Farm attack victim fighting for her life

2012-06-21 09:37

Johannesburg - A 65-year-old woman who was shot three times in a farm attack in which her husband was killed, is fighting for her life in a Polokwane hospital.

Beeld reported that doctors said Gloudien van Rensburg would probably be paralysed if she survived.

She was shot as she lay sleeping next to her husband, Johan van Rensburg, 77, on their game farm Cosmopolite near the Botswana border.

Her husband was shot dead by the four men who cut the electric fence and bent back burglar bars in the bathroom to get into the house.

The couple were attacked early on Wednesday morning.  American tourists, who had come to hunt on the farm, were woken up by the shots and raised the alarm.

The Americans were apparently too shocked to talk to reporters.

Firearms were stolen from the house but the couple’s cellphones had not been taken.

They celebrated their 43rd wedding anniversary in January.

Enough of these murders and rapes in south Africa. :(

      gideon.joubert.10 - 2012-06-21 10:06

It is going to come down to us, as citizens, to fight crime ourselves. Our police have over 27000 officers that are not even remotely compitent enough to handle a firearm safely. How must they protect us? How are they supposed to solve a crime? It is time that we are granted more power and more freedom.

      Anita - 2012-06-21 11:21

Gideon you are so right! The last people I would call if I had a problem would be the police!

      Oom - 2012-06-22 16:31

I feel so very sorry for this family, and all the others. These are farm murders, not robberies..!! They are planned and there is a purpose beyond simple theft. I read the comments made by the farmers son ( Not sure if was son..) and it was war talk. Every comment was loaded and ready to explode. I think that it is just a matter of time before the fuse burns down, and the bomb goes off. There are far too many killings on our farms. The farmers are “GAT VOL”..we are gat vol, and I am afraid that unless the government put their foot down and protect them, they will start protecting themselves..and that will be the beginning of the end for South Africa..Think very carefully about what could happen next.

      denise.ryan.5203 - 2012-06-22 20:54

War is an ugly thing, but not the ugliest of things. The decayed and degraded state of moral and patriotic feeling which thinks that nothing is worth war is much worse. The person who has nothing for which he is willing to fight, nothing which is more important than his own personal safety, is a miserable creature and has no chance of being free unless made and kept so by the exertions of better men than himself...

      downwiththeANC - 2012-06-22 23:20

the ANSWER to all our problems is that we need : A CHANGE OF GOVERNMENT. The ANC must go. They must go , the sooner the better.

      ruan.nielsen.3 - 2012-06-23 08:53

Kimola from the ancyl has this blood on his hands,he is inspiring to commit and provoke war, when an uneducated youth looks at its leaders words and sees war,he will react without a doubt,,these sublte but yet very effective words were used in Rwanda and Sierra leonne to the youth and look what happened there,What the Afri forum and DA do not realise is they do not want farms they want what we have,TVs,our Big homes, our cars etc, like in pre 94 elections they roamed the streets like they were shopping, saying that after the elections they would have that house and that house etc,and they were somewhat educated, now we deal with the un educated who want to follow a militant ancyl as they have nothing to loose, the ancyl will not change this agenda unless the anc dissolve its youth wing, until then everyone should use all resources,ie,internet books on how to fortify and secure your family, homes and arms yourselves by all means necasary.Than anc has to act or lamola may well get his wish.

      denise.ryan.5203 - 2012-06-23 09:39

Boycott the ANC government for the genocide against white people. Not one iota of support should be given to South Africa, a nation that is not acting to stop the genocide of thousands of white people. Over 4,000 white farmers and their family members have been killed since the fall of apartheid and upwards of 70,000 additional white South Africans have been murdered and hundreds of thousands robbed, raped or assaulted! Genocide Watch, the leading anti-Genocide organization on earth says Whites are facing Genocide in South Africa! There is far more reason on the basis of human rights to boycott South Africa today than there was during the apartheid regime. Under Apartheid, black people were not being butchered in their homes and on the streets of the country. South Africa went from one of the safest nations on earth to one of the most deadly. South Africa even leads the world in rape and the rape of children and babies. Under its European founders South Africa had a 5 percent unemployment rate for Whites and Blacks, now it has unemployment exceeding 50 percent. South Africa is heading toward the murderous and oppressive conditions of Zimbabwe and Mugabe.

