Fewer serious crimes - Mthethwa

2012-09-20 10:58

Cape Town - South Africa's murder rate has dropped by 3.1% in the past financial year, Police Minister Nathi Mthethwa announced on Thursday.

Releasing the 2011/12 annual crime statistics at Parliament, Mthethwa said in 2004/5 more than 18 000 people were murdered - now down to less than 16 000.

There had been a 27.6% reduction over an eight year period -2004/5 to 2011/12, he said.
Sexual offences had dropped by 3.7%.

"We need to emphasise that, as government, we are, however, still concerned about the scourge of rape in our country.

"Rape decreased [by] 1.9%, but is [still] unacceptably high," Mthethwa said.

On organised crime, Mthethwa said this category was showing a downward trend.

"The most highly organised forms of aggravated robberies - namely carjacking, cash-in-transit heists, and bank robbery - have experienced decreases," he said.

Breaking down the figures, Mthethwa said carjacking decreased by 23.6% in 2010/11. A further decrease of 11.9% followed in 2011/12.

Cash-in-transit robberies were down by 37.5%, and bank robberies by 10.3% in 2011/12.

House robberies decreased by 1.9%, but business robberies continued to show an upward trend, jumping 7.5%.

Mthethwa noted an increase in small business robberies.

"We have now finalised a strategy to combat and reduce robberies at small business... we will be engaging relevant parties to ensure implementation of the strategy within next few weeks," he said.

    Murder capital of SA??????

      omo.naija.750 - 2012-09-20 11:10

What about farm murders minister? Surely you can not tell us that is going down? Please do something about it.

      riette.nothling - 2012-09-20 11:13

farm murders are not counted as part of the national crime stats, but it's also not considered a "specialised" crime, so it just gets wiped under the carpet. I must be honest, I do not agree with these figures, not if you read the papers!

      ann.murray.9279 - 2012-09-20 11:18

Tell that to the people of Muldersdrift and a few other places which have been crippled by crimes of extreme violence. 6 months for this type of report to be shared with tax paying public is just ludicrous and totally useless. We need to be more hands-on!

      rbphiri - 2012-09-20 11:21

What??? is that so??? wow and I guess the tooth fairy is real, perhaps malema's brain is also real...oh ja it is! REAL stupid!. The numbers have been deflated to make the butthole SAPS seem like adequate law enforcers. President Zuma decided to exercise his mandate in terms of section 84(2)(j) of the Constitution, to grant special remission of sentence to certain categories of offenders in the spirit of Freedom Day. Afterwards 43 of the offenders freed so far were back in jail for rape, murder and other heinous offences. Let's not forget last year's surge in farm murders minister. If your butthole officials did their job and the government implemented lengthier prison sentences maybe than the figures would be more credible.

      keith.staniford - 2012-09-20 11:27

Where pray Mr. Minister is there any correlation between the financial year and the number of rape, murderand serious crimes? What a load of B***sh*t.

      Desilusionada - 2012-09-20 11:51

43 Murdered the day before 43 Murdered yesterday 43 Murdered today 43 Murdered tomorrow 43 Murdered the day after........ Remind me again, how many people died at Marikana? And the National Issue (including political points scoring), that was made of it? If the Government cannot publicly condemn the killing of its citizens in foreign places, it is understandable the lack of political will to sort their domestic crisis...........

      omo.naija.750 - 2012-09-20 12:24

@timmy.khethani - Why am i not surprised at your brainless comments. So because i am a Nigerian ,i must condone crime and senseless killings of farmers. If one was to use your logic , people will instantly believe that all South Africans condone rape. You are too intellectually challenged to process "common sense" and too demonic to exhibit human compassion. I live in SA so what happens in SA affect whether i am a citizen or not.The killing of farmers affects everyone in SA negatively regardless of their nationality ,religion or race as it means less food for the nation. If you are so bothered about boko haram ,you can migrate to Nigeria to tackle them yourself.

      omo.naija.750 - 2012-09-20 12:33

timmy.khethani - unlike you ,SA farmers are hard working people and have no time for party or abusing substances. It is you (timmy) and your peanut brained cadres who embezzle public funds and use it to go party ,get drunk and rape girls on the weekend. We have seen how "fantastic" you and your coomrades can *cough* ruin *couch*,excuse me run a once upon a time first class country. With the likes of you at the helm of the nation,Zimbabwe style living is just a heartbeat way .Yes Alooter Continua coomrade!

