Farmer needs miracle to survive attack

2013-01-08 09:37

Bloemfontein - A well-known farmer from Villiers in the Free State is fighting for his life after he and his wife were attacked on their farm.

Jannie du Plessis, 64, and his wife Stinnie, 59, were attacked by robbers in their bedroom on Sunday night.

He was shot in the stomach and both were locked in their safe for several hours before being rescued.

The farmer’s brother, Johan du Plessis, said a miracle would have to happen for his brother to survive, reported Volksblad.

Du Plessis said one of his brother’s kidneys had to be removed but due to the heavy internal bleeding an operation and even dialysis treatment had not been possible.

His brother’s small intestine was also damaged. Du Plessis was receiving blood transfusions and also had diminished heart capacity due to three heart attacks he had suffered in the past.

“[Strictly] speaking he doesn’t stand a chance. We will need a miracle,” said his brother, who added that they were trying to remain positive.

Stinnie du Plessis was said to be badly traumatised by the incident and was struggling to cope.
The couple has two sons.

A farm union representative said the senseless attack on one of the community’s most prominent farmers had come as a shock to many.

When one continues to bite the hand that feeds you, you will eventually starve.

      Tuyez - 2013-01-08 09:49

Criminal and robbers dont care, Who the person is. People die everyday killed by these lazy thinkers who cannot think of something better to do for living. I pray that they are caught and sentenced for many life sentences.

      Killbot79 - 2013-01-08 10:22

@solly - you are the troll GFY

      bongani.nsele.58 - 2013-01-08 11:46

who is feeding who? simple logic says that each man / woman stands for themselves....there is this notion that there are humans pre ordained to feed other humans....not true and not natural.....

      pierre.devilliers.9231 - 2013-01-08 11:47

Anyway farm murders are very tragic, similarly tragic as any other murder.

      Heibrin - 2013-01-08 13:01

@Alicia: I think your 400 000 is a tad low, I tried to verify by comparing 2001 and 2011 census results, but the discrepancies are so blatant that I've given up. E.g in 2001: 9.65 million people speak either Afrikaans or English as a first language, however whites, coloureds and asians make up a total of 9.4 million. I don't believe that over 250 000 blacks have their first language as English, or am I mistaken?

      jomar.delange - 2013-01-08 15:20

@Alicia - Yes crime and violence in SA is rife but let's not repeat half truths and wild alarmist claims. Your murder stats are wrong since only one in 33 murder victims are white. The number of commercial farmers have been reduced primarily due to increased consolidation of land ownership. Smaller scale farmers have sold out to big agri-business.

      mathilda.williams.1 - 2013-01-08 21:21

If a miracle is what is needed for Jannie to survive, I am praying for a miracle. I am also praying the attackers are caught and put behind bars forEVER.

      heibrin.venter - 2013-01-09 01:53

@omnivore: You are talking about all murders in SA, Alicia is talking about the farm murders: 310 farmers per 100 000 farmers are murdered. So: for the 40 000 farmers in SA 124 will be killed this year. No half-truths, no wild alarmist claims. In as far as the reduction in the number of farmers goes, I think you are sorely mistaken, a lot of farms have been consolidated, yes, however the previous owners was inadvertently coerced into leaving due to attacks like these, remaining farmers, just in different countries. In the regular workplace this would be seen as a 'constructive dismissal', whereby the employee (farmer) is forced to resign due to the employer (government) making his / her working conditions untenable.

      saamprater.saampraat - 2013-01-09 09:47

Bongani, Africa is your example. And locally we can count the black commercial farmers that have made it on one hand You are so wrong boet, so wrong

      Rick.Gonzo.56 - 2013-01-09 10:15

Boneheads - "It's not crime its genocide". Then what do you call crime in the cities and townships you idiots?

