Fake hijack dad turns up in CT hospital

2012-10-23 08:40

Cape Town - A man who disappeared shortly before police planned to arrest him because of a false hijacking claim in Durban two weeks ago, has been found in a Cape Town hospital, Beeld reported on Tuesday.

Police spokesperson Captain Thulani Zwane told Beeld that Leon van Rensburg, 52, an IT specialist from New Germany, would be arrested in hospital and transported back to Durban.

The father of four first disappeared for about 60 hours two weeks ago, after he sent an SMS saying "Help, hijacked" to his daughter Megan, 15.

Last Wednesday, police were on the verge of arresting Van Rensburg for perjury when he disappeared again.

His family said last week they feared he would commit suicide, as his car had been found abandoned in the parking area of a Durban conference centre with a note inside.

Zwane said police investigators called Van Rensburg's wife on Monday to find out if she had heard from her husband, at which point she told them he had been admitted to a Cape Town hospital.

He said police were considering claiming back from Van Rensburg all expenses incurred during the search two weeks ago.

so this wife knew the husband was in hospital and had to wait till she was called by police to tell them that?? why is she not in capetown right now with her husband?? this is one weird family , something out of Muvhango, 7 de laan

Do not judge... you have no facts, you judging from a News24 article.. don't. Desperate people do desperate things, he has obviously got to a point of no return and is sheer desperation he has gone and done a really dof thing, just leave him alone, he is in enough trouble. Just walk away and get on with your own life.

      sanchez.sancho.7 - 2012-10-23 09:11

Uhmmmm point blank, i dont know this family and therefore, everything i know is from news24, if im right, this is news24, its not like you found this comment on facebook. so dont tell me not to base my story from news24 because thats where im following this story, which gives me every right to cemment on the story based on what news24 tells us, do you know something that we dont??

      manny.dasilva.902 - 2012-10-23 09:16

Days of our lives - a Stefano at play here, lol

      john.kirkwood.9619 - 2012-10-23 09:22

i sort of agree with point blank, this guy has not killed, raped ,robbed anyone based on news 24 the people he has hurt are friends and family, why nobody knows and as far as i am concerned its non of our bussiness, what is our bussines is the waste of sap time and money (which i think they do enough of by themselves)so if they want to charge him and claim the money back fair enough no need to make this mans situation more desperate by throwing him in jail, open, a case go and see the guy and i am sure he will make an arrangment to refund the money and set the story straight.

I agree with PointBlank but that doesn't mean Sanchez is wrong. This IS a werid story but yes, the poor amn obviously has some serious problems. My Gran alwyas said we should walk a mile in anothers shoes and she was right. We don't know what is going on in his life.

      gift.mushi.9 - 2012-10-23 09:37

@ Sanchez Sancho Please give us (refer us to) one Scenario / Scene in Muvhango similar to these rubbish.......

      Mike.ntsh2009 - 2012-10-23 10:08

@PointBlank don't play smarty! You always judge based on facts posted on N24. If there is a story reading "Zuma's home is being rebuild for R250m" you were definitely going to judge based on scanty information from N24.

      delish7564 - 2012-10-23 11:49

@zambezi. Wonder how you or your family would feel if they saw a comment from someone who didn't know you, saying the same thing about you? Very cruel and uncalled for. I agree with others, he hasn't killed or raped anyone, it's his family who have been hurt and your comment makes it worse.

      richard.hipkin - 2012-10-23 11:56

@Mike, I have grown up and realised only sad people sit on News24 and judge others. I have moved on from that. Find inner peace Mike, News24 will kill you.

      BulletProof. - 2012-10-23 21:07

Why he should be in jail when they don't arrest all the killers that are in the loose? Perhaps is having psychologic problems. Who knows? Who are we to judge withouth the facts?

@pointblank - Agree with you to a point. i dont care what you are going through, you DO NOT send a text like that to your 15 year old kid, no matter what your personal issue is. as far as im concered this oke is just another sicko. but yeah, dont beleive everything on this news sight as sensationalism is rife!

  • hudayfah.newman - 2012-10-23 08:56

Must have picked up the same bug those politicians picks up when they are destined for jail.

      nsda29 - 2012-10-23 09:41

LOL @Inhlanzi!!! Mandiana for once why cant we exclude race. White people that black people that. Instead of focusing on actions of one human being a race card will suddenly emerge. This is supposed to be a New SA, A rainbow nation and it starts with 1 person. We will never see a difference in our country if the stereotype doesn't stop.

