Johannesburg - Unemployment insurance fund benefits affecting domestic workers should be extended, Labour Minister Mildred Oliphant said in Cape Town on Saturday.

"We need systems that will ensure that workers in this sector are no longer abused," she said in a speech prepared for delivery.

Oliphant was speaking to domestic workers attending a public participation programme at a stadium in Khayelitsha.

She said various proposals around amending the UIF Act were on the cards.

One of the proposals was that workers like domestic workers would receive UIF benefits for a year instead of six months.

She also said that more categories of workers should be included in the UIF scheme.

Oliphant told domestic workers that they must attend the department's review of legislation relating to their sector.

"If you don't make it your business to come to the hearings, employers push their viewpoint and you are left behind."

She said the UIF would also train 1000 retrenched domestic employees.

A total of 646 578 domestic employers and 657 908 domestic employees are registered for UIF.

Oliphant also raised the possibility of reviewing the compensation for occupational injuries and diseases act in order to ensure domestic workers were protected by it.
