Johannesburg - A Free State man was stabbed to death, allegedly by a group of robbers, in Bloemfontein on Saturday morning, police said.

Spokesperson Chaka Marope said the 19-year-old man and his friend were walking from a tavern to a taxi rank early on Saturday morning when the group tried to steal their wallets and cellphones.

The man apparently tried to fight back and was stabbed in his right arm and leg.

"It is reported that due to severe bleeding he [only] managed to walk a few metres and he collapsed and died.

The man's friend managed to run away and alert nearby police on patrol.

Police were still searching for the group.