      denise.ryan.5203 - 2012-06-23 10:21

Suspend the membership of South Africa in the UN.

      denise.ryan.5203 - 2012-06-23 21:14

White south africans are sitting on the precipice, and the black president of south africa is on film praising the murder of white south africans? this is the presidents post racial south africa and he is responsible... You can't co-exist with people who want to kill you. Enough turning the other cheek, pick up a weapon and defend yourselves.

  • gideon.joubert.10 - 2012-06-21 09:59

I have said this before, and I will say it again: the government and police, because of their ineptitude, must grant citizens more powers to protect themselves. We have a constitutional right to life and property, give us the Castle Doctrine or a "Stand Your Ground" law!

      badballie - 2012-06-21 10:49

The current law of this country negates the needc for any sort of "stand your ground" clause. Personal defense gives you the right to defend yourself (and any other person YOU choose to place under your care)this includes complete strangers. The onus is of course on you to prove that you acted in the only way you could, this however is fairly much a mute point as the "average person under the same circumstances" measure is used. This to the point where a military trained person can get away with "double Tapping" an assailant. (two shots, one to the body and one to the head) People need to start understanding the law and adhering to it as apposed to the current situation where they believe what they are told by the authorities instead of finding out the legal requirements. For example it is perfectly legal to carry a firearm openly displayed in a holster be it a hip, or shoulder holster, but do it and see how quickly a bunch or incompetent pigs take you down.

      gideon.joubert.10 - 2012-06-21 10:52

And that is the problem. Give us more freedom, give the criminals less. Make it easier for us as law abiding people to defend ourselves without being victimized by the authorities.

      steve.tucker.14661 - 2012-06-21 14:53

@badballie, Castle doctrine differs from our current laws in that you will not be charged unless wrong doing can be clearly shown if you defend yourself/family in your home. Some Us states extend castle doctrine to include any property you are lawfully occupying including cars. Currently under our law you will almost definitely be charged however, in very clear cut cases those charges are usually dropped. As for legally walking around with a firearm displayed, well that is incorrect. The FCA states that the firearm must be covered. Even cops in Mufti are by law required to have it covered but they often dont.

      flysouth - 2012-06-21 15:23

Castle doctrine is essential to protect the innocent and to effectively afford them more rights under the law than an attacker in the home. That attacker in the home, by entering the home unlawfully and with criminal intent has, under Castle, removed any onus of proof on the defender or justification for his lethal actions - and that is how it should be,and is in places where Castle Doctrine operates. Presently a perfectly legitimate shooting by a defender in his own home in the dead of night of an attacker who has broken in, results in a charge of murder, confiscation of the defender's weapons (yes even those weapons NOT used and still in the safe) and the vast expense of mounting a legal defence against this spurious charge. The only time this is not the case is where it can be shown without trace of doubt that the attacker was armed with a gun or other deadly weapon and used it to attempt murder. A truly shocking state of affairs, given that in the real-life scenario it is often impossible to know within the split-second decision time, what weapons a defender may be facing. @badballie A licenced gun owner may nor carry any weapon unless it is hidden from view - the days of sporting a pistol in a holster for all to see are long over as a result of the Firearms Control Act of 2000 which, quite ludicrously in my view, demands that any weapon be hidden by clothing, or be in an opaque bag or container when carried in public - stupid is as stupid does!

I can only hope the Americans that were visiting goes back to America and tell everyone they come across what transpired, maybe, just maybe, we'll get some international condemnation going.

