Johannesburg - A total of 17 faulty trucks have been taken off the road in Pietermaritzburg, the KwaZulu-Natal transport department said on Sunday.

KZN transport MEC Willies Mchunu said the trucks proved to be unroadworthy and were suspended for their various faults on Friday.

"As part of intensifying law enforcement in the lead up to the festive season, Road Traffic Inspectorate officers carried out an operation which resulted in the testing of 24 trucks, suspension of 17 trucks and the issuing of 28 warrants totalling R21 000," Mchunu said in a statement.

This comes after he launched "Operation Phezukwabo", loosely translating to "We are onto them" last month.

The campaign was focused on the safety of heavy vehicles especially trucks which have featured in recent accidents including a Pinetown accident that claimed 24 lives.

Mchunu said: "The fact that a one-day, random operation can lead to suspension of 17 trucks demonstrates the seriousness of the challenge we are dealing with."

He said more traffic officers would be visible on the roads to put an end to road traffic infringements and therefore lessen road fatalities.
