Expired pilchards cause painful death

2012-10-11 09:21

Cape Town - A Cape Town man died a painful death after eating from a can of expired pilchards.

The Daily Voice reported that the man was on a drinking binge with friends when they decided to share a can of pilchards, which they found at a dump near their Happy Valley home.

The expiry date showed that the contents of the can should not be eaten after 2005.

Flip “Billy” Blou, 41, was apparently too drunk to notice and died a few hours later, bleeding from the ears, mouth and nose.

His friend, Henry Fransman, was fighting for his life in hospital.

Drinking buddy Vuyani Goniwe said the day had started out pleasantly with the three of them contributing R10 towards a 5-litre bottle of Cape Best wine.

“We were all very drunk that day but the two of them were worse, they could not even walk,” said Vuyani.

“They were carried out in a wheelbarrow. We had been drinking together the whole day.”

Vuyani said his friends offered him some of the fish but he said no when he saw the expiry date.

An autopsy would be held to determine the cause of death.

      zimisele.stebisa - 2012-10-11 09:48

jst excuses how many ppl under bridges who eat these expired foods n still survives

      jonathan.dutoit2 - 2012-10-11 09:52

      yes, but they are robust

      TheDifference - 2012-10-11 10:02

WTF? They have money to get drunk, but not buy real food! Give to the poor they say...

      jonathan.dutoit2 - 2012-10-11 10:09

those people have different priorities, clearly food is at the bottom of the list.

      crackston.jack - 2012-10-12 07:19

How vrot these guys must have been to not pass out from the smell of 7+ year old fish let alone consume's wrong but I actually laughed. RIP

  • sanda.mnyazi - 2012-10-11 09:41

This is just sad :( and why didn't Vuyani stop them from eating it if he saw the expiry date

      andrez.kolesky - 2012-10-11 10:40

Very sad indeed. Vuyani knew the circumstances and may have been stabbed to death in the process.

      rodney.bevan.58 - 2012-10-11 13:26

The title is wrong, as far as I know, ALL fish in a tin have expired.

      adriaan.delange.94 - 2012-10-12 03:47

Yes very sad. Why is this products not remove as yet. I can believe that the normal man on the street will keep tin foods from 2005. This was sold by sombody who must be charged for murder. The alcohol has got nothing to do with the expire date 2005. 7 years stored and now somebody found it. Not even the ritch can keep foods for 7 years.

  • brionyl.french - 2012-10-11 09:42

Instead of getting drunk and eatng garbage they should be trying to find work and still being an example to young. but the bottom of the bottle is better it seems and eating other peoples trash.

      gerald.mphuthi - 2012-10-11 09:52

Well we don't know their situation to be judgemental but believe you me finding a job is not as easy as you may think, when you have knocked on a thousand doors without any success part of you says give up... I thought you would have said instead that they could have used their R10s to buy bread and chips for the three of them and only later think about booze...

      kala.bafazi - 2012-10-11 10:02

I agree Gerald. There's something very Darwinian about this story. A bit less of the stupid gene in the human race.

      rodney.louis.7 - 2012-10-11 12:15

Frenchie my ignorant friend these ppl are used to eating from the rubbish dump , Unfortunately canned fish that exspires, carry the deadly salmonella virus

      rodney.louis.7 - 2012-10-11 12:19

Unfortunately for the poorest of the poor , the rubbish dump is a reality they battle to get away from

      arne.verhoef - 2012-10-11 18:05

Rodney, what an outrageous statement 'Unfortunately canned fish that exspires, carry the deadly salmonella virus'.Firstly, Salmonella is a bacteria, secondly, it doesnt just spontaneously develop. If I were to venture any guess, it would be Clostridium botulinum, causing botulism poisoning, and often associated with canned good. The toxin produced by this bacteria is also one of the most powerful toxins known to man[and used in Botox]. This is just a guess, as a can thats been expired for 7 years, and found on a rubbish dump can carry a whole host of other pathogens. May he rest in peace.

      louis.j.roux.7 - 2012-10-12 09:15

rodney.louis.7 You try to be a smart ass - salmonella has never been, is not, and will never be a VIRUS.

      jay.kganyago.5 - 2012-10-11 20:40

@Andrea R6.89 for 700g bread. Sliced. R30 would have bought four loaves.

  • mrtinyiko.matsambu - 2012-10-11 18:40

A lots of this cheap Cape wines are extremely toxic, and a health hazard. It is time for Dept of Health to intervine and save our poor brothers from this slow poison. An expired fish in a can/tin, which is less than 410 grams cannot cause death, ask me i ate a lot during apartheid.
