FS woman fights off vicious attacker

2012-11-21 09:39

Bloemfontein - A Free State mom fought back as a robber repeatedly stabbed her with a broken bottle, thinking of her young children and how she wanted to give her son a hug on his third birthday.

“I just had to fight back. I just knew I didn’t want my husband and children to come back later that afternoon to a bloodbath. My children are just too small,” Nadia Gibbens, 31, told Volksblad.

Gibbens was stabbed repeatedly with a broken bottle on their smallholding in Bainsvlei in Bloemfontein.

Her son Greg turned 3 on Tuesday. She also had a 1-year-old daughter called Charlotte.

The suspect fled with money and Gibbens pushed the panic button. Police found the suspect in the area as he was buying a cooldrink, presumably with the money he had stolen.

Gibbens had to undergo a lengthy operation to stitch up the many stab wounds she had sustained to her back, head and shoulder.

This happened when the robber broke a large glass cooldrink bottle on her head and attacked her with it.

Police said the suspect had seen the back door open and saw Gibbens’s husband and children leave the property.

Quentin Gibbens praised police for their quick action and his wife for her tough attitude.

“I can’t describe how helpless I felt on the way home. But she’s a real fighter. A real tough cookie,” he said on Wednesday.

YOU GO GIRL!!!! I hope I would have the same courage to do what you did if the moment ever arose!

      jack.blacking.56 - 2012-11-21 10:18

Imagine a country without these folks, South Africa still doesn't know the true meaning of being free.

      james.bondiski - 2012-11-21 10:18

      BRING BACK THE DEATH PENALTY!!!!!!!

      luther.kingsley.5 - 2012-11-21 10:34

I fear this happening to my family as well, but when will people realize they are in South Africa where more than 15,000 murders are committed every year... SA criminals are the MOST brutal in the world... Please people remain EXTRA vigilant at ALL times, you cannot leave doors and windows open, or not have armed response and live as if its never going to happen to you... arm yourselves and get training.

      jomar.delange - 2012-11-21 10:46

@Dumbwin --- everyone is angry in South Africa.

      michael.horton.566790 - 2012-11-21 10:51

Time to arm yourselves people!!! Men and woman of all ages!!! Shoot on site and ask questions later! The government should pass a law protecting the minority and allowing them to shoot any trespassers on their property which they feel threatened by!

      charlesdumbwin.dumbwin - 2012-11-21 11:01

Micheal you can do that already. As long as the shot intruders have threatening weapons in their hands, it's aaaaaaaaall good (wink wink)

      rbphiri - 2012-11-21 12:05

And then we get someone dauchebag who says small time criminals deserve remission of sentence. Small crimes are like throwing a stone in the pond...the ripple effect inevitably becomes bigger.

      pierre.pretorius.370 - 2012-11-21 14:03

Find them. Hang them. I blame no one else but the ANC.

  • mark.klerk.7 - 2012-11-21 10:11

Look, i am no rocket scientist, but it doesnt take a rocket scientist to figure out that buying a drink down the road from someone you just tried to rob and kill is not the best idea. This criminal is bright enough to be our president. Glad she is ok though

  • rudi.wet.5 - 2012-11-21 11:03

We just bought property around the corner from where this took place. The shop where this idiot bought the colddrink is 100m away from our new house. The police station is less than 50m away from this shop. Where has this country gone if you can attack someone in their home on the doorstep of the SAPS?

      marinda.hibberspretorius - 2012-11-21 15:17

Simply because the police don`t care, it is well known that some of them also attack helpless people, so what do you expect

  • charlene.patel.7 - 2012-11-21 11:07

What a story! Bless this woman. She certainly put up a commendable fight. I urge anyone reading this story, whether you have also been a victim of attack or whether you would just be interested in knowing how to handle such a situation, to go look at the Victim Support Network. • colin.hayward.10 - 2012-11-21 12:27

who breads these savages? why are they not taught right from wrong? they seem to have no regard for the law and no remorse for what is left in their wake. some one needs to be accountable and do something about this type of behavior taking place across out country. which one of you politicans has the balls to deal with it? ill vote for you.

      bob.mcmillen.564 - 2012-11-21 12:50

colin, she is called Helen Zille and her party is the DA, we only have to suffer maximum one more term under these clowns, relief is on it's way.

  • frederick.nel - 2012-11-21 12:52

Some idiot admin is deleting comments again. This story made me so angry. I feel for this woman and glad she survived but this shouldn't of happened in the first place. The guy that attacked her knew she had a family with kids but he simply did not care if these kids go with out a mother. We cant rely on the law anymore to protect us anymore and this is unacceptable. 30 years ago we could sleep with our doors wide open and key left in the cars ignition while we run into the shop. This country has been degraded to a point where our prisons are full and we have lousy government that cant keep things in control. People keep a weapon of some sort in your house to protect your selves and fight back at these guys.

  • Brendon Lotter - 2012-11-21 13:01

Wow! I take my hat off to her! Its about time we fought back... Enough is enough and it is quite clear that you aren't safe anywhere, not even your own home! We have to live like prisoners in our homes to be safe, but the criminals roam freely and carefree! Our judicial system is as pathetic as the government!

  • angela.nair.3 - 2012-11-21 13:12

You Brave brave woman - what is life worth to the thieving bastards - nothing - we hold our lives in our hands daily - we struggle against corruption, murder, rape, granny rapes in particular - South Africa - Rape and Crime capital of the world - please can we have the death penalty back? • piet.snot.77964 - 2012-11-21 20:27

michael.horton.566790 - We read so many of these instances these days that it almost expected that you will be harmed so maximum force will be needed to repel any attack/invasion. I therefore think that statistics will assist you here - the probability that you or your family will be attacked and injured or worse -killed by some uninvited person who has invaded your home is rising every day. Today the chances that such persons mean to harm allows one to take the necessary action to defend yourself with all means available - even if it means killing the intruder.
