Family terrified by snake in car

2012-12-11 11:23

Pietermaritzburg - A 13-year-old has vowed never to get into her mother’s car again, after a snake fell onto her feet while they were reversing out of their driveway on Saturday.

Megan Volsum told The Witness she was sitting comfortably in the front passenger seat of their VW Polo next to her mum, Glenda, who was driving, and with her cousin, Sheila, 16, sitting at the back.

Glenda was reversing out when Megan saw a snake rolling out of the dashboard. It landed on her foot.

“At first, I thought it was a rubber snake and that someone was joking around.”

But it was no joke.

'Cold and scaly'

She said the snake felt “cold” and “scaly”.

“I jumped to the back and dived out of the car,” she said.

Then everyone started screaming.

She said it was black and grey, and had reddish eyes. “I’ll never get in the car again. I’m dead serious.”

She said she was shaken by the incident.

Glenda, 47, said the whole thing happened in a split second.

With no time to stop the car, she also jumped out of the car, which rolled a little way before she managed to pull up the handbrake.

“It was quite traumatic. I’m now petrified to get in the car,” she said.

However, she said she was glad that it didn’t happen on the road while she was driving.

Sheila said she was also traumatised.

“The car wouldn’t stop. My door wouldn’t open, so I had to jump onto the other side.”

Sheila only saw the snake when they were all out of the car.

“I ran inside [the house]. I closed the door just in case it came after me.”

She said everyone started getting hysterical, even those who were inside the house and hadn’t seen the snake.

“I think the snake was after me,” Sheila joked.

No sign has been found of the slithery car invader, despite extensive searches of the car. The car is back on the road now.

It almost sounds like a Schuster's prank.

      stirrer.stirrer - 2012-12-11 14:08

I think Glenda's maiden name was Kemp, and that was Oupa or one of his offspring in the car. (Only over-50's will know what I'm talking about ;-) - 2012-12-12 10:43

The article does not say what they smoked BEFORE they got into the car ... lol What happened to the snake? Maybe its sleeping under the seat now .... I think I should offer to buy that car for like R1000 I am sure they ready to sell it ...

    Never gets old. haha

  • Jane - 2012-12-11 11:48

"She ran inside the house and closed the door just in case it was after her"? I have never ever seen a snake chase anyone. Seriously? "The people inside the house who hadn't even seen the snake became hysterical". One would think it was a rabid dog or a bear chasing them. Talk about a dramatic family.

      Mandiana - 2012-12-11 13:28

      Snakes do chase people.

      pieter.swanepoel.5602 - 2012-12-12 09:46

@Mandiana - ........and magic powder makes you bullet proof!!!

      tamaryn.munro - 2012-12-12 11:22

*sighs* While I do agree with you on the dramatics of the family, I have had a snake slither past me while in my childs' seat (I was 4) as my Dad's cornsnake had gotten free, so I completely empathize. There were no venomous snakes in the car, and was the ONLY time a snake escaped him in 50yrs experience. And yes, have a look at researching the mamba (both varieties) for example, as they have been known to be very aggressive in their territory and KNOWN to chase humans/et al. (I have grown up with snakes my entire life, my Dad was known to our local cops as a snake catcher and registered with Parks' Board etc, I was educated with their care and taught respect for them as a wild creature.) You guys also need to take shock/surprise/adrenalin into account too.

      briana.scott - 2012-12-12 11:23

Apparently the black mamba chases people. I am not sure... never seen it myself.

      johan.fou - 2012-12-12 12:12

I was chased by a Black Mamba on a farm about 10km outside of Empangeni, about 9 years ago. He came up hissing about 5 meters from me, and I retreated. He went down, sailed toward me and came up again. This time I ran about 25 meters, and when I looked up he was still coming toward me, lifting his head very aggressively every few meters. He wasn't nearly fast enough to catch me, but he wouldn't stop coming. I was shocked as I had had many encounters with Black Mambas before, but it was the first time ever that I got chased by one! I then just started running. About 5km further down the road, I stopped and called my dad. I don't know how far he chased me, but it couldn't have been long. (Maybe 50 meters or so at max.) Still, I didn't stop to check for another 5km. LOL

      brendan.naiker - 2013-02-23 15:48

Some snakes do chase you. I know what Justin's talking about, I also had a Mamba chase me when I was young. We had hit our soccer ball into our neighbours yard and it must've either hit it or disturbed it from where it was resting. Anyway I went to jump over my neighbours fence to pick up the ball, next minute I see this snake coming after me. I turned and hightailed it out of there - probably the fastest I have ever ran. Lucky there was a wall between him and I and I managed to jump over and escape.

not really news worthy material, but had to have a little chuckle about it at the same time, although i doubt i would laugh about it if it had to happen to me. freak out!!!!

  • richard.zanner - 2012-12-11 12:08

NEws 24 seem to have a slump in anything to report.

      herman.bester.58 - 2012-12-12 09:40

So Richard, what brilliant story would you have come up with if you were given the chance?

  • eyesears.handsfeet - 2012-12-11 12:08

Shame Megan. Hope you and the rest of the family are feeling better. I also don't like creepy crawlies so you’re not alone. Just glad nothing too serious happened. It could have had disastrous results. As for this piece making news. I think it is good to get people to watch for anything strange in their cars before they get in. Just as a precautionary measure. No harm done.

  • nhlapop - 2012-12-11 12:11
