Cape Town - Former Cape Town ward councillor Thobile Qgola was sentenced to six years imprisonment by the Bellville Commercial Crimes Court on Thursday, the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) said.

This follows his conviction on three counts of fraud and six counts of corruption, regional spokesperson Eric Ntabazalila said in a statement.

"He faced five counts of fraud and seven counts of corruption but was acquitted on other counts after witnesses could not be traced."

Qgola promised residents they would receive government flats and houses if they paid him R7 000, provided him with copies of their identity documents and, occasionally, with the birth certificates of their children.

"He told [them] he was in a position to allocate or influence the allocation of houses or flats and if they paid him a deposit, they would receive their properties a few months later," said Ntabazalila.

"He would ask for a deposit of R3000 and then collect the remaining R4 000 later. He took the money from five people but never delivered the houses and flats as promised."

The NPA welcomed the sentence as it showed even public figures were not above the law.

"The NPA will continue to ensure that even those who are entrusted with improving the lives of others but engage in criminal activities will not escape the clutches of the law and will pay for their actions," Ntabazalila said.
