Johannesburg - A bag containing explosives and detonators was seized by police in Springs near the Everest Informal settlement on Tuesday, Ekurhuleni metro police said.

Chief Superintendent Wilfred Kgasago said a bag containing 20 plastic cartridge explosives and 23 copper fuse detonators was confiscated.

Kgasago said about 12 men dropped the bag and fled when they saw a metro police vehicle approach them.

No one was arrested, as the men managed to flee from the police.

Authorities were investigating whether the group was involved in illegal mining in the nearby disused mine or involved in any ATM bombings.
