Families break down at Marikana inquiry

2012-10-23 13:10

Rustenburg - Two women broke down in tears and had to be consoled on Tuesday when the Farlam Commission heard how two security guards were hacked to death.

The commission was told that the security guards' families wanted to give evidence at the inquiry.

It is tasked with establishing the cause of a shooting in which 34 striking Lonmin workers died and 78 were wounded when police opened fire while trying to disperse a group encamped on a hill in Nkaneng on August 16.

The workers had been carrying knobkerries, pangas, sticks and iron rods.

Workers at the mine went on strike on August 10, demanding a monthly salary of R12 500. Within four days, 10 people had been killed, two of them policemen and two of them security guards.

Family members of those killed sat in the first two rows of the auditorium at the Rustenburg Civic Centre, where the commission, chaired by retired judge Ian Farlam, is holding hearings.

One thing is for sure,History will vindicate the miners, Ramaphosa and cronies wil have to account for all this mess,

      danie.strydom.7 - 2012-10-23 13:32

LOL, sure. Same as rest of Africa. Will history vindicate Mugabe. Or Idi Amin as well? The miners were shot because they were mixing with others that had guns and shot at the police. Stupid. Darwin Awards for all.

nothing can validate the actions of the striking miners that caused the death of 10 people ie. two security guards, two policemen and six miners, versus the 34 miners that died. The striking miners showed a blatant disregard and value for life itself, moral values. Blame who u want , but no one deserved to die, and all those miners that live today, should be ashamed of their actions.

Generalization is an indication of stupidity, when a few unruly people in the crowd misbehave doesn't mean the entire crowd deserves to be shot, more that 40% of the miners shot in Marikana were shot in the back, a clear indication that they were avoiding a confrontation.

It is just as well that you don't write history books.

      ianmichaelcalder - 2012-10-23 13:56

No idiot, a clear indication of avoiding the conflict WOULD BE TO NOT BE THERE. What happened is that they suddenly realized that they were outgunned. How many of the miners that stayed at home were killed. None. Not one. Pretending that there were people here that were somehow forced into being shot by proximity alone is simply ridiculous.

@Tumisang they were part of the violent strike just because they were shot in the back doesn't mean they weren't charging at the police with the intent of hurting them. They just brought pangas to a gun fight which is not the smartest move!! If these miners get their way it will be great injustice!! They shouldbe the ones on trial!

How sad. These are the real victims here. Security guards doing their jobs, looking after their families. hacked to death my a murdering tribe of illegal striking idiots. Call off the inquiry and give the money to the security officers families, and those of the police men killed by these miners before they were brought into line. What a waste of money to figure out some of the miners shot at the police, and then they got some return fire. The MUTI didn't work, it never does. JUSTICE for real victims, not NUMTY idiots striking for a ''living wage''.

Um, they were also armed with spears, knives and firearms.

      bob.mcmillen.564 - 2012-10-23 13:46

Exactly sean, and thats why they were shot, no enquiry needed.