      thabang.maleka.35 - 2013-01-09 11:28

@Alicia, well that is life they have to accept it as a reality. If it was so dangerous they would have given up long time ago. Miners know how dangerous the underground life is but they still do it, police do their best and solders put their life on the line, but guess what Farmers have a choice, they can go find a nice beach and relax there or simply pack and go. Why do they give a hook, I would care if they cared to pay their workers a living salary

      thabang.maleka.35 - 2013-01-09 11:38

Who gives hood, maybe if treated they farmworkers like human

      jennifer.bosman.9 - 2013-01-09 12:00

@heibrin. You are not getting the logic. Is a farmer's murder worse than any other murder? If Alicia & you believe that, then you have a serious problem. 1 out of 33 murdered are not white, fact. So her stats are half truths, as she does not mention this reality and infact goes about completely wrong in claiming "100 times more white people in the last 63 years"....numbers and percentages are completely different in relation to population sizes, cause if this was true almost every white person in SA would have been murdered!!!

      Heibrin - 2013-01-09 12:22

@Jennifer: Respectfully, I think you are missing the point that both Alicia and I are trying to make (and it's definitely not that farm murders are more *special* than other murders, apart from their racial motivation!); what we're saying is that per capita farmers are more likely to be murdered than any other group in South Africa. I think when you say 1 in 33 people murdered as white the assumption is that the other 32 were non-white, so I don't see what reality is not being mentioned?

      riette.nothling - 2013-01-09 14:40

@ bongani, so the milk you drink, the sugar, the rice and meat and vegetables, you grow all that in your own backyard? Commercial farmers grow the products we purchase in Checkers & all the other shops. Do you now understand the logic of biting the hand that feeds you? No farmers = no products = no food...

      thabang.bonang.7 - 2013-01-09 16:43

@alicia.myburgh.65, thanks for the stats. Please give the statistics of how many blacks were killed in the same period.

      erdna.warrie - 2013-01-09 23:39

@alicia - I thought it was over 1 mil that left.

      heibrin.venter - 2013-01-10 02:32

@thabang: she did actually state that under the Apartheid government 7518 black were killed, if memory serves this is the number determined by the TRC. If you're talking about after '94 I have no clue, you'd need to contact the police stats bureau, and if you do find out please post it here, as I'd be very interested to compare; if I had to hazard a guess it would be in the order of 240 000 - 260 000?

      thabang.bonang.7 - 2013-01-10 12:53

@alicia, whites do it professionally. Since majority are rich they hire poor blacks to kill other whites and make it look like ordinary crime.

They can't even run a tub, never-mind a judicial system that have powers over life and death. No thanks. A separate piece of land for the whites (homeland) seems to be the only answer After all, every tribe in this country have their piece except the white tribe. Our police are just helpless. Its farm attacks, rape of innocent children ect ect.The rape of the student in India outraged the nation and the entire world, and has called for social soul searching, perhaps we need a revolution against crime...

      disillusioned.sa - 2013-01-08 10:05

They are leaving - in their droves! Countries like Nigeria now have fresh foods of high standard at their markets. Because SA and Zim whiteys are given 99 year leases and asked to teach them how to farm and these guys are willing to learn from the whitey's cause they DON'T have a HUGE racist chip on their shoulders and are actually willing to work and learn. But then their education system is also better than ours....

      richard.hipkin - 2013-01-08 10:19

Mpho, about 36,000 of our farmers have left and are providing food security to other African countries who have opened their arms to OUR farmers because we just slaughter them left, right and bloody centre.

