Farmer shot 3 times in farm attack

2013-02-05 10:17

Johannesburg - An elderly farmer from Mpumalanga is recovering in hospital after he was attacked and shot three times on his farm near Standerton on Monday, Beeld reported on Tuesday.

Jan Smith, 72, and his wife Marieta, 68, were overpowered by armed men who forced them to open their safe, took two weapons, then shot Smith in his chest, thigh and arm.

According to the couple's son, Hardus Smith, his mother was punched several times. The gun with which Jan Smith was shot did not belong to him, Beeld reported.

The robbers took the couple's car keys and left in their Toyota Rav 4.

Smith was taken to the Parkland Clinic in Springs, where he was stabilised and would undergo surgery on Tuesday, according to his son.

Police spokesperson Amos Vilakazi said police were investigating cases of attempted murder and robbery.

According to our beloved pres, this is not a problem. It falls under normal crime..nope, farm attacks aren't a problem at all..

      peter.ndamase - 2013-02-05 10:56

I believe all citizens should be given high priority when comes to crime, hell they are ordinary residential citizens who are under attack on a daily basis. Those ordinary citizens also contributes to the economy of the country in their respective industries. The problem is not police but our justice system is flawed and always in favour of criminals. Research shows that those farm attackers are mostly repeat offenders, how do you let loose a dangerous criminals.

      Revelgen - 2013-02-05 10:58

According to statistics, the murder rate of farmers in SA per 100 000 is just over one hundred times the comparable amount of farmers murdered in Britain. Our farmers are the people with skills who are providing South Africa with food. Yet the ANC seems to think this is just OK, because heck, drunken brawls result in dozens of murders in squatter camps. Maybe if the murder rate of ANC MP's was 100 times the rate of minister murders in Britain, they would sit up and take notice?

      semonatenate - 2013-02-05 11:54

compare the comments here with that one of the elderly of soweto being run over by the musician. Just.....

      amelia.basson - 2013-02-05 12:52

FARMS NEED SPECIAL PROTECTION because they’re isolated and help is too far. Murderers have all the time in the world to torture victims for hours – put them in deep freezes, burn them with irons, bash babies’ heads against walls and force tied up victims in baths with boiling water. Yes, I think farm murders should get high priority status, because these yellow bellied farm attackers should be tortured themselves!

      Jean - 2013-02-05 13:11

@semonatenate - Can you distinguish between an accident of someone running over someone else ( could have been negligence and the person should be punished accordingly) and criminals breaking into an elderly couples house. Not just to steal, but to torture and kill. It this was just a robbery they would have taken what ever they wanted and left the couple unharmed locked up in a room or something .Really what threat did they pose. How can you be blinded by your own racism so much that you can not see the brutality of what is happening. How would you feel and react if thousands of elderly helpless black people get tortured, killed and raped on a daily basis.

      ann.ornelas - 2013-02-05 13:25

@ Semonatenate.. I am having trouble understanding your logic, there is a huge difference between and accident (the elderly lady who was run over) and violent robbery which has led to a man bing shot 3 times and his wife beaten up. One is an accident and the other is intentional. Go and google the meanings of the words and you should understand where I am coming from. You are just trolling trying to create dicord

      Doep100 - 2013-02-05 14:03

And once again an elderly "soft target". Cowards!

      riad.mahomed - 2013-02-05 14:05

I'm fed up with crime in SA. I now decided to abandon the community policing forum I attend. I’m removing my alarm system and cancelling my armed reaction service contracted to a private security company. I’m ripping out the barbed wire & electric fencing. I’m putting up 2 Al-Qaida flags on my roof, and on my gate I’m gone write “BEWARE THE FUNDAMENTALIST”. By so doing, my property would be watched by the CIA, FBI, NIA, SIU & SAP 24/7. Good luck to all the criminals.

  • D_MAN - 2013-02-05 10:29

All farmers must arm themselves. The government does not care about you and the police have also said you are not important to have more police protect you. So arm yourselves. Shoot first and ask questions later.

      Jason - 2013-02-05 10:37

I cant understand with all the farm murders going on why these folks are not carrying side arms all the time. The cops are not going to help them. they need to help themselves by making themselves difficult targets. Its a sad state of affairs but at some stage you need to take responsibility for yourself. I wish them both speedy recoveries, both physical and mental.

      jacqui.daanevanrensburg - 2013-02-05 10:55

Jason, do you carry a side arm in your living room?.

      Dazza22 - 2013-02-05 11:19

Err they were armed, their guns were in the safe. They were overpowered before they had a chance.

      nu_un_clear - 2013-02-05 12:45

Keep your gun with you at all times!

      piet.snot.77964 - 2013-02-05 15:57

jacqui.daanvanrensburg - yes I carry my firearm in my living room and all over the house and in the garden and while I am in the garage - 24/7 and wherever I go (there are actually some people - black, coloured and white - in this country { 2 have since left for NZ } that are VERY pleased that I did) and if I am attacked and am able to use it for my or my family self protection I will.

      pieter.lourens.982 - 2013-02-05 17:08

Jason, it is illegal to carry a firearm in public if it is not concealed in some way or another. In winter ok, but put a jacket in 35 degree centigrade to conceal your weapon !

  • stan.luthuli - 2013-02-05 10:30

respect the elderly please! respect human life. if you are a lowlife lazy scum who survives by stealing, then steal don't harm people!!!