Isn't it amazing that back in the apartheid era the world had sanctions against SA and this country was despised by everyone. Now that farmers are being slaughtered, the world is turning a blind eye??

      Mike - 2012-06-21 10:34

The rest of the World has given up on Africa and does not give a Rats @@s as what happens here a we do not have anything that they need

      faerrab - 2012-06-21 10:46

CRime in America is worst than SA - in Cetrain Neighbourhoods you cant even wear a black or red clothing as you will be attacked by gangs

      badballie - 2012-06-21 10:56

Believe me, the international community is being made very aware of what happens in this country, to the point that certain segments of the international community are aware of crimes committed here that have never even been reported on by our media. We also have growing "stop Genocide" groups overseas that make sure information on farm killing etc land up in the right hands. One must however at all time be mindful that the blacks and whites as groups are in fact law abiding peace loving people who have no wish to harm anyone, it is small minorities that through personal experience or plain separatist views that are the problem, and are actively stoking the flames. That being said its is also time for people to stop trying to force their own views on other people, it is not our similarities that make us human, its our differences.

      jacqui.daanevanrensburg - 2012-06-21 11:00

Faerrab, you cannot wear red or black in some neighborhoods because those are the gang colours of the gangs ruling that part of the city. Get your facts straight.

  • lebogang.molefo - 2012-06-21 10:06

Ok this is just too much. Why is it that these cowards target children, women and the elderly, the death penalty should be brought back *pissed*... It's no longer about black or white, it's about the fact that our country is infested with people who have disregard for any human life. Why can't the ruling party not organise a protest against the rape and ruthless killings that are happening in out country just like they matched for a stupid painting.... I'm angry right now... Give me thumbs up or thumbs down I don't care, all I care about is the fact that people are made to suffer because of cowards.....

A strong 'thumbs up' from me, Lebogang! This has nothing to do with colour, but everything to do with morals and some common sense about how we are going to source our food on 10 years time if we don't have farmers."Cowards" is too nice a word for these type of people.

      rian.dejager.3 - 2012-06-21 10:48

RESPECT Lebogang.. We should all stand together. And I agree... BRING BACK DEATH PENALTY... We are reaching crisis levels with violence in our country, and drastic steps should be taken. Wish I could give you a hundred more thumbs up.

      badballie - 2012-06-21 11:12

Agreed, but we must also be mindful of human nature, history shows us that what we are experiencing as a country has been experienced by every other country that is run by "freedom fighters" Cuba being a prime example well up until it became a dictatorship anyway. Che Guavara for instance, is still upheld as a freedom fighter hero, even though his most notorious role was to personally oversee the torture and murder of anyone deemed to be a threat to Fidel Castro's rule. Herein lies the folly of negotiating with the ANC, a party who holds Che Guavara up as a shining light, hero and role model, instead of the abuser of human rights, and killer of woman and children that he actually was.

      arthur.hugh - 2012-06-21 11:42

Totally agree Lebogang! Sadly we end up fighting here on forums flinging racist rubbish at each other. We need to talk solutions and then all of us take action together, united races as South Africans, and demand this slaughtering is stopped. It's happening in townships and it's happening in farms, it's not fair and makes me angry too. Let's all think of how we can come up with positive solutions, then put them into action... that's the only way to solve this.

      flysouth - 2012-06-21 15:28

@badballie Castro - a middle-class waster and perennial 'student' who had never worked a day in his life before recruiting his revolutionary mob, and a hero to the ANC of course, is reckoned to have executed 20 000 "opponents" and "dissidents" after he took power in Cuba. Higher class scum you could not wish to find!

  • samantha.5243 - 2012-06-21 10:08

I just dont get it, ... two innocent people killed in their sleep just for a few guns and cell phones!!!- is this the value of life in South Africa?- did they have to kill them? - :(

      badballie - 2012-06-21 11:17

Its got little or nothing to do with theft or robbery, as the US media reports, the ANC has neatly sidestepped the spectre of genocide by classifying all race based murders as petty crimes instead of racist attacks. One just has to look at our status as a country with Genocide International to realize that whether a planned assault or simply people acting out, this country is on the verge of a full scale cleansing. Talk of a race war is of course just that talk that amounts to nil, there are to may people of different race groups on either side of the fence for that to happen.

