Female farmer stabbed 10 times

2012-02-16 10:27

Johannesburg - Armed robbers stabbed a female farmer in the hands at least ten times in an attempt to take her knife from her, before tying her and her daughter up for about an hour.

Reinetha Venter, 59, and her daughter René, 27, who live alone on a farm about 30km from Modjadjiskloof, were attacked on Sunday night.

Police arrived about two hours after the robbers left and Venter then had to convince officials that it was a farm attack and not just a burglary.

“Police kept saying it was a burglary,” she said on Wednesday.

Farm attack

"I kept saying it was a farm attack. Then they asked me why I was stabbed in my hands and if I tried to use my knife against the robbers.

“Of course I did. If I had a firearm I would have shot them. It was as if they [the police] tried to blame me for the attack.”

Venter is the sister of Colonel Gawie Alberts, station commander at the Villiera police station in Pretoria.

She and her daughter have lived alone on the farm since her husband died two years ago. She locked away all his firearms after his death, and placed her own firearm in a place of safety because she was overseas for much of last year.

Venter was watching TV at about 20:45 on Sunday when she heard a loud noise. Her daughter was sleeping in her bedroom.

“There was another bang and then they were in the house.”

Venter’s daughter came out of the room when she heard the noise. She and her mother were forced onto the sofa.

“I pulled out a little knife that I am always carrying. One of them saw it and stabbed my hands repeatedly to get the knife,” said Venter.

The attackers then tied up their feet and hands.

Venter’s daughter kept asking her mother if she was okay, which upset the attackers. The daughter was then taken to the bathroom and her mother was carried to her room.

“The leader of the group was aggressive. But when he was away, the others asked me if I was okay,” said Venter.

After an hour, the attackers left with cellphones, electronic goods, jewellery and Venter’s car.

The daughter managed to untie herself, freed her mother and called the neighbours.

No answer at police station

Neighbours called the Modjadjiskloof police station but no one answered the telephone.

Finally they managed to get hold of the Soekmekaar police, who informed their Modjadjiskloof colleagues.

Officials arrived about two hours later. Police took four statements from Venter during which she had to “repeat everything ten times”.

Police spokesperson Lieutenant Colonel Ronel Otto said the car was found burnt out near the house on Monday.

Otto said police will investigate Venter’s complaints about the officials.

    "Serve and Protect" Riiight....

      Mattewis - 2012-02-16 12:22

Yeah, but you must qualify the verbs. It actually reads: serve myself and protect my interests!

  • Guy - 2012-02-16 10:38

Well, it does not benefit the SAPSes falsified statistics to call it a farm attack, secondly, they don't really care much for such crimes as it is part of a unspoken government agenda namely Genocide.

      Cindy - 2012-02-16 11:40

Definitely agree with part one of your statement, the genocide bit I think I'll take under advisement

      Barefoot - 2012-02-16 11:42

Genocide? i thought someone has to be killed the '-cide' in genocide

      lindz.kok - 2012-02-16 12:10

bare food go look op the definition of genocide! it is the PROCESS of eradicating a culture, belief or race. have you any idea what is happening across the world concerning the genocide in south africa, this year we have seen the fruits of tlu, afriforum and vryheids front where many of these leaders has gone to take part in talks in den hague by the world courts and the world is being made aware of the racism inforced by the anc... rememder just before apartheid fell? it much like this.

      Vaaldonkie - 2012-02-16 12:22

Genocide refers to wiping out a group of people, whether through bloodshed, discriminatory policies or the eradication of their culture and heritage. It's not MY definition*, that's how Amnesty International, Genocide Watch, The United nations, etc. define it. *although I agree with it.

      Mattewis - 2012-02-16 12:26

@Barefoot Go google genocidewatch before you loosely throw the term around as if you understand it. Buy yourself some shoes!

  • wnkambule - 2012-02-16 10:40

  • Piet - 2012-02-16 10:44

Well after all the ANC is not condemning the ethnic cleansing....

      richard.hipkin - 2012-02-16 10:53

There is no ethnic cleansing and the ANC have condemned farm attacks... Farmers are isolated and therefore easy prey.

      Brett - 2012-02-16 11:15

@PointBlank the ANC have gone to court to defend their "right" to sing kill the boer.

