Festive arrests not enough - DA

2013-01-23 17:57

Johannesburg - The arrests of 45 000 people in Gauteng since September are not enough in the fight against festive season crimes, the DA said on Wednesday.

"The number of people arrested reflects the efforts and ability of police to hunt down criminals, but the absence of statistics on the number of crimes reported is concerning," said Democratic Alliance MPL John Moodey.

"Without reliable and up-to-date figures for crimes committed and reported in Gauteng for the duration of the campaign, we cannot effectively assess the ability of police to detect and prevent crime before it happens."

Police launched their crime-fighting campaign "Operation Duty Calls" on 15 September. It runs until 31 January. Seven base camps have been set up across the province for the duration of the operation. On Tuesday, provincial police commissioner Lieutenant General Mzwandile Petros said the arrests were for crimes including robbery, rape, kidnapping, murder, fraud and shoplifting.

Alcohol, guns, cars

Police had confiscated more than 411 500 litres of alcohol, 3346 illegal guns and over 47 000 rounds of ammunition. They also recovered 2 437 stolen vehicles.

They said they would destroy more than 52 500 litres of alcohol and more than 294 000 counterfeit CDs and DVDs.

Moodey applauded the effort, but challenged Petros to make public statistics for the number and nature of crimes reported at Gauteng police stations during the festive seasons of 2011/12 and 2012/13.

"Only comprehensive information such as this would serve to reassure the people of Gauteng that our provincial police are indeed turning the tide and winning the war against crime."

He said arrest rates alone did not indicate the effectiveness of anti-crime strategies and visible policing.

DA,please get a life and be a political party with purpose, otherwise u always gonna be an opposition party, oops,I forgot u the opposition!

      fortune.baker.9 - 2013-01-23 18:39

True, they are forever opposing what the government has done... Like a bunch of 2 year olds who don't get their way.

      mlungisi - 2013-01-23 19:01

Opposing the arrest of criminals. DA is so useless, they can't even build a complete toilet mxm.

      jesibelle.krueger - 2013-01-23 19:01

Sure melusi.myaluza, South Africa is sooooo much better off with the ANC as the ruling party - I mean the rand has just nose-dived through R9/US$, investors are scattering like the bewildered, etc, etc..! What the DA is saying is absolutely legitimate: the 'fantastical' 45k arrests figure is perhaps just a bit too fantastic - so kindly tell us a bit more Mr Commissioner, eg what were these arrests, for instance - else making 413 arrests every single day, 7 days a week, non-stop, sounds a bit too amazing to be real...

      gareth.flook - 2013-01-23 19:31

O so u can build a toilet? I highly doubt it

If this country is going to go down it will be because of Zulus, l wonder if they know this. DA is opposition Party, please go back and read the article again, if things are not being done properly in the country it is their right to talk. You should be happy you have DA, otherwise this country could have finished by now.

      melusi.myaluza - 2013-01-24 08:05

U should be u a DA ass kisser!!!

      mantsho.tlali - 2013-01-26 02:33

And you must be ANC Sh#iter and Idiot!!!!

  • siphiwevusi.mabika - 2013-01-23 20:00

    I told U, DA loose direction,and DA won't survive

  • MrGrumpy - 2013-01-23 20:22

I am a firm supporter of the ABANC (anything but ANC) camp and particularly the DA, but come guys, sometimes positive reinforcement can have a better effect than negative criticism. Even if the DA comment is strictly correct, maybe those cops that actually did their jobs should be praised. It is tiring to only hear negative from the DA.

  • brent.bartlett.98 - 2013-01-23 20:36

The DA needs to give credit when it is due. Yes, more needs to be done, but hey, give credit where it is due.

Didn't recover my stolen car... Good effort though. Was really impressed by the Bramley SAPS who really tried to help me. Kudos
