 'race excuses'

      Michael - 2011-03-31 05:08

      neekho - 2011-03-31 05:23

@Bob - The suspect and victims are all black, so not too sure what you are implying?

      RobCT - 2011-03-31 07:14

@ KayZA: You are the only one bringing up the race card pal. The statement was "If only farm murders were investigated this diligently". You are the racist here for automatically assuming that the farm murderers are of another race. Sis shame on you

      Zantsak - 2011-03-31 07:19

KayZa, I agree with what you say but need to point out that this man is hurting and as such why did the cops neglect the rape charge? This looks to me of revenge born out of frustration with the legal system. Why is there four rape suspects walking around?

      The Observer - 2011-03-31 07:25

      The Observer - 2011-03-31 07:30

      that is "oke" not oak.

      Wovenivy - 2011-03-31 08:08

@KayZa. The race nor identity of the suspect have been made public yet. Any speculation as to his identity is just that at the moment. Under the circumstances, Bob's comment is feasible & in no way refers to race. You're the one who's being defensive.

      Fred - 2011-03-31 10:13

@KAYZA, Actually Bob didn't mention race, coming from Umtata, the man could be white, black, coloured, Indian, chinese, any race actually, neither does the above article, the assumption you are making is just that, racist assumption. Bobs point is quite valid, but could be taken further, why is the rape of the mans daughter not been taken seriously? is it because the police do not think rape of a young girl is a serious matter?

  • Gazza - 2011-03-31 00:22

My guess, with googles help of course, Thando Manana.

      Sprokie - 2011-03-31 01:58

Nope, you are wrong boet!! This is a SHOCKER!!!!

      Grant - 2011-03-31 03:55

      So who is this oke?

      Grant - 2011-03-31 03:56

Dont think Thando played for the Barbarians either.

      Michael - 2011-03-31 05:07

Nope Gazza, Thando runs business in PE and lives there.

      ArtGee - 2011-03-31 08:12

SOrry for you mate.... this guy apprehended is CHARLES BRONSON!

  • Colin - 2011-03-31 01:12

Now the murder of suspected rapist come first & the rape case will be investigated much later !!!

      KayZa - 2011-03-31 01:39

Do you really know how the police system works? Did the daughter, father, open a rape case? And if they did that means that there is already an investigating officer assigned to the case. The guys who arrested the suspect were investigating "Murder", and their goal was to stop the random decapitation of people, by finding the murder and bringing him to book. Your already judging, let the cops do their work.

      U1 - 2011-03-31 04:58

kayza, if there was a caes and a case officer to investigate the rape, if there was one, how come then that the accused managed to find the rapists before the investigating officer could? Just asking....

      Afrikado - 2011-03-31 05:06

@U1 this angry father was attacking male pedestrians at night; not rapist!

      Bloodbane - 2011-03-31 07:59

@KayZa - I find it intersting that you take the high road and attack people for assuming things and yet you do the same.... you assume these where random decapitations...... do you know how thepolice system works? are you privie to information the rest arent? or are you just as guilty as the rest and should therefore really keep your over rated opinions to yourself!

      Regan - 2011-03-31 10:30

Someone buy this man a BELLS immediately

  • semurai - 2011-03-31 02:30

south africa got race problem, why kodwa? in this colum people cant wait to jump at each others' throughts based on race, are we being resonable everytime race this race that. maybe there must be an open dialogue in evety community about this. Hope Verwoed is smilling when his evil idiology of racism is still rife in our societies, I hate this man.

      Woseck - 2011-03-31 03:23

My father was a policeman for 38 years during the old and new regime. During the old days the police always found their man. No matter what race! Why can this man go out and find the right people to kill because his daughter got raped and the police can't find them? Straight forward, they don't know what they are doing! Look at the special units... entering the wrong premises!!! Shame on the South African protection service!!!

      Deepfreeze - 2011-03-31 07:14

Don't hate, rather wake up. There are racism all over the world, places that never heard of South Africa, let alone Verwoerd. I've been all over the world, France and Switzerland... racism, USA... HUGE racism, Middle East... racism, Nigeria... racism (I was held up in a bar there because of my race) it's everywhere semurai, and believe me, Verwoerd did not have such influences on the world. And it goes both ways.

      Bloodbane - 2011-03-31 08:06

@semurai - racism was around before verwoed and will be around as long as there are poeple on the planet. grow up! @Woseck - how do you know they where the right people. If they where I applaud what he did, but right now we have no way of knowing if he got the right people or not.... right now it's not even certain if there was a rape of his daughter... these are all just speculations that will need to be investigated.

      Umfubi - 2011-03-31 09:40

@woseck: I'm sure your father served his country and his people well. It is also good to see the loyalty you obviously feel for him. But do not kid yourself - even in the old days, there were thousands of murders where the perpetrators got away - most of them in the townships, unreported by the media of the time. Sad. VERY sad. But unfortunately true.

  • Herman - 2011-03-31 04:38

I recon that a person must rather than pointing fingers promote this man to Police chief and with this kind of action will have much less criminals on the street costing the tax payers money for people that can not be changed from their criminal ways. The fact is that if the public has to do the police work and assist the justice system by giving prper punishment for a crime, then it just shows that the South African public is tired of hearing promisses and will eventually take the law in to their own hands regardless of race.