When will enough be enough! In this country we have the capacity to adequately combat crime yet officials in all departments just play pass the buck...never taking responsibility and ensuring accountability. We have massive budgets for policing, defense, correctional services which should be used to curb this type of senseless violent crime which is not only causing loss of life in the most gruesome manner, but also destabilizing the economy and putting the countries food security in jeopardy not to mention decimating race relations. This just cant go on! Wake up government! Before its too late

Agree Sazi, but those who can make the necessary decisions are too obsessed with the outdated communistic agenda of old. It seems if self-enrichment is not on the agenda, they look for more ingenious ways how to tax us to death (toll-gates, fuel-levy, VAT etc) Two options: Give whites a separate homeland or bring back the commando systems that successfully protected the farmers in the past You decide why they won't do it and thing if they deserve another opportunity after 2014

There are those who are coming with stats about the killings, comparing the times of apartheid and democracy...where does that take us to? Nowhere. So my humble suggestion to all of us is, stop spreading hatred, stop making gains, stop scoring points in the face of death / attacks. We must work together to find the solution. I am talking to those who love this country and who are prepared mantally, to make it happen. This country, belongs to all. There is no one who is better and or superior than the other. If you happen to still have that outdated mentality, change, the time is now.

DEATH PENALTY will stop or reduce crime....

any killing in this country should be looked at with the same intolerance - irrespective of whether the victims are black or white. On the same headlines, a body of a young woman was found burnt in Soweto. Crime affects us all, and the sickness of violence that accompanies many cases is a deep seated issue that can't just be erased. (with the exception of a death penalty). For the rest of us, all i can hope for is that we don't allow these incidences to create more hatred, and to create a bigger divide. For all of us to fight the common criminal - the person with the mindset to kill and hurt, not the person because of the colour of their skin. And while i don't believe in weapons, I believe each person should not sit back and hope that the government will fix things. We need to look out for ourselves but in the same breathe be active in our community and look out for each other. We've dwelled in apathy for way too long.

Me Too!- Just tell me when and where

  • Sonnyjakes - 2013-01-08 11:12

@atholl.canterbury "There is a hidden (secret) force that is orchestrating these attacks." Don't know about others but heard a rumour that Muldersdrift problems are about land. People are made offers for their land but refuse. Not long after they are attacked. Apparently some of the culprits caught admitted to cops that white business men and local councillers behind it. Always had a feeling there is someone behind these attacks and that the majority of perpetrators are paid to do it?

      DuToitCoetzee - 2013-01-08 12:28

I am not sure how correct your speculation can be, but I suggest you visit the area. When going down to highway, before turning of to the Muldersdrift town you will see that the shacks are built next to the highway. I mend NEXT to it. It can be true that the "township" wants to expend because they have no other way to go. That will mean that they are not to far from the road and when protesting, they can control an imported road. Maybe you will get a businessman that wants to make a quick buck, but no normal insane one will invest massive in housing, knowing that the "township" is creeping closer. Maybe industrial? What is noticeable is the growing jobless population in the area and all needs a roof and food. Maybe you can give us a link to the article mentioning the admittance of the culprits?

      Sonnyjakes - 2013-01-08 14:00

Heard by word of mouth from someone in Krugersdorp so could be just gossip mongering. Other areas I still have a sneaking suspicion that greddy people are involved. Pigrims and other places.

  • fanie.kritzinger.9 - 2013-01-08 11:13

F@@k the Rhinos, SAVE THE FARMERS!!!!

  • will.macquire.9 - 2013-01-08 11:21

Fact. Most of our farmers are found to be killed by scarvenging illegal foreigners without id's or any documents.Get rid of them and the farm killings will drop sharply. I bet the suspects here are hungry starving illegals again. Our government wont acknowledge this because they are the ones who allowed them to run loosely in the country because they wanted to be seen to be sympathetic to fellow Africans.

  • lee.ferreira - 2013-01-08 11:25

Bring back the death penalty!! That will be the only dererant!

      andrew.m.grant.75 - 2013-01-08 11:56

The ANC will not do anything, including re-instating the death penalty, to stop this. This is what they want. How many ANC supporters do you need to hear singing "Kill the Farmer" or "Dhibul Ibhunu" before you realise that this is going down just the way they want it to. Not quite sure how they plan on feeding everyone when all the farmers are dead but then they don't really have a good track record when it comes to forward planning.

