Johannesburg - An Eldorado Park father and son were arrested when police officers on patrol spotted a vehicle with a blue light and police cap on the dashboard.

"They stopped the vehicle and discovered that it was not a police vehicle," Lieutenant Colonel Lungelo Dlamini said in a statement.

The 23-year-old in the vehicle told the police that it belonged to his father.

"As the police were proceeding to the police station to detain the suspect, his father came and produced his appointment certificate and identified himself as a Warrant Officer. At a later stage it was discovered that he is a former reservist who enlisted in the police in the early 90s."

The father was also arrested and the police went to his house for a search where they seized the following:

- One 2.2 Winchester rifle

- One Mossberg shotgun

- One 357 Magnum revolver

- Ammunition: 34 R5 rounds, 560 revolver rounds, 67 SSG rounds of shotgun, 49 rounds of shotgun compression.

- One field dress trouser, four Saps T-shirts, two Saps Golf shirts, one Saps drymack, two Saps bunny jackets, one ceremonial police trouser, one field dress trouser, one boiler Saps suit jacket, three pairs of Saps socks, four field dress Saps caps, one ceremonial cap, two police ranks (inspector and sergeant), one police belt and two name tags.

- A police torch and rifle holster.

The father only produced a licence for the shotgun.

The car, a VW Polo, has been impounded and the pair will appear in court soon.
