Families gather for Jub Jub sentencing

2012-12-05 10:35

Johannesburg - Family members of the schoolchildren killed and injured in the car crash involving musician Molemo Jub Jub Maarohanye were in court as his sentencing got under way on Wednesday morning.

Courtroom six of the Protea Magistrate's Court in Soweto began filling up ahead of the sentencing of Maarohanye and co-accused Themba Tshabalala.

Family members were seen wearing white golf T-shirts with the names of the children involved in the crash.

Guilty

On October 16, the court found Maarohanye and Tshabalala guilty on four counts of murder and two of attempted murder, using drugs, racing on a public road, and driving under the influence of drugs.

They were drag-racing in Protea North on March 8, 2010 when they crashed into a group of schoolboys.

Prince Mohube, Mlungisi Cwayi, Andile Mthombeni, and Phomello Masemola, were killed. Frank Mlambo and Fumani Mushwana were left permanently brain damaged.

Maarohanye and Tshabalala were denied bail after judgment was handed down.

Maarohanye approached the South Gauteng High Court on 7 November against the decision to have his bail revoked. The court ruled against the musician.

On Friday, attorney Rudi Krause, for Maarohanye, applied for a postponement, saying he was recently appointed and did not have enough time to prepare his pre-sentencing report.

I hope that they put him and his co accused away for a long long time. In that they lied and lied then blaming each other and showed absolutely no remorse. Jub Jub believed because he was a celebrity he could get away with it. Jub Jub whilst you sitting behind bars enjoying your xmas lunch, a thought for those families of the dead children, just think how they are feeling.

@Patricism- Taking drugs and driving at insane speeds in densely populated residential area cannot just "happen to anyone". Where's the sense of taking responsibility and being remorseful? Is that what you do in Jupiter?