Absolute rubbish. I'm sick and tired of this lying thieving government.

      claudia.meads - 2012-09-20 12:53

Have the honourable (ye right...) Minister's statistics been independently (i.e. the bona fide kind, sir) verified..? The answer is: NOOOOOOOOO..!!! If you believe these figures you probably also believe that the ANC can govern a country, that Xmas Father- and the Tooth Fairy exists, that you can drink muti that will make bullets bounce off you, that there is a magic rabbit at Wonderkop, that Julius Malema is just a misunderstood intellectual who will one day solve the Riemann Hypothesis and that Jacob Zuma is 100% correct when he says: "Service delivery in South Africa is...", wait for it.., are you ready.., brace yourselves, here it comes - note, this is going to be largest fetid lump to hit the fan yet --- "EXCEPTIONAL"... I REST MY CASE. ...

      thandiwe.ngema.71 - 2012-09-20 13:17

Our crime stats will have to be verified by the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime. Last year the audit was fine - let's hope this year's is too. What happens is the UN Office check mortuary records, to verify the murders. Read for analysis of crime. Lizette Lancaster will write a report following confirmation from the UN that the stats are accurate. There is probably under-reporting of rape stats from rural areas and cases where car-jackings have been listed as normal robberies. Crime is still unacceptably high. It makes sense that it has fallen a bit as the percentage of people out of work or without welfare has fallen (mainly the latter category as unemployment is static). The ANC need to do a lot more to improve crime. There are areas where it is safe to walk around at night but that is still the EXCEPTION to the rule. Most places are no-go areas at night!

      thandiwe.ngema.71 - 2012-09-20 13:31

I very much doubt the ANC can DELIVER stats that pull the wool in front of the eyes of the United Nations Office on Drugs on Crime.. ie I don't think they are capable enough to hide stats from them..

      lorain.maseko - 2012-09-20 14:02

Ummm,Timmy your comments towards Omonaija are quite uncalled for. So beacuse of his nationalty it's safe to assume that he sells illegals substances? You are no different then to white people who feel that all black people are criminals.

      mark.singh.9889 - 2012-09-20 14:50

They will simply move the percentage of crime stats not included in this report on to the year end matric pass rate. that way everything balances out. Accounts 201

  • andrew.mackie.90 - 2012-09-20 11:16

One must wonder? Have all the crimes been reported and if so have all these been submitted. Bear in mind in the past it has come to light that many police officers do not report crime in order not to show their area in a bad light. Also if it is to be believed many police cannot write a report accurately. Therefore we must take these stats with some uncertainty.

  • pieter.mulder1 - 2012-09-20 11:18

Please do not believe this nonsense for a second, the statistics are manipulated to stop the people complaining and to make it look like the government are winning the war on crime. The stats are also manipulated at the bottom right up to the top, most rapes are not even reported as nothing ever gets done about it!! Load of rubbish!!!

  • boeretroos.redakteur - 2012-09-20 11:36

  • malungisa.samuel - 2012-09-20 11:36

  • William Teixeira - 2012-09-20 11:36

Why do they not quote farm murders? Are they included into a group to avoid this serious issue?

      marius.j.rensburg.3 - 2012-09-20 13:19

Because (i have come to realise) the term FARMER in South Africa seem to be directly linked to APARTHEID and THE BIG BAD WHITES and so on. - Well, so it seems from some people commenting here. I propose the term FOOD PRODUCERS be used from now on - so people can understand slaughtering FOOD PRODUCERS compromises the food security for all of SA's people!

  • james.shogole - 2012-09-20 12:10

Im bothering by the comment of whites ppl. They always act like victims and crime affect us all in South africa. Here in Vryburg at Piet Plesis a white farmer killed a farm worker and injured the other one then bribed the injured one with R1500 to lie to the police. The farmer got a bail of R2000 on monday , so white ppl stop acting angels and try to behave like normal humanbeing we getting tied of u.

      schalk.mattheys - 2012-09-20 12:50

hey james, wena, we all part of the rainbow nation now boet, where you been for the last 18 years? What's with this "us people" and "them white people nonsense?" People are sick and tired of crime, period. We meant to be pi$$3ed off at the credibility of the crime stats here, not racializing the victims of crime in SA!? WTF? Crime is out of control in SA, period. The ANC cannot or does not have the balls to do anything about it! So they must stop trying to BS us with BS stats!!! We had enough of the ANC lies already FFS!!!

  • ina.cripps.5 - 2012-09-20 12:13

I do not agree with these statistics. They are rigged. There is an election looming, so nothing that come from this government's mouths can be believed. I read the news everyday, and to my mind it has worsened. Especially attacks against the farmers and the elderly, with more elderly woman being raped.

So Mr Police Minister, what are the concrete actionable plans to proactively prevent crime, rather than catch criminals after the fact. The latter is too late as by that time the lives of the victims have been obliterated. Our right to safety & security in entrenched in the constitution, What is the ANC led government doing to ensure that those words are not just mere hot air?