  • Brian Dorning - 2013-01-08 11:41

Racial divide being caused again, funny how these cowards attack soft targets! No murder should be acceptable (black or white), death penalty for murderers! For the racist people out there suggesting that white farmers should leave the country, why don't you boycott everything that they produce? Don't eat anything, and when you starve, you'll realize actually how much you need them.

      kimsaiyanprincess.murison - 2013-01-08 13:12

      - Excellent point! Everyone saying that farmers should go back to their countries of origin, but are still consuming their products everyday are morons with no education. Who will take over these farms, I wonder? AND run them successfully?

  • george.frangs - 2013-01-08 11:45

    White genocide anyone?

  • Elisha - 2013-01-08 11:56

All the Christians need to pray for this man to survive. Miracles are real, and if we all stand together, and call on God to heal him, God will! and Miracles will be proven to all the non believers out there! This country is such a mess! Death penelty will never be brought back... government officials are too corrupt themselves!

  • bongani.nsele.58 - 2013-01-08 12:03

in Africa we have all been farmers...always been...this model must come back to our land

      gerhardw - 2013-01-08 23:51

that explains why the land claim farms are so succesfull. (sarcasm)

      bongani.nsele.58 - 2013-01-09 07:54

African people are natural farmers...always in tune with nature..we till the land for food not exploit the land for self enrichment disguised as food security...whatever that means...we need to correct this once again live well in our open lands of Africa

      Heibrin - 2013-01-09 12:25

@bongani: you are talking about subsistence farming, please explain to me how those living in the cities would survive?

      christinevanduuren - 2013-01-15 10:04

What on earth are you talking about. Dit you smoke "anything"?

  • nkosie.ngubane.52 - 2013-01-08 12:04

Why is ANC blamed for any bad thing that happens in SA?

      Killbot79 - 2013-01-08 12:07

Because the ANC does nothing to prevent it. The ANC is corrupt, the president is corrupt, it breeds a nation that is morally corrupt, that's why the ANC gets blamed. Don't act surprised. When you have a yoof leeg ex-leader singing songs about killing farmers and the ANC says nothing then I blame the ANC.

      DuToitCoetzee - 2013-01-08 12:35

That is what you do when the leading party runs the country and the citizens encounter endless problems for a long time with no solutions in sight. You complain until the ruling party listen and do something or the people listen and remove them. That how it gets done. Your solo voice joining other for the benefit of all and your country.

      kimsaiyanprincess.murison - 2013-01-08 12:49

      - Because they are the ruling party and thus in charge of it!!! They are responsible for running and protecting it.

      jenny.nel.100 - 2013-01-09 19:18

Because, Nkosie, the ANC is the ruling party. They run the country. They are responsible for our safety and security, for food security, for peace and prosperity of all South Africans, for the education of our children ..... They are stealing to the point where there is nothing left. They hide the crime statistics so hide their failure. The murder of farmers is shocking, but so is the murder of an old Granny and her grandchildren in rural KZN. The violent crime n South Africa is a very bad reflection on the ANC. It shows their incompetence and callous disregard for the blood shed. Attacking one another on this forum is detracting from those responsible, and the ANC is responsible. Get rid of them. They are so wrapped up in their stripping of the state coffers for their own personal benefit, why should they care about violent crime. I cannot understand that the ANC till has any support at all. Their failure in every single sphere of government is spectacular.

  • ray.molekoa.5 - 2013-01-08 12:34

@dlayani tivani, you must be out of your mind with your stupid irrelevant comments !

  • sagebrush.bush - 2013-01-08 12:56

I remember my grandfather telling me that a person might need a doctor,a preacher or a lawyer a couple days during one's life but you need a farmer every day of your life.

  • francois.v.eeden.3 - 2013-01-08 13:03

    why why why

  • rollingstone.kanyane - 2013-01-08 13:58

i think this has been more than enough i think one way or another farmers should somehow retaliate this senseless atrocities of killing defenceless people irrespective of the colour of the perpetrators

  • mack.myburgh - 2013-01-08 14:11

find them, shoot them ,and let them bleed for hours !
