Cape Town - A Cape Town city councillor has been given until next Friday to respond to a formal complaint lodged after he allegedly put his hands around the throat of another councillor during a council meeting earlier this week, the speaker’s office has confirmed.

On Wednesday, Freedom Front Plus (FF+) councillor Andre Fourie briefly placed his hands in a loose throttling position around Democratic Alliance (DA) councillor Belinda Walker’s throat.

He then walked back to his seat amid shouts and some councillors confronting him.

It was unclear what the circumstances behind the interaction were.

Speaker Dirk Smit confirmed he had received a formal complaint against Fourie, which had been forwarded to him for a response.

"Once this has been received, I will apply my mind and make an informed decision according to this response," he said.

Fourie declined to comment, saying there "was an incident and I will deal with it".

Walker could not be reached for comment.