  • Bless Boswell - 2012-06-21 10:09

This is the result of singing the song that Malema loves so much. The fact that he defends the right to do so is evidence if the fact that he wishes all whites dead. This is the poison that he and his buddy lamola spread when they address the youth. And our dear globetrotting president does nothing about it. Is he even aware that this has happened?

      cynthia.smith.71619533 - 2012-06-21 11:51

The President spends too much time dancing and doing other things instead of ruling the country. I don't think he knows or cares what happens in our country. He is having a wonderful time flying around the world.

  • warwick.railton.7 - 2012-06-21 10:11

The more I read about the Rhodesian bush war and the terrorist tactics of ZAPU and ZANLA on the killing of white farmers, the more I'm convinced this is government sanctioned. This is classic terrorist activity, not criminal in the true sense, but an act of terror carried out by terror gangs. The only difference is that then the farmers had the support of the government, our farmers are at the mercy of an evil incompetent (failed) terrorist organization that is hell bent on chasing them away.

      Rob - 2012-06-21 10:35

our only blessing is the learning capability of the majority of the majority, limpopo for example, no text books,,i passed school, IEB without ever opening a text book, just by listening and teaching myself. so military trained or not, i bet they never learned very much.

      denise.ryan.5203 - 2012-06-24 00:01

The ANC government says this isn't a hate-crime, it's just a casualty of crime... Even if this were true, the ANC is ultimately responsible for the causes of the crime. It is also culpable for its inability to cope with the situation. However, it should be remembered that the ANC has repeatedly released tens of thousands of criminals from the jails -- around 70,000 when Mandela became president, and 40,000 to celebrate a birthday of Mandela, Mbeki and Zuma each unleashed about 30,000. Furthermore, as the prisons are so overcrowded, criminals are either not prosecuted at all, or released early. In 2006, an army of at least 63,000 were released to relieve prison overcrowding. Releasing sentenced criminals from jail is a crime against humanity. The function of a government is to protect its citizens against the initiation of force. To protect the rights of the citizens such as the right to life, own property, and the pursuit of happiness, as stated in the constitution. The ANC is violating every single human right the citizens of South Africa have in the constitution.

Apartheid has been accused of dehumanising Blacks - indeed this is true but the unchecked crime as a result of apathetic, ineffectual, self serving, ANC Government leadership has resulted in all South Africans, of all races, being dehumanised. I see they have arrested 5 people this morning near Steilloop. As extended family from the mudered uncle and seriously wounded aunt, I would like to know exactly what lead to the catching of the five. Surely the community in the area, who are mostly black, assisted the police in the arrestation of the suspects, that will proof to most ofthe people on both sides of the spectrum that we should not make it a racial issue. Albeit a governmental issue in not fullfilling their obligation as per the Constitution. Lekota (Terror) might be correct what he said in parliament, the President of this country is more concerned about his own esteem than his constitutional accountability.

Cultivate your allegiances with the good humans and neighbors around you. Mine; black, brown, asian and white, are active and supportive and quickly give up their tme to chase criminals! POLICE are a waste of time BROOMS to clean up if they even bother to arrive! Private security are slightly better. NEIGHBORS are BRILLIANT!!!

Crime affects us all, it is time for all citizens to take the Government to task on crime. It is rife in all social facets of life, there are dozens of similar attacks happening daily that go unreported; does that make it invisible - NO! Government as appointed / elected custodian has to provide and account for the right of ALL to live in peace and safety, free of threats and heinous events like this. This isnt about colour / race / inequality / have and have nots. Its about our lives as citizens of this country. Time to act and force Government and the Security forces to provide the services we deserve........................

      timmy.ditsele - 2012-06-21 12:20

like I always say Let's organise a MILLION MAN MARCH to pretoria, THEN A MILLION WOMEN MARCH the following week. no politicians, no white people,no indians and definately no black people should attend.only law abiding taxpaying citizens of this country.ANYBODY????????????