  • Arend - 2011-03-31 05:03

Why do you call this man an ex-Blue Bull? Why not ex-Eagle. Is it because you want to disgrace the Blue Bulls?

      Shane - 2011-03-31 07:13

No Arend, the Blue Bulls disgrace themselves without any help from the media

      Bratt - 2011-03-31 09:40

probably just because the Blue Bulls are bigger than the Eagles, and would cause more of an attraction to the article. He doesn't have to be ex anything (well... considering his weapon of choice, maybe that's why they did that). He could have just been 'Dad'.

      willie werkie - 2011-03-31 11:05

It fits a trend: Joost van der Westhuizen, Pedrie Wannenburg, Bees Roux ...

  • Whoosa - 2011-03-31 05:24

KayZA, the way you responded to bobs post exactly shows us that you r a racist. Its like as if you r defending the police and justice system total lack of competancy. Farm murders each and every day, black on white, you hardly notice it anymore. And all that "Nutty" Mtetwha do is talk talk but no action, like ZOOma. These animals raped this guys daughter and the faaken police r to racialy biast to solve these cases. So hats off to this man for what he had done. What a pitty the 4th got away. I say, give that man a bells!!

      Mike - 2011-03-31 05:55

Yes give that man a bells & a nice new shiny axe so he can continue the good work of cleaning up the streets, if it were my daughter i would do the same thing regardless of colour,

      noitall - 2011-03-31 06:18

One thing is for sure. They wont be raping anyone again.

  • Casper - 2011-03-31 05:50

And I suppose you are ALL going to vote on the 18th of May.

      Bratt - 2011-03-31 10:08

I'm voting for all rugby players to be put on a watch list. Especially on Saturday afternoons.

  • CorneN - 2011-03-31 05:55

I love how being Christian is always supposed to make you better or more decent.

      Steve - 2011-03-31 06:44

Well spotted CorneN. I don't mean to offend anyone but for me, the fact that he is a Christian raises an immediate red flag!

      Nathan - 2011-03-31 09:41

@CorneN&Steve You both are as ignorant as the ANC :/

      Fat Rucker - 2011-03-31 10:58

Wow, Nathan. Is that the best you've got?

  • lanieke - 2011-03-31 06:45

      Errr... no.

  • Eldadv - 2011-03-31 07:15

A good man will kill rapists. I will kill someone if they gave my innocent daughter a death sentence.

  • dylanb4820 - 2011-03-31 07:57

Anyone who rapes my child will suffer a similar fate. Those stupid raping cowards are lucky it was a quick death by decap. Beware. For I will not have mercy on you. It will not be a quick death. A fair warning.

      Fat Rucker - 2011-03-31 08:35

You're so hard. We're all terribly impressed.

  • Thomas - 2011-03-31 08:02

He can be a joker and a good man but once someone does that to your daughter any man will snap. I do not agree with murder but if it is true and they did rape his daughter and infect her with HIV then I cannot say I would not do the same.

  • SuperM - 2011-03-31 08:07

I just think it's sad that he's daughter now not only has HIV, but she'll have to go through it without the support of her dad. Because he'll probably be in jail.

  • SuperM - 2011-03-31 08:09

i think it's sad that his daughter not only has HIV, but she won't have her father's support. Because he will be in jail.

      cynthiasteyn0 - 2011-03-31 08:56

Who cares????? He was and is a father! What has race got to do with it? Chop!

      Melly31 - 2011-03-31 09:09

I agree cynthiasteyn0 - This should not be about race... Who cares if he is white/black - the thing that matters is that HIS DAUGHTER WAS RAPED and he took justice into his own hands... I just hope he got the right guys!!!

      Jouma Semoer - 2011-03-31 09:24

      He was green.

      Bratt - 2011-03-31 09:43

      Chuck Norris is white.

  • Herman - 2011-03-31 08:14

  • Melly31 - 2011-03-31 09:04

It does not matter what race he his or his daughter is... If he got the guys who raped her then GOOD ON HIM... I feel for him and his daughter... BUT if he got the wrong guys then he must pay the price... I hope to God he did get the right men who did this to his daughter, seeing the that you cant trust the justice system in SA anymore... It does not matter what colour we are, this should not happen to anyone!!! We are all human!

  • Susan - 2011-03-31 09:31

It doesn't matter who he is, black/white - he deserves a medal! how many other parents would love to do the same? It's pointless relying on our justice system

  • GT - 2011-03-31 09:38

Seems like he played for three rugby teams, what's the media's obsession with the Blue Bulls ???

