Johannesburg - A farmworker has been sentenced to two life terms in the Northern Cape High Court after being found guilty of rape and murder, police said on Tuesday.

James Olyn, 24, was also sentenced to an additional eight years for robbery, police spokesperson Sergio Kock said.

On 7 November last year, the woman, whose name was not disclosed, was robbed of her cellphone before being raped and killed.

Her half-naked body was found floating in a river near Hopetown the following day. Her ankles were tied with her black ski pants.

Olyn was arrested on 18 October on a farm near Upington, where he was employed.

Kock said he was found in possession of the victim's cellphone.

Sentence was handed down on Tuesday.