  • sandy.langenstrass - 2012-10-23 08:57

As I pointed out in a previous comment...this guy has issues(mental)....life don't forget, has become extremely difficult....and to that marriage problems, sure he just couldn't take anymore. I have often wanted to just leave, when life became overwhelming, but lucky for me, I'm rather a strong person...but not everyone is.

      sandy.langenstrass - 2012-10-24 10:18

For those who have given thumbs down on my comment....all I can say to you is....."I hope for your sake that you never encounter difficult times in your life....but not many of us escape bad patches along the path of life" I hope when you do....that you remember how insensitive you were to understanding this man's problem. Maybe you might even do something far more bizarre than he has done....then you will look for people to try to understand.

  • fran.aphane - 2012-10-23 09:07

I did say I smelt something last week and I was right. Wait for more, poor guy. Why did you do that for man? How will you pay for the police bill now?

  • deon.louw.7505 - 2012-10-23 09:21

He must be a dangerous criminal? It sounds more like he is mentally unstable and if he was not depressed before he surely is now. Maybe he should become a polititian now, lying is second nature to some of them.

  • althea.meintjies - 2012-10-23 09:26

Everybody is asking the wrong questions, what needs to be asked is: 1. Why is he in hospital? is he injured or is he in a mental hospital 2. What is the motive behind his weird actions 3. Why is his wife not supporting him or going to fetch him from hospital 4. Why would you abandon your car, and how did he end up in Capetown My feeling is that this man has mental issues, maybe he just snapped. We are all human and there are times when we all feel like just AWOL ... give the man a break would you!

      delish7564 - 2012-10-23 11:58

Asivhanga, I hardly think you can call some people in jail human, their actions most certainly are not humane. It is an insult to the rest of us who abide by the law. I agree though with your sentiment about paying, however, in this case I think he has already paid a price in one way or another and no doubt will continue to do so for a very long time

      somikazi.pita - 2012-10-23 14:10

      WOW! Now he's the victim?!

      beverly.pearce.33 - 2012-10-23 15:22

I am inclined to agree with you nd he is already paying price for his actions , will continue pay for some time hope he nd family sort things out.

  • malcolm.naidoo.12 - 2012-10-23 09:46

lol... some of these comments are ridiculous... because he is a white man, we now need to ask so many "questions" - like what is the 'real' reason he is in hospital... we all know that if he was not white, you very same people will crucify him. how sad for you!!! The guy is a criminal. he was a criminal before he claimed to be hijacked (the police were already looking for him), he was a criminal when he faked his own hijacking (and put his family {especially his daughter} through such trauma... and now he is running away from the cops again... He is a criminal... Justice should take its course... all you racist ppl should just chill

  • siphom.mnguni - 2012-10-23 10:29

I must confess I never took this story seriously at first, but now I must admit that I've completely changed my mind. It's true I don't know that family, neither do I know their going on. But there is more than meets an eye. If I was living in a perfect world- which I do not- I would suggest the nation rally in support of the man. Maybe something like friends of Leon or a bank account opened in his name. I wouldn't mind contributing sizeable. I am not looking for any sympathy for myself but I have once been through hell myself. I lost all my family members and I was left alone. At that time I hated life and everything it stands for. Yes I regrouped and discovered a new meaning to life. I sometimes joke that I am an 'endangered species'. I don't know what Leon is going through but I have a feeling it is too deep. Deeper than we can imagine.

  • reginald.dube - 2012-10-24 09:59

oooohhhhh now we don't judge anymore. he stole from tax payers, who pays the police who were looking for him? BUT don't judge right? lets try and be understanding, his family might be hurt with what we write on news24.hhhhhhhhmmmmmmmm might it because he is a van Rensburg?

      zimbobwe.mugabe - 2012-10-24 13:03

Yes reginald it's because it's a van rensburg. Anyway our opinions means nothing the court of law will judge but he must go to jail. I think his wife should go to jail as well for misleading the police and the public. She knew all along why this man left the house but she pleaded innocent and painted this criminal a saint. She knew the husband was in hospital but didn't inform the police.

  • irma.white.9 - 2012-10-24 10:31

No sympathy. Unless he is mentally disturbed, then there was no reason for him to do what he did. To put his family through so much stress, to cause such a riot with the police... as a grown man, he should have known better and just opened his mouth. To those who say "don't judge" sure enough BUT to go through such extremes is really not cool. I know what I am talking about personally, my mother had severe depression and a nervous breakdown such that she had to be hospitalised, but she never pulled any tricks like this.