      Gerhard - 2012-02-16 11:33

The ANC has also condemned fraud and corruption, does not mean they are going to do anything about it.

      Alfred - 2012-02-16 12:55

PointBlank, the ANC can condemn farm attacks all they like. The bottom line is that they had the commando's disbanded, they sing songs encouraging that exact type of violence and they flat out refuse to even acknowledge that there is a problem. They may aswell just make farm attacks ANC policy.

      Willie - 2012-02-16 14:56

Piet get over your high horse it is very easy for you just to post this silly comment.Who sanctioned the so-called "ethnic cleansing" in the ANC where is your evidence

  • an0nthinker - 2012-02-16 10:50

Sad us that these two women are very lucky they didn't get raped. Unfrotunately when you hear about woken being attacked in the home, 95% of the time they are raped as well. And bad on you news24 for divulging where they live and that they are alone!

  • Jan-Paul - 2012-02-16 10:52

When these guys are caught (If they ever get caught) There should be no trials and court cases.. Just hang them streight away. If found guilty there should be no prison sentence. Just death penalty. They should make attacking farmers one of the worst crimes. That is punishable by death. This is the only way the war on killing farmers will stop

      David - 2012-02-16 11:06

The death penaly only exists , alive and well, in township justice. We can learn from these people.

  • Johan - 2012-02-16 10:54

    SAPS is pathetic !

      Patsy - 2012-02-16 15:39

Because most of the good ones left, knowing full well what would happen if they didn't. Fortunately we have a few really good ones left, unfortunately they are vastly outnumbered.

  • Ofentse - 2012-02-16 10:56

I hope guys like Mulder get to read this and see that their tendencies are only making things a time when people are seeking peace leaders like Mulder speak separation and more hatred...

      eric.vanvuuren - 2012-02-16 11:05

@Ofentse -I think you spell the problem like soo... Malema... got it? No, well...M-a-l-e-m-a.

      Sharmay - 2012-02-16 11:06

what tendencies...? He's the first person to grow a pair and state facts. Brush up on your history.

      Nick - 2012-02-16 11:18

mamparra you juliasss and anc not seeking peace if they were there wouldn't be all these farm attacks the people that produce the food we all eat suppose you didn't know that we import food on large scale because we can't produce enough wonder why

      Graham - 2012-02-16 11:28

White farmers are being killed by the thousands, will you only understand that when there is famine? Someone else is preaching hatred! Does "kill the boer" ring a bell or you just a racist too?

      Ofentse - 2012-02-16 11:39

I said leaders like Mulde, does that mean I support "Kill the boers" but the first thing that came in this white racist minds when i said Mulder was race and you call me a racist...I dont condone what happened to the family but I wish it can happen to all the racist people in this country...

      eric.vanvuuren - 2012-02-16 11:51

@ Ofentse - "Nick and you want peace, you news24 whitties" is it still racism when it reads - "Julius and you want peace, you news24 Blackies" is it still Racism that gets you? Or is it now a special form of racism. I think I am just as racist as you are boet. When I experience stupid racism I respond in kind. I do not fear any man especially if his Black.

      derekneilmaclachlan - 2012-02-16 11:55

What is an "African person". I was born here and I consider myself African. Just because I am white you try to exclude me!!!

      Ofentse - 2012-02-16 12:05

eric do you think i fear white people, think again bra...

      Nick - 2012-02-16 12:10

ofentse all noise and nothing else......

      Alfred - 2012-02-16 12:12

Yeh Ofentse, sure looks like these "people are seeking peace" doesn't it? But if this is Mulder's fault because of what he said yesterday who would you like to blame for the thousands of farm attacks that happened before yesterday? Zille? Afriforum? Hofmeyer? Anyone except the people who are actually committing the crimes.

      Tommy - 2012-02-16 12:12

In other words Ofentse, you are not allowed to speak the truth in this country, because it will get you in trouble?