      Fat Rucker - 2011-03-31 10:16

Maybe it's because they have a history of scandals and are viewed as hypocritical, posturing christians by many. Off the top of my head: Henry Tromp Geo Cronje Joost van der Westhuisen Pedrie Wannenburg Bees Roux Deon Helberg

  • sonofagun - 2011-03-31 09:58

It is a pity that our system had changed a man of integrity into an axe-wielding murderer. One would think that these executions should be pretty traumatic for any executioner, especially one whom had been described as such outstanding member of society. The trauma that he and his family must endure because of the rape of his child had changed him into a vigilante of note. How many outstanding citizens would need to go this route before the death sentence will be re-instated? Unfortunately, this man cannot be pardoned, as he now cannot be declared mentally fit. Who knows…maybe the government could send him for trauma counseling as their incompetency had turned him into the animal he has become? @ Rat Fucker,Talmadge & Darwinian, or is it Darwinia? Religion is the foundation of civilization. The 10 commandments are the basis on which most civilizations laws are based. Why must you always turn such an article into a religious argument? You must have a chip on your shoulder.....were you perhaps raped or molested by a dominee? Your chip is similar to KayZa and my dear friend Paul Mandla Nkosi’s chips of racism.

      Talmadge - 2011-03-31 10:04

No sonofagun, you have to be in the Roman Catholic church to be raped or molested by a dominee. How is that for a religious example?

      Fat Rucker - 2011-03-31 10:54

No chips on either of my shoulders, sonofagun. Given the level of religious doctrine forced on readers in these comments sections, I think it's only fair thus us rational atheists are allowed to point out religious flaws and hypocrisy when appropriate. An boy, a murderous, axe-wielding christian 'nice guy' is something of a paradox, don't you think?

      sonofagun - 2011-03-31 12:38

@ Talmadge...That would be a priest, not a dominee, and religion has no place for argument in this article. No one said that he did it because he is a good Christian. It is known that he was a good Christian, meaning that he had a good sense of what the difference is between right and wrong. Something bad enough happened for him to lose his senses and values. @ Rat Fucker An boy? Read my comment to Talmadge. It should explain that you pointing out of flaws has a different platform. The only paradox is your type of comment in a wrong forum. By the way...there are quite a few dominees whom have placed themselves in the same category you would like to have labelled on only the Roman Catholic Church.

  • Tom - 2011-03-31 10:00

If this guy has sought revenge because his daughter was indeed gang raped, please advise bank account details so we can contribute to his legal fees. The incompetence of this corrupt government and police force knows no bounds. If this story pans out to be real i take my hat off to this guy for having the balls to do what we would all want to do if this happened to our daughters. I for one will gladly contribute to his legal fees! Kayza wake up you fool, the police are incompetent and corrupt and there is no justice for law abiding citizens in this country.

      Susan - 2011-03-31 10:28

      I agree & would gladly donate - 2011-03-31 10:39

The problem Tom is that he went on a random killing spree... if someone who fits your profile in terms of race, location commits a crime, should you take punishment for it? I would feel very different if he limited his 'revenge' to the alleged suspects, but it was not the case with our Bulls star

      Fat Rucker - 2011-03-31 11:02

Would you feel the same way if your innocent son had his head hacked off in a case of mistaken identity by a rapaging axe-murderer with principles?

      ignorance - 2011-03-31 11:12

@Tom ...A very wild statement to make, not knowing the true facts. To condone murder even for revenge purposes, is the same as actually committing the murders yourself. Ask your daughter, after she is raped, if she would like you to go out and murder the guy/s who raped her and spend the rest of your life in jail, or would she rather prefer you to be around her for the rest of her life, to support her in her time of need and to protect her from it ever happening again. Any act, performed with emotion, is an ignorant act, without foresight, logical judgment and becomes a useless act. However, should this "lost" father had acted with foresight, logical judgment and without emotion, he would have had the opportunity to kill all the rapists, not get caught and still be with his daughter today. Would you then not have known the reason for the axe murders and would rather set up a fund for the families of the "poor" men murdered by a deranged serial axe murderer ??????

  • Susan - 2011-03-31 10:37

KissTheBoer - I hope you will take back your 'bitchy' comment when the truth comes out. (try spell check, I presume you mean 'randomly')

"Sauls said the man is a Christian and a man of integrity." Does the Christian bible not teach forgiveness?

      GeheimeJames - 2011-03-31 11:37

Just because Malema read his woodwork handbook, doesn’t mean he passed the subject. Please stop being an idiot. Why are you still trying to justify your choice of being an atheist or whatever religion you chose???

  • Opinionated - 2011-03-31 11:21

I'm really not sure what the point is of even mentioning that he is an ex bulls player.... and not because bulls being put in a bad light now as i am a stormers supporter, but rather wonder if the aim is actually to hightlight that the player is potentially a big white afrikaans male? And if that is the reason for it then it is very sad because i am almost certain that any man, whose daughter was raped viciously as his daughter was, and sentenced to death by aids... Any man, black, white, chinese, coloured etc, would want to go out there and do what he did. What i do find to be more than useless, is that countrys justice system is so completely backwards, that a person would feel the need to take matters into their own hands because the law doesn't hold the people accountable as it should.

  • johnnews - 2011-03-31 11:48

What would drive a man to commit such crimes. It would be really sad if the men who apparently raped and infected his kids are allowed to walk freely in society. Would like to know more about that story. Would something like that drive me to murder seeing that our legal system allows murderers and rapists to walk free. Just throwing it out there for some comment.
