Tributes grow outside Mandela's home

2013-09-03 09:03

Normal activity has resumed at Pretoria's Heart Hospital after former President Nelson Mandela was discharged but tribute messages have now begun to grow outside his home in Houghton. Watch. WATCH

Johannesburg - The SA National Defence Force’s former surgeon general, Vejay Ramlakan, arrived at former president Nelson Mandela’s Houghton, Johannesburg, home on Tuesday.

Ramlakan was seen driving up to the main gate of the Houghton home. He was driven in and the gates quickly closed behind him.

Ramlakan was regularly seen arriving at the Medi-Clinic Heart Hospital in Pretoria during Mandela’s stay there.

Earlier in the day, President Jacob Zuma said the ailing Mandela was responding to treatment at home after being discharged from hospital at the weekend.

"You have heard that Tata Madiba left hospital for his home... He remains critical but stable, responding to treatment," Zuma told editors at a breakfast briefing in Pretoria.

"I think we feel very good... that he could leave hospital, which indicates the progress he has made.

"We acknowledge that he is old and that he is not well, but we are very happy that he has gone home."

On Sunday the presidency said Mandela had been discharged from the hospital where he had been treated since his 8 June admission with a lung infection.
