Farmer foils attack by muti-burning robbers

2012-10-08 09:14

Johannesburg - An Mpumalanga farmer has told how a farm attack on him and his pregnant wife was stopped after neighbours arrived to help him.

“It could have been three lives lost,” said Willem Cloete, 28, from the farm in Middelburg, reported Beeld.

Cloete and his wife Elsje, 28, who is 34 weeks pregnant, had been in bed on Friday night when they heard the dogs barking.

He saw a shadow move across the yard and smelled smoke from a fire the robbers had made outside the house.

“I got my firearm ready and let my neighbour know on my cellphone that they should come.”

A shootout ensued between neighbours who arrived in a bakkie and the suspected robbers.

One of the men was wounded and later gave himself up.

One of the neighbours was shot but not seriously injured.

Cloete said he believed muti had been burned on the farm.

A police officer said Cloete’s claim that police only arrived after more than an hour would be investigated.

Its not over. I guarantee you the farmers will be charged with murder or manslaughter by the police. Read another article on IOL where exactly this has happened.

  • irma.white.9 - 2012-10-08 09:27

Well done, and well done to the neighbours for being willing to assist even though their lives were in danger. Brave people.

  • siphiwo.maurice - 2012-10-08 09:39

This serves to confirm what the National Police Commissioner said about crimes in our communities. Crimes, will only be put to an end by our own efforts as residents, not by police only. Well done to these communities for acting together to save lives. This should spread to other parts as well and all of us starting to protect our own. We can defeat crime if we all pull together as communities.

      chilli.stephenson1 - 2012-10-08 10:11

We all need guns though. Otherwise, the Robbers have an upper hand!

      Annemarie White - 2013-06-22 06:34

I fully agree with you. We must start co-operating bit by bit, like these people did. In towns and cities, street by street. I watch your back, and you watch mine. Together we defend and keep safe.

  • jaco.human.562 - 2012-10-08 09:42

It would have been better to read that all the thugs were killed instead of of one being wounded. Now it will cost the taxpayer money to treat him in hospital and to pay for his luxury stay in prison.

It would be better if they were all dead by now...this thing of murdering the farmers it must come to an end,we need solution fast...

      jako.merwe - 2012-10-08 10:15

absolutely, solution needed for all murders in SA. I heard somewhere that some countries use something called the "death penalty" for rape and murder. maybe we should look in to that

      art5SA - 2012-10-29 09:51

Whole damn CABINET will be on the gallows.... should this law be introduced into law!

  • BigChiefPlumbPudding - 2012-10-08 09:51

Good news. Why? - because the farmer was prepared. Time to lock n load and eliminate these vermin. We are not dealing with civilised human beings.

  • justin.pretorius - 2012-10-08 09:55

Unbelievable what farmers have to live through on a daily basis!

  • mack.myburgh - 2012-10-08 09:58

  • mattewis.kat - 2012-10-08 10:03

Being awoken sufficiently early and a well organised civil defense strategy is the key to survival! Thanks to the ANC-government decommissioning the Commando's, that's your only option. Hope the injured neighbor makes a full recovery soon. Don't bother with the cops even if they show, unless you require a case number for a possible insurance claim! They can't shoot or catch criminals in most cases!

  • bheki.shabangu.10 - 2012-10-08 10:15

Sad.Shoot 2 kill de Robbers even the one who gave himself up.He derseve to die.

  • slritchie - 2012-10-08 10:17

Heart warming to see neighbours standing together like this and willing to place their lives on the line! God bless you, and may you eliminate this scourge that plagues our land! One bullet, one savage!

      BigChiefPlumbPudding - 2012-10-08 10:23

100%. Just make it 2-3 bullets per savage to ensure the disgusting things doesn't breath ever again.

      slritchie - 2012-10-08 10:27

hahaha I would be reluctant to waste even a bullet on them, but considering the thickness of their skulls, a double tap is actually essential.

  • jeroen.kelderman - 2012-10-08 10:43

  • conrad777snyman - 2012-10-29 09:12

Very proud of the few SOUTH AFRICANS that remain in the country.I have left many years ago..but would like to go back at some point. It is really funny how apartheid backfired and left Zim and SA in a silent civil war..I just don't understand how people would want to kill the ecocnomy any furhter by killing and raping the wifes and kids of the only people supporting the country and / economy....????I understand that the old regeme destroyed a lot of things for non-whites 60 years ago but now in 2012 is not the place for revenge.Take whatever you can and rebuild the beautiful country that I once live in and make everybody want to come back to a save and prosperous SOUTH AFRICA we uses to salute to when I was very young.

  • charnelle.bester - 2012-11-04 11:41
