Cape Town - Four defective buses and an unroadworthy taxi were among the vehicles found to be transporting pupils during a learner transport blitz in De Doorns.

Western Cape provincial traffic inspectors conducted an operation at two sites in the area on Thursday to check that the children were being ferried to and from school in safe conditions by drivers authorised to transport them.

Privately contracted vehicles transporting learners to and from the Bonne Esperance Primary School and Hexvallei Secondary School were checked for roadworthiness, appropriate documents, professional driving permits, driving licences, overloading and driver fitness, the provincial department of transport and public works said in a statement.

Fines amounting to a total of R18 000 were issued to offenders.

Provincial traffic chief Kenny Africa said traffic inspectors will be conducting similar operations every month.

Hexvallei Secondary principal Almont May was delighted that traffic law interventions are being implemented to ensure that scholar transport is safe and reliable.

“I hope that operators will take the necessary steps to sort out their documentation,” he said.
