Johannesburg - A worker was critically injured when a furnace exploded at a Germiston factory early on Tuesday morning, Gauteng paramedics said.

It was believed the blast was caused by "an item or substance that was placed in the furnace", Netcare911 spokesperson Jeffrey Wicks said.

Paramedics found the man had been seriously burned on his face, chest and arms.

"Small shards of metal from the explosion also struck the man in the face," Wicks said.

He was stabilised and taken to the Netcare Union Hospital.

The department of labour would investigate the accident.
