Johannesburg - A teenager was injured when a large cracker exploded in his hand in Bloemfontein on Wednesday, paramedics said.

"It is understood that the boy picked up the firework and ignited it. It exploded in his hand leaving him with multiple fractures and open wounds," said ER24 spokesperson Chitra Bodasing.

He lost the tips of two of his fingers during the explosion.

The 14-year-old was taken to hospital for treatment.
