A FAMILY dispute on Saturday night left one man dead and another seriously injured after a family member allegedly fired seven shots during an argument.

A Pietermaritzburg police source, who could not be named, said it was alleged that two men attacked a family member with a knife before the man pulled out a gun and shot the two men. The source said the two men who were shot are father and son. The father was rushed to Northdale Hospital with gunshot wounds to his leg and hands, however, the son was declared dead.

The source said the family member who had fired the shots was arrested yesterday morning and several illegal firearms were recovered from his residence.

It is unclear what the dispute that lead to the shooting was about. SAPS spokesperson Major Thulani Zwaneconfirmed the incident and said the Mountain Rise police station is investigating a case of murder and attempted murder.

“It is alleged that a 33-year-old male and his father were shot by the suspect after an argument. They were taken to hospital for medical attention and a 33-year-old was declared dead at the hospital. A 31-year-old male was arrested and he is due to appear in the Pietermaritzburg Magistrate’s Court tomorrow [today].”
