'Facebook rapist' case on hold

Cape Town - The plea and sentencing of "Facebook rapist" Thabo Bester was postponed in the Western Cape High Court on Wednesday.

Judge Andre le Grange agreed to resume proceedings on Thursday as there was a discrepancy between Bester's previous sentence on police records and a correctional services form.

The State would need to establish what the correct sentence was before it could proceed with the new matter.

Bester stands accused of murdering 26-year-old model Nomfundu Tyulu in Milnerton, Cape Town, in September last year.

She was found stabbed in the chest in a bed and breakfast room.

He was sentenced to 50 year's imprisonment by a Durban court in October for raping and robbing two models.

He was handed down 15 years for each count of rape as well as 15 years for each count of robbery.

Five years were suspended for each robbery.

While the sentence was correct on a correctional services form, the police record stated he was serving a 30-year jail term.

A Durban Magistrate's Court clerk would have to issue a certificate with the correct sentence before the Western Cape High Court could proceed.

Bester was dubbed the "Facebook rapist" because he used the website to get women to meet him.

He sent them messages that international modelling scouts were interested in them and then met them in person.

Armed with a knife, he then raped and robbed them.