      Morwa - 2012-02-16 12:30

@Ofentse and others, it is very interesting to see how excited and energetic we feel with (hatred and disgust)towards one another championing the race card and yet we are sitting here hoping for a better South Africa...? what is wrong with all of you... what is the subject matter again...? "Female farmer stabbed 10 times " there is nowhere where it is written (WHITE GREEN OR BLACK) in this article! To you News24 you truly lost your integrity... why expose the family when they have already been such an horrendous ordeal...?? To our Beloved SAPS... i still recommend that the system gets better education to have the ability to differentiate between "burglary" and "Farm attack" underline the word "attack" not breaking into a property and stealing possessions without being noticed.

      eric.vanvuuren - 2012-02-16 12:34

Funny how a subject can spark such reactions from people how otherwise would rather be just normal. I'm glad you don’t fear me. Just this, though. There is a point when ordinary people regardless of background will decide that enough is just that... Don’t think for a moment that on the day the proverbial cr@p hits the fan that things will go as smoothly as you have been told. There is surety that the people alive in SA today are from the toughest ever. So even if you start a war and even if you win. You as a black race will be doomed to an endless circle of warlord after warlord. Decade after bloody decade. And you would think “if only we explored other alternatives to stupid tendencies toward fanning the flames of hate".

      dirk.smit1 - 2012-02-16 14:02

@Morwa - Well said. Like you I also believe that the race card is pulled quickly. But it is understood when we are still playing the blame game. Black blame whites, whites blame black. But there is no common ground to fix the wrong. I agree, with you SAPS remark. Education is important, but also a will to serve. Education means nothing when the SAPS is sleeping under a tree. People just don't care about one another. So the real effort is in changing our minds to start caring about each other again, and the with the mudslinging in these comments, I am sad to say, South Africa still has a LONG way to go.

      Kevin - 2012-02-20 16:21

What sre you on about Ofentse ?? The only people not seeking peace are the ANC and their youth league. Have a look at the farm murders which occur almost everyday and tell us what is going on. This is a ANC cadre plan to chase people of land through means of murder and therefore fear. that way no compensation to people who bought and have farmed land for generations. Mulder is just telling the truth bud.

  • Sharmay - 2012-02-16 11:03

The police were probably dividing the loot first which is why no-one could get hold of them..

  • Mzwandile - 2012-02-16 11:15

People let us be compassionate. Crime has been committed and it doesn;t matter whether its black or white. I appeal toeveryone to extend a hand of simpathy to those offend. I hope the criminal will be apprehended soon.

  • Shirley - 2012-02-16 11:18

It is blatantly clear that police, government and any powers that be have NO interest in getting these farm attcks under control! It seems like we will have to step up and protect ourselves! We cannot continue to allow our farmers to be raped and murdered this way! All farmers must arm themselves and shoot to kill!!

      david.lebethe - 2012-02-16 11:53

Are you moving for amendment to a long standing resolution for we know that white people shoot at a slightest sight of a black person both on the farms and rural areas.

      Sharmay - 2012-02-16 11:59

David, due to the high rate of crime in SA along with the brutality displayed in farm murders, are you surprised? If I see someone on my property that shouldn't be there, I'll shoot first, ask questions later. I don't have a deathwish.

      Shirley - 2012-02-16 13:34

David: I dont care what colour you are-if you are on my property, armed and threatening my life and well being-I WILL shoot to kill! Take it which ever way you like! Isnt it stange that "black" perps attck the farmers????? Havent heard of white attacks. Go play race card in Zim!

      Jennifer - 2012-02-16 14:00

@David: When Shirley said people need to improve their safety and protect themselves, she didn't mention colour... are you implying that farm attacks are always carried out by black people? Now that sounds like you are a racist! If it was your sister and mother, you would want the same as Shirley.

  • Agedah Alex - 2012-02-16 11:20

The wisest thing for white farmers to do is to employ the AWB as security in farms nationwide

      iGeorge_S - 2012-02-16 11:25

Id actually say they must employ Mapogo, those guys dont take any crap.

      Marion - 2012-02-16 11:34

@iGeorge_S... I think many of them do use Mapogo... if you're a criminal you don't want to be caught by Mapogo from what I've heard...

      iGeorge_S - 2012-02-16 11:45

@Marion ive heard the same thing, those Mapogo guys will MAKE someone talk to get their man, i wish the police could be like them.

  • Agedah Alex - 2012-02-16 11:23

Farmers should ignore guns laws and arm their selves,if possible form vigilantee patrols

      Vaaldonkie - 2012-02-16 12:25

Or, you know, reinstate the Commando's. That way it's all nice and legal.