  • silenta.solly - 2013-02-05 10:30

Wish they can find these scumbags and kill them and say it was an accident, in fact i wish the same fate on all people who kill other people just to rob them

  • eyesears.handsfeet - 2013-02-05 10:35

Question: How does the "robbers" know who to attack, specially on farms that has got weapons? Who's leaking info? May whoever it is wheel turn very slowly and very painfully.

  • tlotlo.phele - 2013-02-05 10:36

  • andy.zondi - 2013-02-05 10:37

      avril.powrie - 2013-02-05 11:19

I live on a farm, every night I check our windows, doors and flood lights before going to bed. During the day I am on constant alert. This is war people, masquerading as petty crime. No, it's not petty crime, it is systematic genocide. We are cornered with our backs against the wall. So, accept the reality, and make changes, have safety plans, adapt, or you'll die.

  • fairness.iseverything - 2013-02-05 10:52

The time has come for the citizens of South Africa to become ruthless towards criminal kinds. Not only the farmers but everyone. Harbouring, hiding or partnering a criminal makes you a criminal. Like everything else if don't do it ourselves no one will. From now on I will be vigorous and ruthless. You do the same!

  • jacqui.daanevanrensburg - 2013-02-05 10:54

Well farmers aren't special, or so Mthethwa told us. Mind you all the other people that get killed every day have no special status either. Or so I think the minister will want to tell us but he doesn't dare.

      timmy.ditsele - 2013-02-05 12:40

Ok here is the real deal since you a just a ordinary citizen we don't give a f(*&^K about you, you are not special to us, we are special because we are the ones who determines who is special,We misuse tax money to ours hearts content and you will do nothing about it, remember you are not special. do you get driven at high speeds wit blue lights on? if not F&^*K you are not special.Get over it coz you will never be special in the eyes of the cANcer.WE ARE F%$^KED AS SOUTH AFRICAN CITIZENS.

Do not harme your killers?? Is the constitution!! Iz thAt right???

  • pamela.jacobs.509 - 2013-02-05 11:01

These farmers are so vulnerable, they have no security or police protection and with the government's weapon policies it makes it almost impossible for them to protect themselves. They are all sitting ducks, thousands being killed each year and our politicians make no effort to protect the people that are the source of our everyday food. Guess it only makes sense to our government to import more and pay more for food rather than keeping our farmers safe, extremely sad, wish I could do something to help. My prayers are with you and your family Mr. Smith.

  • jonathan.birkholtz - 2013-02-05 11:05

Is it gonna take more farmers getting killed before our government wake up?! Everyday there is a farm attack!!! At this rate all our food is going to be imported and prices will sore... Wake up please.

  • flynn.govender - 2013-02-05 11:07

Until our government change the laws when it comes to crime, more people will die for petty things. These days it seems that money is more important that a person's life. Come on Zuma & company - damn, this is not rocket science, the crime in our country is getting out of hand, do something now to avoid more chaos in SA

  • Daleen Willemse - 2013-02-05 11:13

  • robert.roberts.581187 - 2013-02-05 15:20

ok , pretty much had enough !! this cant go on , we have to come up with a viable solution .... the farmers being targeted are to old to effectively defend themselves from such naked aggression . what can we do about it? anyone with a viable plan out there ? list the problem points .1. the farmers (targeted) are generaly 60+ years old. .2.some have weapons , but are usually laying useless and locked up in the safe . ok thats only 2 points , maybe you could add a few more points of concern ? we need young white armed men on the farms ! the unemployment rate for white males is staggering. there are over a thousand white "squater" camps in south africa ,many of which , instead of the government providing free anything ,actually have the water and electricity turned off . i suggest , the farmers offer to give a small portion of their land to a poor white family , in return for their help and protection ? food can be planted , homes can be built . sort of a mutually benificial pairing ? most of those whites are afrikaaners and they thrive on farmland ? what do you think ?

      Marie - 2013-02-05 19:08

I think is weary urgent and The time is right!! For 18year European man is Shaun'd by The regime the are homeless in camps be one excellent idea for the farmers to employe and give some land in return Help each other stand up Against the slaughtering stronger then single handed!!

I also think that those farm attacks are committed by former workers,No stranger will just come in and do such things without having inside info about the place. Those ex workers you may find they were ill treated in those farms by farmers,So what better way to revenge than to do this.So farmers must learn to treat their workers well, but having said that I don't condone farm murders.

Its unacceptable that farm crimes have reached such a high level and not enough is being done about it. People, protect yourselves! Don't wait for the government to intervene. Join together and protect your loved ones. I URGE everyone to look at www.facebook.com/victimsupportnetwork for the latest on farm attacks and suggested solutions! this is a fantastic forum for all south africans - victims of crime or not - to share experiences, chat together and unite over all crime in our country, farm attacks included. The Victim Support Network is not just for victims of crime but for everyone hoping to benefit in some way from past experiences and to post solutions or things that have worked for them in the past.

We are so messed up we cant think any more. Crime prevention needs a holistic approach. One of the bail conditions for Pistorius is that he not be charged with any offence relating to violence against women. Why be specific? This could be a problem in terms of the law if he commits an act of violence involving a male. Aaargh, I give up.

  • Rob Heath - 2013-03-12 12:41