      Bless Boswell - 2012-06-21 12:31

And what if the white settlers have been here longer than you have? Does that not make you a settler too?

      John - 2012-06-21 13:09

Are you crazy? If the government eliminated CRIME they would lose the 14% VAT on all property lost by the PEOPLE victims which generally is paid by their insurance co.s! We would not need a corrupt police FORCE to extract bribes! It would be the death of security firms who protect the police! We would not need the BANKS! We could carry cash again and not be ripped off by BANKS for their FEES! The GOVERNMENT needs crime in order to SURVIVE! What funds could be misappropriated if there was no CRIME

If the state can not get School books delivered to schools, six months into the school year, please explain how does any person expect proper functioning of police force, public protection or what ever. The result is what you see in this article. There is no interest from our goverment to provide a proper security plan. This applies to townships, farms, cities, ect. take the $ 2 B that was "borrowed" to IMF and rather use it to employ one million additional security staff. invest that money in the police force and defence force. Get the best training staff that money can buy and train the police force, contract private security companies to join police force, do organized patroling. in short : Wake-up! If private business or companies face negative share performances or poor financial results, they take action and they rectify the situation. Why can our governement not try to run this country a little more like a business and actively and agresively attack problems by throwing all available resources at the problem? Even this bancrupt little Island (Sao Tome) where I live will not tolerate even one murder per year as a statistic. Sorry ZUMA,if you were a manager in ANY normal company ( the normal ones that ANCYL wants to chase out of the country) you would have been fired within the first 24 hours!

      flysouth - 2012-06-21 15:38

It is even worse than that - "There is no interest from our goverment to provide a proper security plan". Fact is there was a security plan, fully functional, called the Kommandos. The ANC saw fit to disband that a few years back. I wonder why?

      catherineangelique.swarts - 2012-06-21 21:19

yes Jan, the police are not doing their jobs, seen it fo myself. they are always in the malls, mall crawling. or eating, thats why they all so fat.

  • ratsaka.eugene - 2012-06-21 12:14

This is a tragic story. A lot doesn't make sense. When people start cutting burglar bars, surely the man would have called the police, or called someone, did he. No. Why? Because they were attacked by someone smart, someone they knew. I think these 'shocked' Americans know something. Their records should be checked, we don't want a Shrien Dewani extradition saga. They must not be allowed to leave the country. Limpopo people maybe everything but they are definitely not killers.

I Hope the lady recovers soon. my heart felt sympathy to her family. i hope they catch who did it and she gets to watch them go to prison. but we all know because of their black privilege in our court system it wont be for long and they will be out on R1000 bail in no time. that is if they are caught because they are sheltered by th ANCYL. where are all those weapons going ? they are stockpiling it for something we all know is coming. they are targeting the old, why ? we need to adopt new laws that shoots scum like them on sight. no trial and no questions. we have gotten so use to this treatment and allowing them to get away because most of the police force is pro black criminal and bribes that we cant see the writing on the wall.

      mondli.botha.7 - 2012-06-22 05:53

  • John - 2012-06-21 13:26

Let's face it, nine out of ten people are good people no matter what colour or race. Just look at the racial makeup of S.A. Nine decent black humans and One black criminal human for each white human and one in ten whites are criminal. All decent humans must eliminate from their groups the criminals in those groups. The police are merely the brooms that come too late to sweep up the mess. Government and police are meant to maintain an orderly peace so that business can be conducted! Also to protect and SERVE

      mondli.botha.7 - 2012-06-22 05:49

Hi John this is sober comment made a by a sober man. Every where is South Africa people across racial line killed by criminals but some people here in this country just don't get it. All of us affected by it in every corner. Please guys STOP elevate crime that took place as is unique to farmers alone. We need a strategic not a racial response bcos it aint solvin nuttin

      Pixie86 - 2012-06-22 23:49

gillian, are white farmers supposed to get special treatment when they're killed? How many violent crimes on black, indian and coloured people are reported daily? Do you think the government will be sending out condolences to every victim's family? Hardly. We're all suffering dear.