      Heiku - 2012-02-16 12:37

The ANC will come down on it like they did the commandos

  • Pietertjie - 2012-02-16 11:37

I realy do not understand police and the government of this country. Police men of this country are the stupid donkeys ever, donkeys are even better, they can pull a cart. I raelly hate the police department of SA, killing the inocent and curuption is what they good at. If ever you have a problem handle it yourself. I was robbed on December last year and stabed by people I do not know and they said it was my fault to be in a place I don't know, is it wrong to tour around our country?

      Brett - 2012-02-16 12:16

The government encourages these crimes by singing kill the boer and bring me my machine gun.

      richard.winterton - 2012-02-16 12:52

It will only end when the ANC taken out of government. So the ones who vote ANC are the ones who sadly condone this sort of behaviour!

I may not agree with the anc but what's this hideous crime have to do with politics? ppl does everything have to be about ANC,women were hurt here and we at least need to talk about the incompetancy of SAPS in general not Zuma this ANC that.c'mon.

  • Honest Raymond Makoi - 2012-02-16 12:18

And they say the education is gettin better... I bet u the police were illiterate!

  • Vaaldonkie - 2012-02-16 12:19

There is an important lesson in this: if you do not know how to use a knife as a weapon, do not carry one. The same goes for owning a firearm. If you don't know how and/or don't intend to use it, then don't get one. If you pull out a weapon to defend yourself, you need to be 100% committed to taking your attacker's life, otherwise you risk losing your own.

  • Mabinzo - 2012-02-16 12:20

Honestly speaking, the SAPS isn't doing a good a very good job when solving crimes like this one.even if the victims where black the response time would have been the same..tell them about public drinking, public indecency will see how fast they react.

Just shake my head in disbelief at the stupidity of disclosure of the womens whereabouts, firearms etc. I am pleased the ladies who were assaulted by these thugs are okay, although they must be extremely traumatized. Not a day goes by in SA without reports of these types of crimes. Come on ANC...get your hands out of the cash coffers and and do the jobs you were elected to do. Stop the crime, bring back the death sentence and stop being brainless and corrupt. This was oncethe land ofmilk and its mieleipap and manure!

      Alfred - 2012-02-16 13:08

I think "relocated" is exactly what the attackers and the ANC want for the farmers, preferably to the afterlife.

      Angelique Harris - 2012-02-16 15:31

Just to respond to Herman I think the gentlemans' name is. My husband and I were visiting friends in September of last year, while sitting out at the braai at seven 'o clock at night the four of us were attacked! They pointed a gun at my husband and hit him across the back with a crowbar, we were all shoved indooors, tied up and they threatened to shoot my friends' 6 week old baby if we did not co-operate! To cut a long and traumatising story short: one of them stood on my friends' hair while she was laying face down on the ground! another one found my husbands' car keys in his pocket, asked him which car was his, went and ransacked the car and when he came back in said here you go SIR and put his keys back into his hogtied hands! So yeah, just because they are polite doesn't mean it can't happen, quite frankly it makes it even scarier!

pains a lot to see a country divided...if only white people could open up to black people and black people learn to forgive and forget maybe we can find a solution this type of crimes because they being commited by normal people from community. I live in Soshanguve township where armed robberies and rapes were a norm, but unity between the community members has transformed my township into a tourist gem where you can even take a walk in the middle of the night without worrying about your house. Unity did everything for us.

  • Justin - 2012-02-16 16:23

it was actually a burglary, the objective was profit, not attacking. Farm attacks are out of hate or anger, this was done to steal. A person is guilty of burglary if he enters any building or part of a building as a trespasser with intent to steal, inflict grievous bodily harm

I am sorry to say - there is still gonna be a lot of blood shed but us whities will not give up - and we will win at the end of the day due to the fact that we have a bit of grey matter ....I am starting to hate SA with a passion.

  • Herbert - 2012-02-17 05:48

As I said before, these farm attacks are orchestrated to scare/kill whites off their land. This one failed in that the women were not killed. I think "Big Mother" who is behind this cleansing will have to talk to her boys for not doing what they're paid for.
