Johannesburg - Six family members died in a head-on collision on the N2 in Honey Farm, outside eMpangeni, the KwaZulu-Natal transport department said on Sunday.

"According to the preliminary report, a truck had a tyre burst, lost control and collided with an on-coming VW Jetta light passenger car," spokesperson Kwanele Ncalane said in a statement.

All six occupants in the Jetta, believed to be from one family, died on the scene.

Transport MEC Willies Mchunu called on all motorists to drive cautiously on the road.

"We would like to again urge road users to be extra cautious, ensure their vehicles are roadworthy, and strictly adhere to road traffic rules," he said.

Mchunu said the department would intensify law enforcement operations which started during October.

He said they would be increased as the festive season draws closer.