We cant live together, lets just face it. America in 2012 still struggles with racism. The have-not will always steel from the have. But the manner that these animals employ is truly African. Look at Africa over the ages its a barbaric country with barbaric people living here. this will never change. we must me allowed to defend ourselves only then will be able to prosper. If he threatens you shoot first, if he enters your property you shoot. The voortrekkers kept them at bay with a gun so it has to be again. in those days we relied on ourselves for protection. how we sit on our asses and expect the limp police force to do it. even the cops that fight this violent crime with fire find themselves in cells tonight.

  • Khetha Hlophe - 2012-06-22 05:30

Why kill such an old person coz is left with less than 50yrs to leave. Why not focus your energy in something positive, even selling news paper can make a pos diff but Murder(WHOEVER) is killed is not good. The blood will be in your hands 4ever

  • nompumelelo.madonda - 2012-06-22 07:46

All I can say is RIP and my condolences to the family during this time... These killings are to be classified as priority and every effort be put into STOPPING them!!! We are all humans irrespective of skin colour and land ownership. What satisfaction do you get from taking away a life?

  • jones.mkandawire - 2012-06-22 09:07

My heartfelt condolences to the family. As for eugene prisloo ,its simple, no African barbarian invited to you this barbaric country neither are you forced to stay against your will. Africans are not barbaric or you wouldnt here insulting us today

  • andy.rossell - 2012-06-22 11:09

South Africa in turmoil more farm killings .The ANC government in south Africa has failed all of us crime is rife and it is going to come down to us to fight crime. Our police have over 27000 officers that are incapable of solving crime and incompetent of handling a fire arm.

  • john.duplessis2 - 2012-06-22 13:40

I am a Boer. I am a builder and inventor… in my veins pump the blood of generations of pioneers and brave, intelligent, hard- working people. People that tamed a wild continent and built civilization where there was nothing. As a white person I am proud of the achievements of my forefathers. Most whites alive today are made to feel a sense of guilt. They feel guilty for ‘wrong doings’ of past generations – Blacks have turned into victims demanding reparations; and so we turn on each other with passion. Racists and anti-racists, brother against brother, Whites against White and Whites against Blacks. Whites refuse to accept Black behaviourism, sub standards and Blacks…well, they’re happy to play the role of victim - we experience that to the full in RSA. I say no more. I refuse to let it go to hell and leave my children nothing. It’s time to stand up and be counted. It’s time to make the ultimate plans. As a final and chilling thought, there are the prophecies of the old Boer prophet, Van Rensburg. Van Rensburg died in 1926, but he predicted that the day would come when the Blacks would rule South Africa. He predicted that the Blacks in South Africa would eventually take everything from the Whites and try to kill us all... but Van Rensburg also predicted that they would not succeed… whether true or not, there is always hope. And hope is the only human emotion stronger than fear…

      Pixie86 - 2012-06-22 23:40

just the fact that you lump black people together shows just how trully idiotic you are. The problem is white people like you still believe blacks are stupid. I don't play the victim, neither do most people i know. I've worked damn hard for what i have and could care less what some white person is doing. You think our lives revolve around you. I have no inclination to be a farmer so quite frankly i say screw your land. I want my own house so why the hell would i want to take yours. You're so blinded by your hatred you miss the fact that blacks have worked their butts off in trying times and are building themselves. You paint us all with the same brush of some crazed murderers who are killing people on farms and stupidly believe all blacks are out to do the same. You must be a very unhappy person.
